A Texas-based chain has once again been named America’s top grocery store, beating out major competitors, including Amazon, Costco and Trader Joe’s.

San Antonio-based H-E-B was ranked the No. 1 grocery retailer in the US for the fifth time in nine years, according to Dunnhumby’s latest annual ranking of grocery stores.

The family-owned company, which was founded in 1905 and operates more than 440 stores, is “firmly entrenched as the top retailer due to its superior ability to deliver a combination of better savings, quality, experience, and assortment,” the study found.

Massachusetts-based Market Basket ranked second, followed by Wisconsin-based Woodman’s in third.

“For the first time, the leading three retailers in the United States are all regional chains,” Dunnhumby noted.

Costco was ranked No. 4, followed by Aldi, WinCo Foods, Trader Joe’s, Amazon, Wegmans and ShopRite rounding out the top 10.

Amazon, which topped the rankings in 2021 and 2022, slipped two spots this year, while Sam’s Club dropped six places.

The family-owned company was founded in 1905 and operates more than 440 stores. Ron – stock.adobe.com

The study evaluated 81 major US grocery stores, combining financial performance with survey responses from more than 11,000 American shoppers.

Participants were asked about pricing, quality, convenience, operations and online ordering.

The rankings come as consumers face mounting financial pressure.

Costco was ranked No. 4, followed by Aldi, WinCo Foods, Trader Joe’s, Amazon, Wegmans and ShopRite rounding out the top 10. Christopher Sadowski

Shopper confidence declined last year amid concerns over rising prices, limited job opportunities and stagnant wages, according to Matt O’Grady, president of the Americas for Dunnhumby.

“Consumers across all income levels are feeling the squeeze and making more price-conscious choices,” O’Grady said in a statement.

“In this environment, building trust with American shoppers has never been more critical.”

The study evaluated 81 major US grocery stores. Christopher Sadowski

Overall food prices were up 0.7% in December and 3.1% from a year ago, according to the December consumer price index (CPI).

The all-items CPI index showed inflation pushed prices 0.3% higher last month and 2.7% on an annual basis.

Scientists at a Texas-based company made a major breakthrough towards reviving the dodo bird nearly 300 years after extinction.

Colossal Biosciences announced on Wednesday that researchers had, for the first time, successfully grown pigeon primordial germ cells, the precursor cells to sperm and eggs.

“Our avian team’s breakthrough in deriving culture conditions that allow pigeon primordial germ cells to survive long-term is a significant advancement for dodo de-extinction,” Colossal CEO and co-founder Ben Lamm said in a press release.

Colossal founder Ben Lamm celebrated the breakthrough on Wednesday. Courtesy of Colossal

“This progress highlights how Colossal’s investment in de-extinction technology is driving discovery and developing tools for both our de-extinction and conservation efforts,” Lamm said.

The company’s Avian Genetic Group described this as a “pivotal step” toward bringing back the flightless bird which last roamed the Earth in 1662 on the island of Mauritius, and which has become synonymous with the phenomenon of extinction.

“The first cell culture recipe was for chicken PGCs, and was published nearly 20 years ago,” said Anna Keyte, Avian Species Director said in the release.

“Unfortunately, that recipe has not worked on any other bird species tested, even closely related species like quail. Colossal’s discovery of a recipe for pigeons dramatically expands avian reproductive technologies and is the foundation for our dodo work.”

The last known living dodo bird was recorded in 1662. AP

Colossal, who already boasts high-profile investors like actors Chris Hemsworth, Nicholas Braun and activist-influencer Paris Hilton, is attempting to raise $120 million more to achieve the de-extinction of the dodo and several other long-gone species.

The woolly mammoth, the Tasmanian tiger, the dire wolf, and the South Island Giant Moa are all in Colossal’s sights for species revival.

Back in July, Colossal announced they were teaming up with “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson to bring back the Moa, which is native to the auteur’s home of New Zealand.

The company claimed to have revived the 13,000-year-extinct “dire wolf” in April by mixing ancient DNA harvested from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull with DNA from a contemporary gray wolf.

Colossal has previously projected that they would be able to produce woolly mammoth calves by the year 2028.

A gambling bust has resulted in twenty-two individuals being detained in connection with illegal gaming in Texas.

According to the report from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, a total of sixty gambling machines were seized alongside $67,350. Citations and charges were issued as part of the bust that took place at Royal Room 777 in the 2300 block of East Southcross Boulevard.

Texas gambling bust nets authorities cash and gambling assets

The news of the bust, initially reported by KSAT, included an in-depth interview with Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. He spoke of the mechanics involved in the illegal activity and the parties responsible.

Those complicit in the bust included 18 gamblers and four employees of Royal Room 777, said Salazar.

“It was one business establishment, but broken into two,” he said. “One part had the machines where people gamble, on the other part, what seems to be the money side of the operation.”

Three of the four detained employees will face charges, including Randy Hinojosa, Jason Garcia, and Jacqueline Gonzalez.

The Sheriff’s Office has levied gambling promotion, keeping a gambling place, possession of a gambling paraphernalia device, and gambling-organized crime charges against the trio.

The fourth employee, Jeannete Zavala, was alleged to have denied entry to the property and was seen “locking doors” to deter the authorities’ access.

Bexar County cracks down on gambling den

Salazar said, “For what seems like legal reasons, they (Royal Room 777) were trying to keep some separation between the two. We are looking at filing a possible engagement in organized criminal activity as well.”

The eighteen players at the gambling establishment have all been issued Class C citations, which is a misdemeanor in the state of Texas.

The Bexar County Sheriff stated that the two establishments tried to work around the legal loopholes of the state legislature with the distance between the playing and payout spaces.

“You play over here, but you don’t receive the payment over here; they (Royal Room 777) give you a token to go over to the next business and redeem that token for cash payment. That is what makes it illegal,” continued the Sheriff.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is now hunting for the owner, or owners, of the establishment as part of a wider case.

“We know that this is a busy business strip center, and we would ask for people to be patient with us as we conduct this operation,” concluded Salazar.

In related news, the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) made a sizable seizure of 249 illegal slot machines and $194,262 in “suspected gambling” proceeds in Port Richey.

“Illegal casinos are not part of regulated gaming in Florida. These operations exploit vulnerable individuals, create an uneven playing field for lawful businesses, and bring unwanted crime and disorder to the communities in which they operate,” said Director of Gaming Enforcement at the FGCC, Carol Herold.

A conservative legal group has launched a civil rights complaint against the Texas Roadhouse restaurant chain, alleging it illegally discriminates by using Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), gender and racial demographic criteria in its hiring practices.

The complaint, filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by America First Legal (AFL), accused Texas Roadhouse of using race and gender as factors in determining who should be appointed to its Board of Directors, tracking employees’ race, gender and ethnicity, as well as running “reputational risk” to its business due to its DEI policies. AFL is alleging that Texas Roadhouse is in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“The evidence demonstrates that the Company’s hiring, promotion, and recruitment practices violate state and federal law. The evidence also demonstrates that the Company has prioritized unlawful diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and policies over shareholder value,” the complaint alleged.

Texas Roadhouse wrote that it is committed to “attracting, retaining, engaging, recognizing, and developing a workforce that mirrors the diversity of our guests” and provided a chart breaking down the percentages of their employees and managers who were either women or people of color in its 2024 10-K annual report.

A Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Teterboro, NJ on Nov. 17, 2024. Christopher Sadowski

The AFL filing also said that, because of increased pressure from the government and investors to disclose its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) targets, including targets related to diversity and inclusion efforts, the restaurant chain is exposing itself to reputational risk as well as the threat of potential litigation.

The complaint accuses Texas Roadhouse of acting with an “inappropriate disregard of your fiduciary duties to Texas Roadhouse and its shareholders.”

According to the Texas Roadhouse 2024 sustainability report, the company takes DEI factors such as gender and race into consideration when determining nominees to its Board of Directors, along with other factors such as Board experience and financial acumen.

Texas Roadhouse wrote that it is committed to “attracting, retaining, engaging, recognizing, and developing a workforce that mirrors the diversity of our guests.” Christopher Sadowski

The report also touts professional development programs geared towards identity, including a Women’s Leadership Summit and African American Leadership Summit.

“Texas Roadhouse’s policies are a relic of an era where DEI contaminated American culture with the false belief that good intentions make discrimination okay,” America First Legal Counsel Will Scolinos told Fox News Digital in a statement.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives have been in retreat in corporate America since President Donald Trump returned to office.

Trump signed a flurry of executive orders targeting “illegal DEI” starting on his first day back in the Oval Office, which banned federal agencies from contracting with companies that engage in DEI policies.

According to the Texas Roadhouse 2024 sustainability report, the company takes DEI factors such as gender and race into consideration. Christopher Sadowski

Companies like Disney, Paramount and Facebook have all rolled back or eliminated their DEI programs.

Other companies, such as Costco and Apple, have resisted activist shareholder pressure to reform or eliminate their DEI initiatives.

Cracker Barrel, another restaurant chain, is also facing an AFL civil rights complaint over its DEI policies.

The complaint alleged that Cracker Barrel’s “Business Resource Groups” discriminate on the basis of race and sex by only offering employment benefits to workers who fit certain demographic criteria.

Texas Roadhouse did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

The company said it expects third-quarter earnings between $1.36 and $1.60 per share, a midpoint of $1.48 per share. That fell short of an LSEG estimate of $1.50.

Texas Instruments anticipates revenue between $4.45 billion and $4.48 billion. The midpoint of $4.63 billion was slightly ahead of the $4.59 billion expected by analysts.

In an earnings call with analysts, CEO Haviv Ilan said the company is experiencing a “shallow” recovery in the automotive sector and said customers may have lingering worries over tariffs and geopolitical uncertainty.

Despite the postearnings slump, Texas Instruments posted a 16% year-over-year jump in revenue. The company reported earnings of $1.41 per share on $4.45 billion in revenue, surpassing the earnings of $1.35 per share on $4.36 billion in revenue expected by LSEG analysts.

Ilan said some of the second-quarter strength may have come from a pull-forward in demand to acquire inventory ahead of tariffs.

Net income for the company rose 15% to $1.3 billion, or $1.41 per share, from $1.13 billion, or $1.22 per share, a year ago.

A SpaceX crane collapse at the company’s Starbase, Texas facility on Tuesday has prompted an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the federal agency told CNBC in an email.

The crane collapse was captured in a livestream by Lab Padre on YouTube, a SpaceX-focused channel. Clips from Lab Padre were widely shared on social media, including on X, which is owned by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether any SpaceX workers were injured as a result of the incident. Musk and other company executives didn’t respond to a request for comment.

A spokesperson for OSHA told CNBC that more details will be available after the investigation is complete.

SpaceX has a history of workplace injuries that exceed industry average, Reuters previously reported. In 2014, one of the company’s employees, Simon LeBlanc, died on the job due to what OSHA concluded was a failure by the company to protect him from a clear hazard.

Earlier this year, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Musk-led effort by the Trump administration to slash the size of the federal government, cut OSHA’s resources and shuttered at least 11 of its field offices. Through DOGE, Musk sought to reduce federal agency budgets, personnel and even certain regulations, limiting their ability to investigate and enforce existing laws.

The SpaceX crane collapse followed a string of explosions and other setbacks for the company’s Starship Super Heavy launch vehicle, the largest rocket ever flown, which is key to Musk’s ambition to transport equipment and people to Mars.

Environmental activists in the U.S. and Mexico say those explosions have harmed sensitive habitat, wildlife and marine life. SpaceX said, in posts online, that its activity had not harmed the surrounding area during the most recent explosion on June 18.

Starship was previously expected to play an important part in NASA’s effort to return to the moon. SpaceX had earned more than $20 billion in federal government contracts mostly from the Department of Defense and NASA.

Meanwhile, NASA’s proposed lean budget for the next year has not yet been authorized by Congress and could impact the agency’s business with SpaceX, and shift the focus of its missions.

Musk, who was President Donald Trump’s biggest financial backer, sought to appoint his friend Jared Issacman, a commercial astronaut, to lead NASA under the second Trump administration. Trump withdrew his nomination of Isaacman as the president bickered with Musk in the waning days of the billionaire’s formal involvement with the White House.

WATCH: SpaceX valuation may be conservative, investor says.

Flames rise as a SpaceX rocket explodes in Brownsville, Texas, U.S., June 18, 2025, in this screengrab obtained from a social media video.

Therocketfuture Via X | Via Reuters

A SpaceX Starship rocket on Wednesday exploded at the Starbase facility in Texas during routine testing in preparation for a launch flight, according to local authorities and live stream footage.

The rocket “experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase” at 11 p.m. local time, SpaceX said on social media, noting “a safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for.”

Local authorities said that Starship “suffered a catastrophic failure and exploded,” with no injuries reported at the time of writing and an investigation is now underway. Live stream footage of Starbase showed the rocket burst into flame, shooting a large fireball into the sky.

Another Starship launch was expected to take place by the end of this month.

It’s been a tempestuous ride for Elon Musk’s mammoth Starship, after three flight launch attempts devolved in fiery glory and air-traffic stopping debris this year to date. Notably, the rocket model has taken off successfully in previous instances, but its vast scale — standing 120 meters (394 feet) tall when factoring in the Super Heavy booster — has raised concerns over its overall reliability and requirements for orbital refueling once in flight.

Yet Musk has clinched his hopes on Starship as the key vehicle for both NASA’s third and fourth Artemis missions — part of a broader plan to return humans to the Moon — due to take place over 2027-2028. The rocket is also set to play a role in launching the Starlab private space station in the transition to commercial space orbiting labs once the International Space Station retires after 2030.

Critically, Starship is also central to Musk’s — and former ally U.S. President Donald Trump’s — broader ambitions to colonize Mars. The rocket is set to ferry Optimus robots to the red planet by the end of 2026, with Musk in March saying, “If those landings go well, then human landings may start as soon as 2029, although 2031 is more likely.”

Starbase, Texas, has notified some residents that they might “lose the right to continue using” their property as they do today, according to a memo obtained by CNBC.

The town, home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is considering a new zoning ordinance and citywide map.

The notice, sent to property owners in a proposed “Mixed Use District,” would allow for “residential, office, retail, and small-scale service uses.”

Starbase plans to host a public hearing on June 23 about the proposed new zoning and map for the town. The notice was signed by Kent Myers, the city administrator for Starbase who recently accepted the job, according to ValleyCentral.com.

Representatives for Starbase and SpaceX did not respond to requests for further information on Thursday.

A “type-C municipal corporation,” Starbase was officially formed earlier this month after Musk’s aerospace and defense contractor prevailed in a local election. It is now run by officials who are SpaceX employees and former employees.

As of early this year, the population of Starbase stood at around 500 people, with around 260 directly employed by SpaceX, the Texas Tribune reported. Most other residents of Starbase are relatives of SpaceX employees.

The company town includes the launch facility where SpaceX conducts test flights of its massive Starship rocket, and company-owned land covering a 1.6-square-mile area.

Starbase is holding its first city commission meeting Thursday, two days after SpaceX conducted its ninth test flight of the massive Starship rocket from the Texas coast facility.

The rocket exploded during the test flight, marking a catastrophic loss and a third consecutive setback for the aerospace and defense contractor. Following the incident, Musk, who also leads Tesla, focused on data and lessons to be learned from the explosions.

The FAA said there had been “no reports of public injury or damage to public property” on Wednesday.

The Starship system was developed to transport people and equipment around Earth and to the Moon, and Musk envisions the rocket someday being used to colonize Mars.

Musk’s rocket maker has taken in more than $20 billion in government contracts since 2008 and is poised to take in several billion dollars annually for years to come.

Establishing Starbase as a company town helps SpaceX attain nearly unfettered permission to build, test or launch from its industrial complex on the Texas Gulf Coast.

The town is still trying to win the ability to close a main road and beaches for launch activity during the week without seeking municipal or other authority.

Here’s the text of the zoning memo sent to Starbase residents:

May 21, 2025

Dear Starbase Property Owner/Property Occupant,

Notice is hereby given that the City Commission for the City of Starbase will conduct a Public Hearing on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., at the City of Starbase temporary city hall located at 39046 LBJ Boulevard, Brownsville, TX 78521, to hear public comments, consider and act upon the adoption of a Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance and city wide Zoning Map.

Our goal is to ensure that the zoning plan reflects the City’s vision for balanced growth, protecting critical economic drivers, ensuring public safety, and preserving green spaces. You are receiving this notice because you own the above listed property that will be located in the “Mixed Use District” and will be impacted if the zoning ordinance is approved.

The Mixed Use District allows for a blend of residential, office, retail, and small-scale service uses. A proposed zoning map is enclosed with this notice. You may view the draft zoning ordinance on the City’s website 72 hours prior to the above listed public hearing.

The City is required by Texas law to notify you of the following: THE CITY OF STARBASE IS HOLDING A HEARING THAT WILL DETERMINE WHETHER YOU MAY LOSE THE RIGHT TO CONTINUE USING YOUR PROPERTY FOR ITS CURRENT USE, PLEASE READ THIS NOTICE CAREFULLY. The foregoing notice is required by Texas Local Government Code section 211.006(a-1). The proposed zoning ordinance is based on current and existing uses.

Please contact City Administrator Kent Myers [email address redacted] with any questions or written comments. Your written comments must be submitted by 3:00 pm on June 22, 2025. Public comments may also be given at the above listed public hearing.

Best Wishes,

Kent Myers

Google agreed to pay nearly $1.4 billion to the state of Texas to settle allegations of violating the data privacy rights of state residents, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Friday.

Paxton sued Google in 2022 for allegedly unlawfully tracking and collecting the private data of users.

The attorney general said the settlement, which covers allegations in two separate lawsuits against the search engine and app giant, dwarfed all past settlements by other states with Google for similar data privacy violations.

Google’s settlement comes nearly 10 months after Paxton obtained a $1.4 billion settlement for Texas from Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to resolve claims of unauthorized use of biometric data by users of those popular social media platforms.

“In Texas, Big Tech is not above the law,” Paxton said in a statement on Friday.

“For years, Google secretly tracked people’s movements, private searches, and even their voiceprints and facial geometry through their products and services. I fought back and won,” said Paxton.

“This $1.375 billion settlement is a major win for Texans’ privacy and tells companies that they will pay for abusing our trust.”

Google spokesman Jose Castaneda said the company did not admit any wrongdoing or liability in the settlement, which involves allegations related to the Chrome browser’s incognito setting, disclosures related to location history on the Google Maps app, and biometric claims related to Google Photo.

Castaneda said Google does not have to make any changes to products in connection with the settlement and that all of the policy changes that the company made in connection with the allegations were previously announced or implemented.

“This settles a raft of old claims, many of which have already been resolved elsewhere, concerning product policies we have long since changed,” Castaneda said.

“We are pleased to put them behind us, and we will continue to build robust privacy controls into our services.”

Sergio Flores | Afp | Getty Images

Over the weekend, Elon Musk got his new company town along the Texas Gulf Coast. Controlling the city are three SpaceX employees, who all ran unopposed.

As NBC News reported, the election determining incorporation of the city of Starbase concluded on Saturday night, with 212 votes in favor and only six against. Just 143 votes were needed for the measure to pass.

Starbase was victorious in becoming a type C city, which in Texas applies to a previously unincorporated city, town or village of between 201 and 4,999 inhabitants. The city includes the SpaceX launch facility and company-owned land covering a 1.6 square-mile area.

The mayor is 36-year-old Bobby Peden, who has spent more than 12 years working for SpaceX and is currently vice president for Texas test and launch operations. Prior to joining the rocket maker in 2013, Peden was a graduate research assistant at the University of Texas at Austin, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Starbase has two commissioners, both from the SpaceX employee ranks.

One is Jenna Petrzelka, 39, who was an operations engineering manager at SpaceX until July, and now identifies as a philanthropist, according to her application to be on the ballot. She’s married to Joe Petrzelka, a vice president of Starship engineering and almost 14-year veteran at SpaceX.

The other commissioner is Jordan Buss, 40, a senior director of environmental health and safety for SpaceX who joined the company in 2023.

Musk, who has assumed a central role in President Donald Trump’s administration responsible for slashing the size of the federal government, began acquiring land for SpaceX in Boca Chica, Texas, about a decade ago. The first integrated Starship vehicle launched from the site, known as Starbase, in April 2023, and exploded in mid-flight.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service soon disclosed details about the aftermath of the explosion, including that a “3.5-acre fire started south of the pad site on Boca Chica State Park land,” following the test flight.

State and federal regulators have fined SpaceX for violations of the Clean Water Act, and said the company had repeatedly polluted waters in the Boca Chica area. Environmental advocates and indigenous groups have also sued both the Federal Aviation Administration and SpaceX over the company’s flight tests and launch activity in the area.

Those groups said in legal filings that SpaceX caused harm to local habitat and endangered species due to vehicle traffic, noise, heat, explosions and fragmentation caused by the company’s construction, rocket testing and launch practices.

A SpaceX spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a post on X on Saturday, the account for StarbaseTX wrote, “Becoming a city will help us continue building the best community possible for the men and women building the future of humanity’s place in space.”
