And that’s the way it is — good night, and good luck.

CBS News Radio — the century-old home of legendary journalists Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow — is shutting down as network boss Bari Weiss continues to reshape the struggling news network, cutting 6% of its workforce in a Friday bloodbath that claimed 60 to 70 jobs.

Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowksi said Friday that CBS Radio will shut down May 22 with all roles in the unit eliminated — a move that was driven by industry shifts and financial pressure from David Ellison, CEO of CBS parent Paramount Skydance.

The duo told employees that “a shift in radio station programming strategies, coupled with challenging economic realities, has made it impossible to continue the service,” while acknowledging “this was a necessary decision” but “not an easy one.”

CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss shuttered CBS News Radio on Friday as part of broader cuts at the news network. CBS via Getty Images

They emphasized the legacy of the unit, noting CBS News Radio has operated since 1927 — from Edward R. Murrow’s World War II reports to the long-running “World News Roundup” — and said staff would be treated “with care and respect” as the company winds down operations.

Harvey Nagler, who spent 18 years at CBS News including an 18-year stint as CBS News VP of radio before retiring in 2016, said the shuttering of CBS News Radio was premature.

“At some point in time closing it was going to be inevitable, but I don’t believe now was the time to do it,” he said, adding that CBS Radio still had 700 radio stations and 23 million listeners a week.

“Those in a corporate positions were not aware of the clout and the reach of CBS News Radio,” Nagler said, noting that CBS is trying to “rebrand itself” and that it is missing a “massive marketing opportunity” to promote its shows, news stories and movies produced by corporate parent Paramount.

“It’s a profound strategic failure. It’s unfortunate on that basis alone,” he said. “You can’t cut your way to growth.”

From left to right: Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow at the CBS News desk on Oct. 29, 1956. CBS via Getty Images

Indeed, industry insiders are fuming over the decision and underscored the importance of the radio unit to journalism and the country.

“It’s a major impact to the accessibility of information across the country,” Craig Swagler, a former vice president and general manager of CBS Radio Network, told The Post. “We are living at a time where there are fewer and fewer independent voices and where people across the country can turn for information.”

Swagler, who is currently president and CEO of Baltimore Public Media, said before he left CBS three years ago, CBS News Radio had roughly 30 million people listening to it on a weekly basis.

CBS Radio will close up shop on May 22. CBS

He noted that “World News Roundup” — the program that aired on CBS since 1938 — is the “origin of the invention of modern-day broadcast journalism.”

“Edward R. Murrow went to Europe as the education director and continued to phone back home to [CEO William S.] Paley and told him this group in Germany continue to have aggressions against Austria … and this guy Hitler was going to take control and annex Austria,” Swagler recounted.

Murrow convinced the network to do a report, which aired on Sunday, March 13, 1938 — the day of the Nazi invasion of Austria.

CBS Radio more or less invented the practice of taking the listener into the scene and describing it to them in the moment — the blueprint for broadcast as we know it today, the exec said.

“We often look at media as a business and not as a public service,” he added.

Sources griped that David Ellison, the CEO of CBS-parent Paramount Skydance, has prioritized larger investments over retaining CBS Radio. AFP via Getty Images

Another media exec with recent knowledge of CBS Radio’s finances said the unit was break-even, meaning that it wasn’t losing money but also wasn’t bringing any in, either.

Typically, when a business is break-even, execs tend to shed costs before shutting down a unit because it is still bringing in revenue, the person said.

“The business of radio is challenging so I understand the decision on paper,” the source said. “It does tear at the heart of CBS News and its legacy. But, it seems silly to expect this team to hold any of that sacred.”

The source noted that Weiss and Cibrowski were bumping up against the problem of unionized employees when trying to achieve lower headcount.

Many employees across the company are unionized, so the network risks labor grievances or being brought in front of the National Labor Relations Board if does selective layoffs.

But in the case of CBS Radio, no one person was targeted because the whole unit was eliminated, which makes shutting CBS Radio “clean,” the person added.

A fourth CBS source was outraged at Paramount Skydance’s approach of investing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Weiss’ website, The Free Press, instead of salvaging an institution.

“It’s disgusting. Paramount can buy the UFC [rights] for $7.7 billion dollars and give The Free Press $150 million and they can’t keep a legacy that started all of broadcast afloat,” the person said.

“This is legitimately turning the page on the past. It’s a sad day for CBS and a sad day for journalism.”

Wine makers are pulling the cork on California.

Another giant in the world-famous wine growing region is shutting down and slashing staff, making it the fourth since the start of 2026.

Jackson Family wines has stopped production at its Carneros Hill facility in Sonoma’s Carneros region, laying off more than a dozen employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice filed with California authorities on February 12.

Communications director Sean Carrol told the SF Chronicle that Carnero’s Hill – previously owned by Buena Vista Winery – “served as overflow production capacity and was not tied to any specific brand.”

The Jackson Family Wines confirmed the closure of the facility. Ilya S. Savenok

He added the site had “become underutilized,” allowing the company to consolidate.

Jackson Family Wines is known as one of the top US wine producers, the sixth largest wine company in the country.

The company is the sixth-largest wine producer in the country. San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images

It owns the Kendall-Jackson label and about 40 other brands, producing around six million cases a year, according to an industry review. More than 25 of those wineries are in the Golden State.

Last week, major winemaker Gallo announced the closure of a large production facility and the elimination of nearly 100 jobs across the wine growing region of Napa and Sonoma counties.

Considered the world’s largest winemaker by volume, Gallo filed a “warning” notice with the California Employment Development Department on Feb. 12, confirming it will permanently pull the cork on the Ranch Winery in St. Helena.

Jackson Family Wines owns the famed Kendall-Jackson label. Getty Images for NYCWFF

Gallo is also slashing staff at some of its other labels, including the Louis M. Martini Winery and the Orin Swift Tasting Room in St. Helena, as well as J Vineyards and Frei Ranch in Healdsburg.

“Gallo is aligning parts of our operations with our long‑term business strategy to ensure we remain well‑positioned for future success,” a spokesperson for the company told The Post.

“As part of this process, we made the difficult decision to reduce certain Wine Country operations. These changes are driven by market dynamics, evolving consumer demand, and available capacity across our wineries.”

Earlier this month, Foley Family Wines & Spirits shut down its production facility for the historic Central Coast winery Chalone.

Four major wine makers have announced closure of sites since the start of 2026. Neilson Barnard

In January, Constellation Brands notified more than 200 people at the Mission Bell Winery in Madera that they would be out of work. And Jean-Charles Boisset Collection closed two Napa Valley tasting rooms.

According to a recent report from Wine Business Monthly, there were 4,727 wineries in California in 2025. As of February 2026, there are 4,646.

The number of American adults who say they consume alcohol has fallen to 54%, according to an August 2025 Gallup poll.

Mexico’s Ministry of Finance and Public Credit has shut down 13 casinos after a multi-month investigation into organized crime and money laundering.

Working with the Security Cabinet, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit has identified 13 casinos as part of an investigation into organized crime and money laundering. It uncovered signs relating to cash operations, international transfers, and the use of unsupervised digital platforms that labelled the casinos “high financial risk”.

— Hacienda (@Hacienda_Mexico) November 12, 2025

The findings of the investigation have led to Mexican authorities blocking the casinos to protect users and remove any risk of them being used by organized crime groups.

Multimillion-dollar organized crime transactions spotted

In addition, signs of international money laundering were detected at gaming establishments across various regions, including Jalisco, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora, Baja California, State of Mexico, Chiapas, and Mexico City. Some of those casinos are alleged to have carried out multimillion-dollar cash transactions, with transfers going to the US, Romania, Albania, Malta, and Panama.

Further suspicion was raised when it was found that apparent users of digital platforms were not in line with the amount of money being transferred. For example, housewives, students, retirees, and the unemployed were seemingly transferring large sums of money to the real recipient in exchange for a percentage fee, in an attempt to make the income appear as though it had come from casino games.

The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit now plans to file the complaints with the Attorney General, as well as notify the tax authorities.

“With this, the Ministry of Finance reaffirms the commitment of the Government of Mexico to strengthen inter-institutional coordination, prevent criminal infiltration in vulnerable sectors, and consolidate joint actions with security and law enforcement authorities to prevent casinos and betting platforms from being used by alleged organized crime groups, as well as to protect users and the population,” reads the official statement from the Ministry.

Rutherford County Library System (RCLS) in Tennessee have made several headlines during this wave of book censorship. They voted to ban all trans books for minors in the library earlier this year, and the board of the Lineburgh Public Library–one of their branches–voted to remove “transgenderism” books just weeks before the decision was made by the county’s board. Months after passing their anti-trans book policy, the RCLS decided to overturn it. That decision wasn’t out of a change of heart but rather, fear of litigation.

Rutherford County includes the city of Murfreesboro, which passed an anti-LGBTQ+ law in 2023 and later repealed, paying a steep fee following a lawsuit settlement. It is also home to Rutherford County Schools, which have been among the biggest book banners in the state. The ACLU and PEN America filed a lawsuit in the school district over their censorship of materials earlier this year.

Now, the RCLS board is shutting down several of its library branches to “meet new reporting requirements from the TN State Secretary’s Office.” The vaguely worded post offers little insight into what these reporting requirements are, and the post does not explain why two branches of the library system need to shut down for several days in order to meet them.

The answer is likely that this will be a mass book banning without public oversight.

Literary Activism

News you can use plus tips and tools for the fight against censorship and other bookish activism!

Tennessee has been actively updating their statewide library policies since the passage of their 2022 Age-Appropriate Materials Act. In 2024, the law was amended to add even more categories of books deemed illegal with the state. These include books containing nudity, sexual excitement, sexual conduct, or excess violence; it also includes books appealing to “prurient interests,” including LGBTQ+ material.

Both of these laws apply to public school libraries, but Tennessee has also updated their public library standards and the language within it mirrors that of the school-based law. This happened some time in 2023 and is likely related to a suite of legislation related to codifying biological sex as the only accepted identity in the state (another library system in Tennessee, Sumner County–also deeply involved in censorship of materials–recently failed to pass an anti-trans book policy for the fourth time. Their proposal references Act 2023, PC, TCA 4-21-102, and TCA 10-3-10 as justification; see page 9 of the .pdf). It’s also likely blatant over-application of the law.

The 2025 Tennessee Standards for Public Libraries in the Regional System states the following on page 25:

Collection Development Policy (includes a Materials Reconsideration policy)
Minimum Requirements

All materials are selected by the local public library in accordance with the individual public library’s full Collection Development Policy;

The public library’s Collection Development Policy is approved by the public library’s Board of Trustees (or equivalent governing body) at least annually;

All books selected for purchase by the individual public library, through the Regional Library System or otherwise, are reviewed by the public library’s director before purchase, with the library director then sharing a list or lists of newly purchased materials with the public library’s Board of Trustees (or equivalent governing body);

No funds received are used to purchase, nor will the library otherwise acquire, material that constitutes “child pornography,” is “pornographic for minors,” or is “obscene;”

Books and materials that contain sexual themes or content are reviewed by the public library independently for age-appropriateness and cataloged accordingly – even if this overrides the age appropriateness recommended by the publisher;

Request for Reconsideration of Materials: The library has a written, publicly accessible library materials challenge policy that (a) defines which parties may dispute or challenge the library’s age-appropriate designation on materials, with such definition, at a minimum, including a parent or guardian of a minor within the library district, (b) defines the process by which a materials challenge can be initiated, and (c) provides for the results of any such dispute or challenge to be disclosed in the public library’s official Board of Trustee minutes.

Starting in September of this year, all public libraries in the state began to receive letters from Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett. He emphasized that for libraries to receive their funding from the state, they needed to comply with all state and local laws.

The letter specifically cites Trump’s “Defending Women from Gender Ideology,” and states that all libraries needed to review their juvenile materials to ensure they are in compliance with Tennessee’s age-appropriateness law, all federal laws, and all federal executive orders (which are not legally binding and do not override the Constitution).

But why the urgency to shut down the library to review materials? It could be related to a second letter that the Secretary of State sent out in late October, demanding the removal of any books out of compliance of the law within 60 days. The RCLS board chair, the director of the RCLS, and the branch manager of the Linebaugh Public Library received this:

Like we saw happen similarly this summer in Florida, the Tennessee Secretary of State is attempting to wield power in order to drive libraries into compliance with standards that are not legally binding and that indeed are intended to led to mass bannings. Unlike in Florida, though, where schools complied out of fear, in Rutherford, at least, such demands to remove LGBTQ+ materials from the library aligns with the board’s long-term goals. It’s a convenient means of subverting their fears of litigation, which drove them to change their anti-trans book policy earlier this summer. If the directive is from the state, then they “have to” comply.

The Tennessee Secretary of State is granting permission slips to public library boards to ban away. It’s done under the guise of threatening them for noncompliance, but as we know, Rutherford and other systems in the state, including Sumner County, have been looking for the means by which to remove as many LGBTQ+ books from the library as possible.

Rutherford County Library System hired a new library director in June, and now, the director has been put in the position of responding to inquiries from residents wondering why the library is closing down two branches to “review” materials. The new director hails from York County Libraries in South Carolina, which itself has been subject to mass blanket book bans since October of last year.

There is an active anti-censorship group in Rutherford. They were among the first to indicate concerns over potential new changes to the library’s collection policy in late October, just before this closure was announced. Rutherford County Library Alliance will likely begin to organize a response and action in the coming days and will be the first to share updates about the library’s closures. Something library advocates can do in addition to following their lead is keep an eye on any and all LGBTQ+ (and specifically trans-related) books available in the RCLS system. Chances are better than good that titles which have been pulled from school districts statewide will be among the first targets in this potential purge. If you’re local and are able, head into the library this week to borrow any and all titles you think may be at risk of “disappearing” from shelves.

Amazon is closing four more Fresh supermarkets in Southern California as the e-commerce giant continues to focus its grocery strategy around Whole Foods and delivery.

The closures will take place in the coming weeks, Amazon confirmed to CNBC. They follow the shuttering of four other U.S. locations in recent months, in Washington, Virginia, New York and a Los Angeles suburb.

“Certain locations work better than others, and after an assessment, we’ve made the decision to close these Amazon Fresh locations,” Amazon spokesperson Griffin Buch said in a statement. “We’re working closely with affected employees to help them find new roles within Amazon wherever possible.”

At one Fresh supermarket in La Verne, California, employees were told to gather for an all-hands meeting on Wednesday, according to an internal message viewed by CNBC. They learned at the meeting that the store would close in mid-November, and that employees would receive a severance package, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the details were confidential.

The other three stores that are closing are in cities of Mission Viejo, La Habra and Whittier.

Last week, Amazon said it intends to close 14 Fresh grocery stores in the U.K. and convert its five other locations there into Whole Foods markets.

Amazon said it regularly evaluates its store portfolio, which can lead to opening, reopening, relocating or closing certain locations. In the U.S., the company has more than 60 remaining Fresh stores. Last year, the company removed its “Just Walk Out” cashierless technology from the stores. It’s also been culling its footprint of Go cashierless convenience stores.

Amazon has been determined to become a major grocery player for nearly two decades. The company launched Amazon Fresh in 2007, then a pilot project for fresh food delivery, before acquiring upscale chain Whole Foods for $13.7 billion in 2017, its biggest purchase on record.

Amazon debuted its Fresh grocery chain in 2020, with an eye toward mass-market shoppers. The rollout has been turbulent since its early days.

The company opened a flurry of Fresh locations by 2022, but the expansion plans ran into CEO Andy Jassy’s widespread cost-cutting efforts as the company reckoned with the impact of rising interest rates and soaring inflation. In 2023, Amazon announced it would shut some Fresh stores and halt further openings temporarily as it evaluated how to make the chain stand out for shoppers.

While it’s closing Fresh stores, Amazon continues to “innovate and invest in making grocery shopping easier, faster, and more affordable,” Buch said. The company still maintains 500 Whole Foods locations and has opened mini “daily shop” Whole Foods stores in New York City.

Buch said that Amazon serves 150 million U.S. customers with millions of “grocery and everyday essentials available for online delivery, pick-up, or in store shopping.”

On Wednesday, Amazon also launched a new “price-conscious” grocery brand that will be offered online and in its physical stores. And last month, Amazon expanded same-day delivery of fresh foods to more pockets of the U.S.

Jassy and other company executives have touted the success of sales of “everyday essentials” within its online grocery business, which refers to items such as canned goods, paper towels, dish soap and snacks. Jassy told investors at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in May that he remains “bullish” on grocery, calling it a “significant business” for Amazon.

WATCH: Amazon grocery could be a trojan horse to more revenue
