Turkish soccer has been rocked by the ongoing gambling scandal that implicated hundreds of its match officials when the news broke in late 2025.

A far-reaching investigation ordered by Turkish Football Federation President, Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, was instigated to “drain the swamp,” but instead, it revealed deeper, murkier waters that lie beneath.

Now, with more than 1,000 players suspended and nearly two-thirds of elite referees implicated in illegal betting, Turkey faces the deepest crisis in its soccer history. It reflects long-standing issues that have shaped the modern era of the game in Turkey from fierce club rivalries, suspicions of favoritism, volatile fan culture, to a history of disputes over governance and fairness.

We look at how the situation materialized and what happens next in the hotbed that is soccer in Turkey?

The climate behind the scandal

When you think of the game in the large Eurasian nation that spans the two continents, you are met with images of passion, fervor, fanaticism, hostility, and controversy.

Turkish soccer isn’t for the faint-hearted, with the noise and color created by the strongly partisan fans in the crowd having a big impact on the pitch.

Referee scandal in Turkey!

— DW Sports (@dw_sports) October 29, 2025

The standard of the players, teams, and their performances in European competitions isn’t quite at the level of 10 and 20 years ago, but it is more than just a game, where emotions run deep, often beyond the full-time whistle.

That is what has transpired with the gambling scandal that has engulfed Turkey, but the game has been mired in controversy for many years.

With suspicions of favoritism toward the big Istanbul clubs (Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas), referees have been closely scrutinized and maligned. While these accusations have not been proven, they have contributed to an atmosphere of mistrust in domestic officiating.

Fans of those clubs have railed against big decisions going against them, while the recent onset of VAR (video assistant referees) has meant decisions are pored over and analyzed to a great degree.

This means talking points are exacerbated, while peculiar on-field decisions are opened up like a can of worms.

Haciosmanoglu wanted reform to be implemented on his watch, but first, there is dirty work to be done.

“As a federation, we start by cleaning up our own back yard,” said the president.

“If we want to bring Turkish football to the place it deserves, we have to clean up whatever dirt there is.”

According to findings from the federation’s internal investigation, the probe uncovered verifiable evidence that 371 of the 571 active referees at the top levels of the game held betting accounts.

Almost half of that number (152) were discovered to have active accounts, including seven Super Lig (top flight) match officials.

Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu tarafından 27 Ekim 2025 tarihinde, Sayın Başkanımız İbrahim Ethem Hacıosmanoğlu’nun basın toplantısında yaptığı açıklama ile “Futbol Disiplin Talimatı” içerisinde kalan kişilerin, futbola yönelik bahis oynayıp oynamadıklarına yönelik disiplin… pic.twitter.com/TepwaEQqvU

— TFF (@TFF_Org) November 12, 2025

In one example, a referee was found to have placed more than 18,000 soccer bets over five years.

This is disastrous, undermining the integrity of their roles and the game overall, and officials warned that further revelations could follow as the inquiry continues.

History of scandal in Turkish soccer

This betting scandal is not a new phenomenon to soccer in Turkey, where enmity and animosity have always been present.

Back in 2011, a confirmed match-fixing scandal emerged in a tangled web involving bribery, extortion, organized crime, and ultimately, prison sentences.

Four years later, Fenerbahce’s team bus was travelling to a game when it came under live gunfire. The club publicly condemned the attack and suggested it may have been linked to the hostile atmosphere and speculation surrounding match-fixing at the time, though this connection was never formally proven.

Then, two years ago, Ankaragücü president Faruk Koca marched onto the pitch after a game against Rizespor and assaulted a referee, punching him in the face, which was captured on camera and widely criticized.

A long-held distrust, particularly among fans, in domestic officials has even led to overseas referees being appointed for some of Turkey’s biggest fixtures. This measure, while not proof of corruption, reflects how deeply rooted the perception of bias has become.

Soccer authorities in Turkey have often attempted to play down concerns, reassuring the public that fears of corruption were overstated. However, those reassurances frequently failed to convince, and many supporters remained adamant that governance itself was part of the problem.

Hacıosmanoglu’s recent intervention, and the findings that followed, have brought some of those long-standing suspicions into sharper focus.

The situation escalated into a full-blown crisis when further investigations led to more than 1,000 footballers across several leagues being suspended pending review for suspected betting violations.

In total, 102 professional players from the top two divisions have already been formally sanctioned with bans ranging from 45 days to 12 months for confirmed breaches of betting regulations.

That cohort includes 25 Super Lig players, including high-profile figures such as Galatasaray and Turkey defender Eren Elmali, his teammate Metehan Baltaci, as well as Ersin Destanoglu and Necip Uysal from Besiktas.

Eren Elmalı explains the situation and reaffirms his commitment to fair play. Credit: Eren Elmali / Instagram

At present, the top two leagues are continuing with reduced squads, due to the bans, while the third and fourth tiers have been mothballed, to allow authorities to wade through the mess.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has suspended 149 referees and match officials as part of its clean-up operation and has allocated additional resources to VAR oversight, whistleblowing channels, and integrity monitoring. Restoring trust will take significant time.

As part of the broader crackdown, Istanbul law enforcement has also detained or targeted 21 additional individuals, including club executives, as part of ongoing criminal inquiries.

Under Turkey’s law on the Prevention of Violence and Irregularities in Sports, match-fixing brings the potential of one to three years in prison and heavy fines, with an increase of five to twelve years if organized crime is involved.

Investigations continue with the police and authorities still tasked to bring the perpetrators to account.

How does Turkish soccer recover from the gambling scandal?

For President Haciosmanoglu, this is painstaking work that is required to clean up soccer in Turkey and to begin to restore its soul.

“We believe we will succeed on this path to clean football,” he stressed.

“We are aware that this is a long and difficult path, however, every evening has its morning. The sun will surely rise after the darkness.

“Our duty is to elevate Turkish football to its rightful place and to purge it of all its filth.”

He continued, “Football is more than sport, it is unity, pride, and peace.”

The reputation management will be a long-term aim, but for now, the TFF has to make gains and demonstrate progress that it has cleaned up its act.

For too long, a blind eye and obfuscation have been the approach, instead of clarity and integrity. Turkish refereeing has been compromised, rather than strewn with erratic decision-making, seemingly justifying much of the anger and suspicion.

Haciosmanoglu’s line in the sand has to be the turning point for recovery and rehabilitation of the game’s image internationally, but that won’t be an easy fix.

The fightback includes strict protocols around match official licensing, enhanced monitoring of betting patterns, and a moral commitment to preserve Turkish soccer for the fans of tomorrow and the future.

“Our moral debt is to deliver a purified game. The next generation deserves nothing less,” said the TFF President.

UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, is also watching, with the threat of punitive sanctions if the national federation does not effectively fix the problem.

Turkey’s news agency, ANKA, shared written correspondence from the press office, which confirmed that:

“UEFA is in contact with the Turkish Football Federation concerning this matter. We have no further comment at this stage.”

Ultimately, Turkey’s challenge is to rebuild trust in a sport whose identity has long been shaped by emotion, rivalry, and scrutiny. Restoring credibility will therefore require cultural change, transparent governance, and a commitment to fairness that resonates from the TFF’s headquarters to the smallest local club. The question now is whether Turkish soccer can seize this moment and transform a deep-rooted crisis into the foundation for lasting reform.

Women’s soccer is becoming hugely popular, with fans breaking records in viewership and attendance, but unlike sponsors and investors, sportsbooks have yet to fully follow.

As the industry continues to prove of interest to many, it’s providing sportsbook operators with the opportunity to thrive in a growing market, but are they slowly turning their attention to the sport? Or leaving it behind? The betting industry may be lagging behind fans and sponsors.

In the sporting world, men’s soccer has long dominated in many countries around the world, but this growth could provide the chance for operators to accelerate their investment into the women’s sport market. It’s now a question of whether companies will evolve with the interest or if the sole dominance of the men’s industry will prevail.

These shifts are challenging sportsbooks to rethink how they approach a rapidly maturing market.

Women’s soccer is quickly growing in popularity

Women’s soccer is growing at a very fast pace, with more people than ever before tuning in to watch games on TV and support in person.

In a report by SPORTFIVE, it was found that the most prevalent reason behind fans starting to follow women’s soccer is due to an interest in the national team. The recent tournaments have proven to be successful in capturing attention, with the recent UEFA Women’s EURO’s being marked as the best-attended Women’s European Championship ever.

A total of 29 of 31 matches sold out and a record-breaking number of tickets were sold ahead of the tournament beginning. A total of over 160 nationalities were represented amongst the overall ticket holders, with the event being the most viewed and engaged with Women’s Euro ever on UEFA social media, even ahead of the final.

While men’s UEFA tournaments still pull in massive global audiences, women’s competitions are catching up fast, with year-over-year growth ranging from 25% to more than 400% depending on the event. Take the Women’s EURO 2025, for example: it drew record-breaking total viewership, and social media engagement jumped 55% during the group stage alone compared to the previous tournament.

The business behind women’s soccer is growing

As the interest in women’s soccer has evidently increased over the last few years, the business behind it has been rising too.

It was only in July this year when the first woman to break the £1 million ($1.35 million) mark for a transfer took place, with Canadian forward Olivia Smith making the high-profile move from Liverpool to Arsenal.

“It’s a privilege and an honour. Everything that the club has accomplished is so massive, and for me to now be a part of that, I’m very excited.”

Watch Olivia Smith’s very first Arsenal interview

— Arsenal Women (@ArsenalWFC) July 17, 2025

While the transfers for male players go for significantly more, this move signified a shift within women’s soccer as more money is starting to be put behind the teams.

Just a few months later, in September, the record was broken again as Grace Geyoro moved from Paris Saint-Germain to London City Lionesses in a $1.9 million deal.

The best sign for a big opportunity? When the experts say: “Don’t do it.”

When I told Serena I was starting a women’s soccer team, she pushed back. She knew how hard it would be. She’d lived it.

That kind of resistance confirms I’m on the edge of something about to be HUGE. pic.twitter.com/OVphRqqPL4

— Alexis Ohanian (@alexisohanian) June 9, 2025

In the US, women’s sport in general is growing exponentially. Revenue is projected to reach $2.35 billion in 2025, a 25% year-over-year increase, according to Deloitte.

Alexis Ohanian, founding control owner of Angel City FC, told the Fortune Global Forum in Riyadh that this surge stems from rising team valuations.

Investments in women’s sports were long “suppressed,” he said, and while the sector is still “a ways from [being] overheated,” valuations and revenues are now “whipsaw[ing] back quickly.”

He pointed to the National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) record $110 million Denver expansion fee as evidence that fees have jumped “more than 100x” in just a few years. “That sounds like a tech story,” Ohanian said. “It’s a women’s sports story.”

Ohanian predicted that women’s sports will see billion-dollar teams within five years. For comparison, every NFL and NBA team is already valued at over $5 billion, and more than a dozen MLB franchises are worth more than $4 billion.

Are there commercial opportunities for women’s soccer players?

In a 2022 UEFA report, ‘The Business Case for Women’s Football,’ it was estimated that there would be a sixfold increase in commercial value over the following decade, potentially reaching an annual value of €686 million ($794 million) by 2033. It was also estimated that club sponsorship could rise to €295 million ($342 million) in that time.

As the industry grows, and more fans are sitting down to watch games (either on TV or in person,) the possible profitability from the business side has been an aspect investors and sponsors are taking note of.

Betclic, a French-based online sports betting operator, announced its partnership with the Arkema Première Ligue (APL) this summer. The company is already a partner of the French Women’s National Teams, with Betclic confirming its commitment to becoming a strong ally of women’s soccer.

Other non-gambling companies have committed to large investments or sponsorships in women’s soccer too, including the UK-based bank Barclays which has a multi-year sponsorship deal as the title sponsor of the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship.

What challenges do sportsbooks face in women’s soccer?

Compared to men’s soccer, women’s leagues don’t have as much historical data or comprehensive statistics. This will change in time, especially as investment within the sport grows.

Another SPORTFIVE report which looked at data from 2023-24 found that the number of sponsorships in women’s professional sports increased by more than 22% YoY across leagues, teams and athletes from 2023 to 2024. When more money is injected into a sport, it allows teams to invest in technology that could provide greater data opportunities.

In men’s soccer, there have been decades of record-keeping and intelligent match-tracking systems that have been deployed which is of use to sportsbooks as they can use this data when creating offerings. In women’s soccer, however, some leagues still lack full data coverage which makes it difficult for operators to have all of the information they need.

It’s through rising interest and investment that infrastructure to capture this data correctly can be applied which is now what is being seen with the larger and more prominent leagues.

Another major challenge for sportsbooks is the changing demographics of women’s soccer. According to a Women’s Sport audience report from 2023, the sport offers stronger relative reach into female audiences than men’s soccer.

This change-up could be of use to many brands, as women generally have higher purchasing power, with women described by some reports as now being the ones to drive the world economy.

However, gambling operators haven’t always seen a huge interest from this demographic. A January 2025 Statista survey conducted amongst adults in the United States shows that 30 percent of male respondents said they had an online sports betting account.

Meanwhile, only 15% of women said they had an account. With this in mind, can sportsbook operators begin to entice a greater demographic to keep up with the growing pace of women’s soccer?

According to a chapter in the book, “Gambling and Sports in a Global Age,” the gender gap in sports betting highlights a real challenge for operators, and the research shows that women bettors often engage with gambling differently.

Young women’s betting is more strongly shaped by peer influence and sports fandom, and they experience higher rates of relationship-related harms than women who gamble on other products, suggesting distinct behavioral patterns and vulnerabilities.

Women’s sports fans also engage through socially driven, digitally mediated environments where gambling is increasingly normalized, yet targeting this growing demographic raises ethical issues, as the report notes that women’s gambling has historically been “suppressed” and is now rising through social pressures and marketing rather than through informed choice.

The dynamics show that attracting women bettors is not simply a commercial opportunity but a responsibility that requires careful, harm-aware design rather than aggressive demographic expansion.

However, if operators do begin to recognize the momentum that is growing, women’s soccer could become a substantial contributor that broadens the betting market. As fan engagement accelerates and investment from major brands pours in, operators who overlook this space risk ceding an entire emerging market to more forward-thinking competitors.

The data gaps will close, the viewership will continue to climb, and the commercial ecosystem will only strengthen. The question now is whether sportsbooks choose to grow with the sport or remain anchored to the old model. Those who delay may soon find that the most dynamic opportunity in modern football has already passed them by.

In a press release, Fellipe Fraga, EstrelaBet’s Chief Business Officer, said the updates are aimed at building stronger customer trust and keeping fans more engaged: “These are two major upgrades for EstrelaBet.
Steve Xeller, Chief Revenue Officer at Stats Perform, said the deal reflects the company’s commitment to expanding live sports data services. “Live streaming creates the ultimate trusted and entertaining in-play betting experience, and we’ve built a popular official rights portfolio, especially in football, delivered through award-winning technology.

“We’ve also invested heavily in expanding the range of competitions covered by our specialist Opta API for sportsbooks. These investments ensure that operators like EstrelaBet, and partners like Altenar, can create personalised, innovative, and engaging sports betting experiences. We look forward to seeing the results they achieve.”

Earlier this year, Bet LiveStreams picked up two big honors. It was named Industry Innovation of the Year for South America at the SBC Americas Awards and also took home the title of Live Streaming Supplier of the Year at the EGR Awards.

Mother’s Day on Sunday marks the launch of an innovative program to improve maternal health by harnessing the power of soccer fandom.

The World Health Organization says maternal mortality is unacceptably high. More than 700 women died every day in 2023 from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, according to a WHO fact sheet released last month.

It’s a challenge that doctors, public health authorities and community workers have been trying to tackle.

Former professional soccer player Morad Fareed thinks he can make progress improving maternal health through a love of sports.

Fareed’s created FC Mother, a community platform pairing expectant and new mothers with a support network. The organization aims to turn global football clubs into platforms to improve public health, a broader concept he calls “H-sports,” or healing sports.

“What we did was unify the world of maternal health and use football as a vehicle to distribute it, to celebrate it, and to gamify it,” said Fareed.

The organization is kicking off what it’s calling the “World Cup of Healing” — a competition that measures health outcomes of the participating women, grouped by their reported soccer fandom.

Mothers access services and connections via the FC Mother platform and then answer regular survey questions that assess their wellbeing. Improvements fuel team progress.

FC Mother has some notable buy-in from researchers at Harvard Medical School and Harvard’s School of Public Health as well as team doctors from Real Madrid, Manchester United and Arsenal FC.

FC Mother is tapping into football’s vast social infrastructure, community, and competitive spirit to transform maternal health.

The initial competition launches on Sunday and runs for 60 days through the FIFA Club World Cup Final in July. This trial run pits three football clubs in Brazil and their associated fanbases of mothers against three in the United States: Mothers of San Diego FC, Mothers of Gotham FC, and Mothers of Omaha Union.

FC Mother ranked the 48 World Cup countries by maternal health outcomes based on data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. The institute’s Global Burden of Disease report puts the United States at 44th place, lower than any other developed country in the world among that cohort based on life-years lost due to poor maternal health outcomes. Brazil ranks 46th.

Team USA in the inaugural health outcomes competition is coached by Jennie Joseph the founder of Commonsense Childbirth, who was named as a woman of the year in 2022 by Time magazine for her national work as a midwife focusing on improving maternal mortality.

Fareed’s goal is to gamify community maternal health via football and prove that it can increase quality-adjusted life-years (QUALYs) for both mothers and children.

A QUALY is one year of life in perfect health, a metric that’s being used by major public health organizations. It’s measured with a survey that asks respondents to self-report mental and emotional health, pain levels and other health domains.

While FC Mother leaves the medical treatment of pregnancy to clinicians, Fareed points to research that illustrates perinatal mental health and robust social support can generate as many as 10 additional higher-quality-of-life years for mothers and their offspring.

“The social determinants of health are the next frontier of maternal health and public health in general,” said Fareed. “It’s not your doctor who you’re going to call. It’s the community around you. It’s the day-to-day interactions you have living your life that drive stress levels, mental wellbeing, emotional wellbeing.”

Just like any other sport, FC Mother’s leaderboard features the stats of the competing teams, but it also offers opportunities for the users to access immediate support from other moms. Those features are available via the FC Mother App or through Meta’s WhatsApp.

But FC Mother isn’t a charity. Fareed intends it to be a for-profit venture. He believes corporations, professional sports, family offices and donor-advised funds will be interested in investing in a platform that delivers health improvements for a fraction of the current costs of medical intervention.

FC Mother hopes the kickoff competition will provide proof-of-concept and convince 40 football clubs to participate in a he maternal health outcomes competition during the World Cup in 2026.

— CNBC’s Jessica Golden contributed to this report.
