Amazon announced Wednesday the launch of Amazon Grocery, a new private-label brand that merges popular items from Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly into one “grocery essentials” collection.

The retail giant’s new brand features more than 1,000 grocery items, ranging from milk and olive oil to produce, meat and seafood, with most products priced under $5.

The launch comes “during a time when consumers are particularly price-conscious,” according to Jason Buechel, vice president of Amazon Worldwide Grocery Stores and CEO of Whole Foods Market.

“With Amazon Grocery, we’re simplifying how customers discover and shop our extensive private label food selection while maintaining the quality and value our customers expect and deserve,” Buechel said in a statement.

The selection spans grocery categories, from cage-free eggs and pre-sliced bagels to shredded Parmesan, baby carrots and ground beef, with most products having earned ratings of 4 stars or higher by shoppers, according to an announcement from the company.

To kick off the launch, Amazon is also introducing new options such as fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, refrigerated pizza dough and bottled spring water, with additional options like frozen pasta meals, pie fillings, granola and more frozen vegetables expected in the months ahead, the announcement noted.

The new brand’s packaging, which reduces plastic usage, sports a “modern” and “clean” design with bold lettering, according to the company.

In 2024, sales from Amazon’s private-label brands climbed 15% from the previous year, spanning categories from groceries and household goods to clothing.

Amazon Grocery products are now available nationwide through Amazon.com and Amazon Fresh, online and in stores.

Availability may vary by location.

The news follows a week after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that Amazon had agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle a lawsuit alleging it misled customers into paying for Prime subscriptions.

Jeep is rolling out a freshly designed model after six consecutive years of annual sales declines.

The Stellantis automaker unveiled a new Jeep Cherokee on Thursday, the latest move to try to jump-start sales. It’s the first Jeep hybrid system, and the first for Stellantis in North America.

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee redesign aims to evoke the iconic Cherokee SUV brand, which has dotted the company’s history for decades. Jeep had previously discontinued the model in 2023 under Stellantis’ former CEO Carlos Tavares as part of various cost-cutting measures.

Thursday’s model marks the debut of Stellantis’ new 1.6-liter turbo-four hybrid powertrain, with more than 500 miles to a tank of fuel. The car will boast a “technology-filled interior,” according to the company, including Stellantis’ new Connect One services package.

The new model, which the company said is longer, taller and wider than the previous Cherokee, also maximizes its space with 30% more cargo capacity.

“The 2026 Jeep Cherokee is an incredibly capable and competitive midsize SUV that’s ready to reclaim our
territory in North America’s largest vehicle segment,” Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf said in a statement.

The entry-level 2026 car starts at $36,995, including a $1,995 destination charge. The cars will arrive at dealerships toward the end of this year and the beginning of next year, with production taking place at Stellantis’ Mexico plant.

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee Overland.

Stellantis

The announcement comes as Jeep tries to reinvigorate its sales in what has been a yearslong slump for the brand.

Amid a six-year sales decline for Jeep, Stellantis is also facing headwinds from President Donald Trump’s tariffs, estimating its full-year impact for the company will reach 1.5 billion euros, or $1.74 billion. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, who took over the top job at the automaker earlier this summer, said on a July call with analysts that the company has been working with the Trump administration.

Filosa, who was previously the CEO for Jeep, has long aimed to recover Jeep’s market share through a revitalization of the Cherokee brand.

Stellantis touted a gradual improvement over the coming months in its first-half earnings in July.

“My first weeks as CEO have reconfirmed my strong conviction that we will fix what’s wrong in Stellantis by capitalizing on everything that’s right in Stellantis — starting from the strength, energy and ideas of our people, combined with the great new products we are now bringing to market,” Filosa said in a July statement.

In September, OpenAI introduced A.I. technology that could “reason” through tasks involving math, coding and science.

Now, this technology can tackle similar tasks that involve images, including sketches, posters, diagrams and graphs.

On Wednesday, the company unveiled two new versions of its reasoning technology called OpenAI o3 and OpenAI o4-mini. Each can handle tasks that involve both images and text.

These systems can “manipulate, crop and transform images in service of the task you want to do,” said Marc Chen, head of research at OpenAI, in announcing the new system during an internet livestream.

OpenAI also said these systems could generate images, search the web and use other digital tools.

Unlike early versions of its ChatGPT chatbot, these reasoning systems spend a significant amount of time “thinking” about a question before answering, rather than providing an instant response.

The systems are part of a wider effort to build A.I. that can reason through complex tasks. Companies like Google, Meta and DeepSeek, a Chinese start-up, are developing similar technologies.

The goal is to build systems that can solve a problem through a series of steps, each one building on the last, similar to how humans reason. These technologies can be particularly useful to computer programmers who use A.I. systems to write code.

The reasoning systems are based on a technology called large language models, or L.L.M.s. To build reasoning systems, companies put L.L.M.s through an additional process called reinforcement learning. During this process, a system learns behavior through extensive trial and error.

By working through various math problems, for instance, it can learn which methods lead to the right answer and which do not. If it repeats this process with a large number of problems, it can identify patterns.

OpenAI’s latest systems have learned to handle problems that involve both images and text.

Experts point out that reasoning systems do not necessarily reason like a human. And like other A.I. technologies, they can get things wrong and make stuff up — a phenomenon called hallucination.

OpenAI also unveiled a new tool, Codex CLI, that is designed to further facilitate computer programming tasks that involve systems like o3 and o4-mini. Called an A.I. agent, it provides ways of using these A.I. systems in tandem with existing code stored on a programmer’s personal machine.

The company said it was open sourcing this tool, meaning it is freely sharing its underlying technology with programmers and businesses, allowing them to modify and build on the technology.

OpenAI said that, beginning Wednesday, these new systems would be available to anyone who subscribed to ChatGPT Plus, a $20-a-month service, or ChatGPT Pro, a $200-a-month service that provides access to all of the company’s latest tools.

(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, for copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems. Both companies have denied the claims).

KB Home’s new wildfire-resilient neighborhood in Escondido, California.

CNBC

Just months after raging wildfires destroyed thousands of homes in the Los Angeles area, California-based KB Home is unveiling what it calls its first “wildfire-resilient” community.

The development, in Escondido, just outside San Diego, will have 64 single-family homes when completed that all meet the wildfire resilience standards developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), a nonprofit, scientific research and communications organization supported by property insurers. These standards are designed to protect the homes against the three major sources of ignition during a wildfire: Flying embers, flames and radiant heat.

A handful of homes in the development are now complete, with roughly 20 homes already sold. Three homeowners have moved in, according to KB Home.

The homes are built with covered gutters, enclosed eaves, noncombustible siding — like stucco and fiber cement — tempered-glass windows, and non-combustible patios, doors and roofing. They have six-inch vertical clearance using the concrete foundation, stucco and stone. They also incorporate defensible space with low-combustible vegetation at least 5 feet from the homes. Metal fencing is used throughout the neighborhood.

Steve Ruffner, regional general manager of KB Home’s coastal division, said he and his colleagues saw a fire-resistant home demonstration by IBHS at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference last summer and were impressed by the opportunity this type of community presented. Since KB Home had already broken ground on the development, they had to change gears quickly to incorporate the fire-resilient components.

“We had to change the architecture on the fly to a more stucco-oriented architecture with fire-resistant shutters, or fire-free shutters and doors and tempered windows. We were able to do that really quickly with the city, because they wanted to work with us. They really understood that this was important for their city,” Ruffner said.

He called it more of a research and development project to see what the costs might be and how to work with trade partners to lower that cost, although he wouldn’t say how much those costs increased.

KB Home’s new Wildfire-Resilient Neighborhood in Escondido, CA.

CNBC

The homes range from $1 million to the low millions, which tends to be a move-up price in that area for single-family, detached homes.

“We’re trying to get the cost to a reasonable place, because we really specialize in first-time buyers and first-time move-up buyers. So we want to make sure we can get this in a good place where it’s affordable to do it and it’s also got a good payback to the customer in a form of safety,” he added.

As climate change causes more severe drought in more areas of the country, focus is shifting to fire-resistant homes and communities.

During the the Palisades Fire in January, some homes that had been specifically built to fire-resistant standards remained unscathed while everything around them was destroyed. These types of homes, however, are largely one-offs by custom builders.

There has been progress in California on a home-by-home basis, according to IBHS, but KB Home is the first big production builder in the country that has designed and is fully building out 64 homes all to meet the wildfire-prepared neighborhood standard.

Among the specifications, homes are spaced 10 feet apart to help slow the progression of a fire.

KB Home’s new wildfire-resilient neighborhood in Escondido, California.

CNBC

“This subdivision built by KB Home, it’s really the test bed to show this and demonstrate it,” said Roy Wright, CEO of IBHS. “I know that KB Home already has two other projects here in Escondido, looking at duplexes and other kinds of town homes, and I do imagine that other builders are going to quickly follow suit. They’re going to be building the homes that Californians want to buy.”

Wright emphasized that part of the draw is not just to build a home that is survivable, but also one that is insurable. Insurance companies have been pulling out of California in droves, leaving homeowners with soaring costs and some without insurance entirely.

Though the homes are billed as fire-resilient, that doesn’t mean they are entirely risk-free. Homeowners and cities are going to have to make changes when it comes to non-combustible landscaping, elevations and even design. The real test will come in the future, should the community be in the line of a wildfire.

“Nothing is ever fireproof. We’re always just seeking to try to narrow those paths of destruction,” said Wright.

Apple’s M4 MacBook Air in a marketing photograph.

Apple

Apple on Wednesday announced new MacBook Air models that update the company’s bestselling laptop with a faster M4 chip and an upgraded videoconferencing camera.

The computers also got a $100 price cut in the U.S., despite tariffs by President Donald Trump that took effect on Tuesday that experts have said could cause the price of electronics to rise.

The 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $999, and the larger, 15-inch model starts at $1,099. Users can pay more for memory and storage upgrades.

Although it has the same design as last year’s MacBook Air, the new computer will also be available in a fresh sky blue color, and it now supports two external monitors. The new MacBook Air goes on sale March 12.

The MacBook Air is one of Apple’s most critical products. Mac sales rose 15% in the December quarter to just under $9 billion in sales. The company attributed that increase to higher sales of laptops even though overall Mac sales, which also include desktop models, are still down from the company’s fiscal 2022. That was a period when computer sales were elevated as a result of people needing laptops for work or school during the pandemic.

Apple’s MacBook Air announcement caps off a flurry of new product releases by the company over the past few weeks.

In addition to the new laptops, Apple on Wednesday announced a high-end Mac Studio desktop with a chip that can run advanced AI. The company also upgraded its iPad Air with an M4 chip on Tuesday, and last month, it announced the low-cost iPhone 16e.

The Mac Studio has more processing power and is designed for people who work on computer graphics, audio or video production or artificial intelligence. It’s not cheap — the computer starts at $1,999, and more powerful configurations can cost over $14,000.

Apple’s new Mac Studio costs $1999 or more.

Apple

Prices watched closely

The MacBook Air price cut comes as Apple’s U.S. pricing is being closely watched by both Apple customers and investors to see what the iPhone maker does in response to the Trump administration’s tariffs.

Apple’s announcement signals that the company isn’t jacking up prices yet.

The new iPad Airs announced this week didn’t see any price change and still start at $599. However, the iPhone 16e costs $599, and it replaced the older low-cost model from 2022 that started at $429.

Analysts at Bank of America Securities last month forecast that PC makers including Apple would likely try to pass increased costs onto buyers. Rival Acer already announced price increases on laptops last month due to U.S. tariffs.

“Tariffs on imported PCs act like a tax that PC vendors largely pass to end customers,” the BofA analysts wrote.

The majority of Apple’s products are made in China and could be affected by two sets of 10% tariffs Trump placed on Chinese imports. Apple’s operations and third-largest market could be affected by Chinese retaliation.

Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Trump at the White House last month. After the meeting, Trump said that Apple “doesn’t want to be in the tariffs.” Cook told investors in January that Apple is “monitoring the situation.”

Apple has expanded its supply chain in recent years. Some Macs are now assembled in Malaysia or Vietnam, production locations which would avoid Chinese import duties. Apple didn’t say where the new MacBook Airs are assembled.

Correction: The new MacBook Air supports two external monitors. An earlier version of this article said it supported three external monitors.

A week ago, OpenAI released a tool that can go online to shop for groceries or book a restaurant reservation. Now it is offering A.I. technology that can gather information from across the internet and synthesize it in concise reports.

OpenAI unveiled the new tool, called Deep Research, with a demonstration on YouTube on Sunday, days after showing the technology to lawmakers, policymakers and other officials in Washington.

“It can do complex research tasks that might take a person anywhere from 30 minutes to 30 days,” Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, said at the event in Washington. By contrast, Deep Research can accomplish such tasks in five to 30 minutes, depending on the complexity.

Artificial intelligence researchers call this kind of technology an A.I. agent. While chatbots can answer questions, write poems and generate images, agents can use other software and services on the internet. This might involve anything from ordering dinner via DoorDash to synthesizing information from across the internet.

During the briefing on Capitol Hill, Mr. Weil showed the technology gathering information about Albert Einstein. He asked the tool to put together a detailed report about the physicist for a hypothetical Senate staff member preparing for a congressional hearing where Einstein is a nominee for U.S. Secretary of Energy.

In addition to providing information about Einstein’s background and personality, it generated five questions that a senator could ask the physicist to determine whether he was the right person for the job.

“It can surf the web and understand text and images and P.D.F.s,” Mr. Weil said. “And it can do this recursively. It can do one search and that leads to other searches and then it can synthesize all the information it has learned.”

Mr. Weil said that the reports generated by the tool included citations showing where the information was found. But A.I. technologies like this can still get things wrong or even make up information — a phenomenon that A.I. researchers call “hallucination.” This may mean that it provides incorrect citations.

OpenAI said that the tool may struggle to distinguish authoritative information from rumors and that it often failed to accurately convey when it was uncertain about the information it was delivering.

Still, Mr. Weil argued that the tool could help the United States accelerate economic growth. He added that the tool would be particularly useful for people in fields like finance, science and law.

(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, accusing them of copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems. OpenAI and Microsoft have denied those claims.)

OpenAI said that, beginning on Sunday, Deep Research would be available to anyone who is subscribed to ChatGPT Pro, a $200-a-month service that provides access to all of the company’s latest tools. It plans to also offer the tool via its other paid services.

The tool is based on the same technology that drives ChatGPT. This technology is what A.I. researchers call a neural network — a mathematical system that can learn skills by analyzing data.

In recent months, OpenAI has developed versions of the technology that can “reason” through tasks, determining through trial and error what actions to take. Deep Research is based on the company’s newest reasoning technology, OpenAI o3.
