Tis a truth universally acknowledged that in the second week of January, resolutions made in earnest over champagne toasts fizzle out like fireworks. This is the rubber meet road week, when we (or, I) start to crave structure around pledges to practice daily pilates, or “prepare healthy meals.”

The institutionally hosted reading challenge has become a popular support for those of us who wrote “read more” in our journals every December 31st. And though I have a vexed relationship with “the challenge” personally—reading being one of the few realms in my life that doesn’t foster a competitive spirit—I admire a good prompt as much as the next library goblin.

For those of you seeking a guide to the guides, here’s a list of the year’s most popular reading challenges. Athletic prowess may vary, so I’ve taken the liberty of ranking by (brain) weight class.

Featherbrain:
StoryGraph Genre Challenge

The stalwart StoryGraph is an independent book tracking platform that’s been quietly coming for Goodreads’ corner of the sky. The site allows users to design, develop and host their own challenges. The best one for chill readers looks to be the Genre Challenge.

The ten prompts in this challenge are broad enough to cover a big tent. You can pick up a “translated classic,” a new release, or a philosophy book to make your bingo card. Plus, ten is reasonable. I believe you personally can beat the odds and read ten books.

Lightbrain:
Popsugar Reading Challenge

This challenge considers itself akin to a “virtual book club,” which is very sweet. Also, it’s themed! The name of the game this year is gardens. As in, growth.

The Popsugar challenge has the benefit of pliability. There are 40 regular prompts, plus an additional ten for the “advanced” reader. I appreciate the commitment to whimsy. (See: “A book that makes you want to travel to Italy” or “A book with any type of fruit on the cover or in the title.”) This challenge makes a race look more like a stroll.

Welterbrain:
Book Riot’s 2026 Read Harder Challenge

Now in its 12th year, this challenge has the benefit of being time-tested. Its relatively modest 26 prompts ask readers to expand their stacks into new genres. (Always a good thing.)

The Book Riot architects also place a premium on diverse writers, via prompts to read work by intersex, deaf, and/or African authors. But I also love the prompts that invite readers to challenge assumptions around genre. Like my favorite pull from the list: “Read a nonviolent true crime book.”

Heavybrain:
The 52 Book Challenge

As you can likely infer, the 52 Book Challenge is all about quantity. You sign up for this bad boy, you’re gunning for at least a book a week.

Individual prompts can be vague on this list—see: “provokes strong emotion” or “requires suspension of disbelief”—but that’s not necessarily bad for a numbers game. There’s also a pleasant puzzly quality that can reward the type of math head reader who also loves a scavenger hunt. (See: “[a book set] in the 800s of the Dewey Decimal system” or “[a book by] two or more authors, with one pseudonym.”)

Craving some personal coaching? Chances are, your local library has a challenge of its own—and one complete with an IRL accountability group. San Luis Obispo residents, for instance, can work off an actual bingo card. Springfield readers on a time crunch can join the city’s month long winter break challenge via this handy list.

Readers in Upper Michigan can turn reviews into prizes. And if you’re close to the Fargo Public Library you can join one of two ongoing challenges for adults.

If you’re looking for the like-minded? Identity-based challenges abound on Storygraph. My personal favorite remains the Free Black Women’s Library Reading Challenge.

Godspeed and read.

Sure, everyone from Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos to Prince Harry and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have been frolicking in the snow — or lack thereof — in Aspen in recent weeks, but other boldfaces are looking beyond the usual winter destinations in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Switzerland.

New — and newly invigorated — ski resorts near and far are attracting power players and celebs with fresh powder and fresh perks, from luxury clubs, private mountains and Michelin-starred chefs.

Have a look.

Denali National Park, Alaska

Perched high above Denali and accessible only by helicopter, Sheldon Chalet was recently named to Condé Nast Traveller’s 2026 Gold List. Courtesy of Sheldon Chalet

Key players: In 2019, Julia Roberts reportedly took husband Danny Moder to this ultra-isolated resort to celebrate his 50th birthday. Reachable only by helicopter, it sits in the shadow of Mount McKinley, North America’s tallest peak and previously known as Denali, on a 33-acre nunatak deep inside a national park.

“There is no other way to experience the mountain unless you’re willing to pitch a tent, eat freeze-dried food, and survive the elements,” owner Marne Sheldon told NYNext. “So we put you in a beautiful 2,000 square-foot chalet, with a chef preparing gourmet meals, warm and fluffy down beds — all the features that you would find at any ski resort, and then some, in the the most gorgeous place on all of Earth.”

The land itself is part of the legend: Sheldon’s father-in-law, Don Sheldon, a bush pilot and surveyor, claimed the site under the Homestead Act decades before Alaska achieved statehood and the area became a national park.

Built to realize Don’s vision of a true refuge at the edge of the world, the chalet spares no comfort. The two-story, hexagonal lodge hosts just five bedrooms (10 guests max), a rooftop sauna and a kitchen run by Neil Young’s former personal chef. Every stay is a complete buy-out, with nights priced at $32,000.

Two resident mountain guides tailor every stay — from heli-skiing and glacier trekking to fly-fishing — and few places on earth offer a better seat for the aurora borealis.

From crab legs to barbecued oysters, every guest at Sheldon Chalet receives a bespoke menu tailored to their cravings — cooked by Neil Young’s former chef. All ingredients are delivered to the mountaintop by helicopter. Courtesy of Sheldon Chalet

Fljót Valley, Iceland

Skiing at Eleven Deplar Farm means helicoptering into untouched Arctic terrain — endless powder lines, ocean views and zero lift lines. Courtesy of Iceland Deplar Farm

Key players: Former Blackstone real estate executive Chad Pike opened this remote spot in 2016 — it’s one of eight lodges around the world operated by his Eleven Experience, a luxury adventure travel company. In May 2025, Justin Bieber reportedly spent a week here recording music and enjoying the stunning scenery.

Set near the Arctic Circle on a former sheep farm, Eleven Deplar offers extreme terrain without even a semblance of crowd. Guests are ferried by helicopter to untouched runs — vast snowfields stretching all the way to icy Atlantic waters. The ski season lasts well into June, at which point the sun doesn’t set much before midnight.

Adventurers can also opt to go snowmobiling or try Arctic-surfing. Ultra-thick wetsuits are available on-site.

The luxurious inn features just 13 guest rooms, one restaurant and a geothermal spa.

Given the terrain, the resort is probably best suited for expert skiers who don’t mind a bit of a drive. The outpost takes four-hours to reach by car from Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital, or two-and-a-half from Akureyri, a regional airport.

Most winter weeks are booked up years in advance.

“It seems every day is going to be the best day ever, even on days we thought we knew what to expect,” one reviewer wrote.

Hokkaido, Japan

In Niseko, Seasons Collection delivers total privacy with front-row access to the Annupuri mountain. Seasons Collection Niseko

Key players: Japan’s ski scene is booming. Niseko, a mountain town on the country’s idyllic northern island, has drawn comparisons to Aspen and St. Moritz and attracted celebs such as Hugh Jackman and Sam Neil, as well as developers such as Malaysian billionaire Francis Yeoh and Charlerm Yoovidhya, the Thai billionaire and co-owner of Red Bull GmbH.

While there are a growing number of upscale hotels, the six-star Seasons Collection Niseko on the quiet side of Mount Niseko-Annupuri stands apart.

To reach the one-of-one private estate, you ski through the trees on the little-known Seasons Chairman’s Run. You can’t miss the multi-level villa, and you shouldn’t miss its in-house Michelin-starred chef.

The lodge, which appeared in Netflix’s “The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals,” also boasts a home theater, indoor heated swimming pool and 1,000-bottle wine cellar.

“With [all that], you might not want to hit the slopes,” one reviewer wrote.

At Seasons Collection Niseko, dining is handled in-house, with menus built around Hokkaido’s local seafood, wagyu and seasonal produce. Seasons Collection Niseko

Windham, NY

Windham Mountain is still open to non-members, but paying up for admission to Windham Mountain Club opens access to first track runs and members-only lift lines — among other perks. Paul Martinka

Key players: Hospitality gurus Kemmons Wilson Jr. — heir to the Holiday Inn empire — and Sandy Beall — founder of Tennessee’s five-star Blackberry Farm — acquired the previously low-key ski area in 2023. They’ve spent $70 million transforming the once humble Catskills spot into a private, amenities-packed club.

Members pay $200,000 to join, plus $9,000 in annual dues, for early access to “first tracks” on the mountain, which had surprisingly good snow (for the East Coast) last season and this past December. While parts of the mountain are still open to the public, there are members-only lift lines, private locker rooms, valet service and exclusive dining options, including a steakhouse and 15-table sushi restaurant.

New boutique hotels like The Henson — which features a destination restaurant, Matilda, from the team behind trendy Wildair on NYC’s Lower East Side — add to the upscale vibe.

“Can we beat Vale or Aspen or Jackson on skiing? Probably not,” Beall told NYNext. “But, we’re running an elevated resort — we can beat them on food and beverage, on hospitality, on experience.”

Part of the offerings at Windham Mountain Club are access to two on-mountain dining options: a steakhouse and 15-table sushi restaurant. Courtesy of Windham Mountain Club

Dolomite Mountains, Italy

Rosa Alpina is seated squarely within the Dolomites’ Alta Badia region — a pristine alpine basin prized for immaculate grooming, sunlit pistes and seamless access to the Sella Ronda circuit. Courtesy of Aman Rosa Alpina

Key players: In years past, everyone from Tom Cruise to Prince Albert of Monaco have stayed at the storied Rosa Alpini, which dates back to the 1930s. This past summer, after a two-year, $69-million renovation designed by noted architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston, the historic hotel reopened as the Aman Rosa Alpina.

“This new chapter with Aman is something we approach with great pride, as it brings together our history with a shared vision for the future,” Hugo Pizzinini, the hotel’s managing director and co-owner, told Travel + Leisure.

Tucked in the quaint village of San Cassiano, the hotel is just a short walk from the Piz Sorega gondola and the adjacent mountain, elevation 6,565 feet. Skiing events in the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics will be taking place about an hour’s car ride away in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Some of original Rosa Aplini’s charms — such as the longtime piano player and the ski butler, who can help newcomers navigate the mountain’s terrain — remain. Aman did away with other features, including the former three-Michelin starred restaurant, Hubertus, in favor of a more relaxed grill, with standout items including cotaletta alla Milanese and Piemonte rib-eye steaks.

A refurbished spa boasts two outdoor infinity pools, a warm thermal bath and a lap pool. The hotel will arrange for helicopter transfer from the local airports if you don’t want to drive the twisting mountain roads.

Aman is built on the idea that true luxury is invisibility: discreet service, vast space and destinations that allow guests to disappear entirely. Rosa Alpina follows the philosophy to a T. Courtesy of Aman Rosa Alpina

Deer Valley’s Expanded Excellence program has redrawn the map: since December 2024, the resort has added 10 new lifts — more than doubling its footprint — and grown to 4,300 skiable acres across 202 runs. Courtesy of Deer Valley Resort

Key Players: The popular mountain has reportedly drawn visits from everyone from Taylor Swift and Gwen Stefani to the Kardashians — but in recent years, it’s perhaps been best known as the place of origin for an alleged accident that landed Gwyneth Paltrow in court.

Deer Valley previously ranked as the 15th largest ski resort in the nation with over 2,000 skiable acres, but, in the past year, it has added ten new lifts and more than doubled in size. The outgrowth, dubbed “Expanded Excellence,” brings the mountain to 31 lifts, 202 runs and 4,300 skiable acres.

Lodging expansion lags behind mountain expansion, so this winter might be one of the least crowded in Deer Valley’s history. Come 2026-27, the current five-star options — Montage Deer Valley and Stein Eriksen Lodge — will be joined by a Four Seasons, which is currently under construction.

Despite all the changes, at least three of the resort’s hallmarks remain. Deer Valley still caps daily capacity to manage crowds, snowboarders are still banned and day lessons with an Olympian can still be had for about $3,000.

“This isn’t a reinvention,” President of Deer Valley Resort Todd Bennett told NYNext. “It’s an expansion of what has worked well — we’re continuing with that.”

Deer Valley has undergone a major transformation — but skiers can rest assured, snowboarding is still strictly prohibited. Courtesy of Deer Valley Resort

This story is part of NYNext, an indispensable insider insight into the innovations, moonshots and political chess moves that matter most to NYC’s power players (and those who aspire to be).

Wolf Creek, Utah

Reed Hastings’ vision for Powder Haven is a deliberate antidote to mega-pass skiing — fewer people, more space and a semi-private model designed to preserve powder. Courtesy of Powder Mountain

Key players: Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings acquired Powder Mountain in 2023 and started developing this $300 million semi-private housing community on it shortly thereafter.

While public skiers can still use much of the mountain, owning a Powder Haven home — prices begin at around $2.5 million — unlocks access to exclusive lifts and uncrowded, un-groomed lines reserved for members.

This winter marks the first operational season of the mountain’s private side with the debut of the Primetime lift. It’s opened roughly 1,200 acres of north-facing powder in the mountain’s newly expanded Davenport territory.

That’s just the beginning. Two more private lifts are set to open in the coming years, and a 73,000-square-foot members-only summit clubhouse with an in-house gym, omakase, heated outdoor pool and pickleball courts is currently under construction.

With so much to offer, it’s no surprise that Hastings sold nearly all 39 build-ready lots before a single road was paved. Thirty-four additional custom homesites are now available, with average listing prices around $4 million.

“The demand has been tremendous,” he told Robb Report.

At Powder Haven, select homes are designed with dedicated ski lockers and gear rooms, allowing owners to step from boot room to fresh tracks without ever touching a base lodge. Courtesy of Powder Mountain

The New York Post may receive revenue from affiliate/advertising partnerships for sharing this content and/or if you click or make a purchase.

Bitcoin Hyper is one of the latest speculative tokens drawing attention before it even hits the open market.

The project’s pitch is simple: give people a faster, cheaper way to move value that’s tied to Bitcoin, without actually being Bitcoin itself. That distinction is key. Despite the name, Bitcoin Hyper has no official connection to Bitcoin’s developers or core network.

“You need to understand what you are buying. This is not Bitcoin, but a tracking token for Bitcoin,” Wesley Crook, chief executive of FP Block, a blockchain engineering firm, told The Post.

Instead, Bitcoin Hyper is meant to operate alongside Bitcoin’s blockchain, acting as a kind of proxy for Bitcoin in everyday transactions. The idea is that holders could use Hyper to send and receive value more quickly and at lower cost than using Bitcoin directly.

“Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency with secure decentralization, liquidity and adoption,” Mitchell DeRaimondo, founder of SteelWave Digital, a tokenization management firm, told The Post.

“Bitcoin Hyper is a spin-off project designed to combat the limitations of the original, prioritizing speed, scalability and expanded utility.”

Below, we break down what Bitcoin Hyper is, how the presale works and how to use a secure wallet like Best Wallet to navigate the process.

Bitcoin is the strongest foundation in crypto — but it wasn’t built to scale beyond transfers and custody. Bitcoin Hyper

Bitcoin Hyper is a new token designed to sit on top of, and alongside, Bitcoin’s ecosystem.

Rather than replacing Bitcoin, it’s marketed as a way to work around some of Bitcoin’s pain points. As Bitcoin has become more popular, its network has slowed and transaction fees have climbed.

That can make sending smaller amounts of Bitcoin feel clunky and expensive.

Bitcoin Hyper’s solution is to act as a transactional stand-in. The project’s pitch is that investors who hold Bitcoin could use Hyper to move value more quickly and cheaply, while still being exposed to Bitcoin’s broader trend.

That comes with a big caveat: Bitcoin Hyper is not Bitcoin. It doesn’t share Bitcoin’s history, decentralization or brand recognition, and there’s no guarantee its price will move in lockstep with Bitcoin.

“You are buying a very speculative token that will need the solution to work and gain traction within a fairly crowded space,” Crook said.

Bitcoin’s recent surge has helped fuel interest. The world’s biggest cryptocurrency has climbed more than 30% this year, topping $120,000, and some crypto believers – including the billionaire Winklevoss twins, who co-founded crypto exchange Gemini – have argued it could eventually reach $1 million.

Bitcoin Hyper is essentially a bet that this momentum continues, and that demand for Bitcoin-related projects stays strong.

Bitcoin Hyper is just the latest token to take off – and it hasn’t even officially launched yet. REUTERS

Like most presale tokens, Bitcoin Hyper is a high-risk, high-upside bet.

If the project launches smoothly, gains real-world traction and benefits from ongoing Bitcoin enthusiasm, early buyers could see meaningful gains.

“The upside is the low-cost entry point, which, if it’s successful, would mean investors could see huge gains,” DeRaimondo told The Post.

At the same time, Bitcoin Hyper does not yet have the security track record, liquidity or credibility of Bitcoin itself. Presales can fail to launch, run into technical issues or simply fade out if there isn’t enough demand after the hype wears off.

“The downside is that it can’t yet compare to the security and credibility of Bitcoin, so there is a much greater risk,” DeRaimondo added.

Bitcoin Hyper’s long-term fate will depend on how well the team executes the rollout and whether users actually adopt it as a faster way to move Bitcoin-related value.

“The project’s success depends on execution because it will determine if it becomes a viable alternative to Bitcoin or remains a temporary addition to its history,” Patrick Gruhn, founder of Perpetuals.com, a crypto derivatives trading startup, told The Post.

If you’re interested in Bitcoin Hyper, treat it as a speculative position within a broader portfolio, not a core holding.

 Are You Crypto Curious?

Best Wallet

Download a trusted crypto wallet — Since Bitcoin Hyper isn’t listed on major exchanges yet, you’ll need a Web3-compatible wallet. We recommend starting with the Best Wallet app, available for both iOS and Android.

Create and verify your account — Sign up with your email, Google, or Apple ID. For added security, verify your identity with a government-issued ID and enable two-factor authentication (2FA).

Fund your wallet — Load your wallet with ETH or USDT, which are the most common tokens used to buy into presales. Best Wallet makes it easy to deposit crypto directly or transfer from another account.

Join the Bitcoin Hyper presale — Visit the official presale site (bitcoinhyper.com) and connect your Best Wallet. Choose how many Bitcoin Hyper tokens you want to buy and confirm your transaction.

Claim and store your tokens — After the Token Generation Event, you’ll be able to claim your Bitcoin Hyper tokens. Keep them in Best Wallet for easy access, or move them to a cold wallet for long-term protection

Right now, Bitcoin Hyper is only available through its presale. You can’t buy it on major exchanges yet, so you’ll need a Web3-compatible wallet that can connect to the official presale site.

That’s where Best Wallet comes in. It’s a non-custodial, multi-chain crypto wallet with a built-in presale interface and scam filters designed to help users navigate new and speculative tokens more safely.

“It is a multi-step process that might function as a barrier to many would-be investors,” Kadan Stadelmann, chief technology officer at Komodo Platform, a blockchain and crypto platform, told The Post.

For Bitcoin Hyper, observability is one of the most important theoretical design pillars.

Buying into presales can expose you to fake websites, copycat tokens and phishing attempts. Using a secure, feature-rich wallet can help reduce those risks.

Best Wallet’s Bitcoin and crypto wallets are powered by Fireblocks, a leading digital asset security standard. Your money is secured with key-share technology, biometric authentication, secure account sign-ons and audited app security, making it an extremely secure hot wallet.

That security stack is paired with practical tools for presale buyers:

Built-in scam filter to help you avoid suspicious contracts and phishing links.

Portfolio tracker so you can monitor Bitcoin Hyper alongside the rest of your crypto.

Personal encrypted cloud backups that can help you recover your wallet if you lose access to your device or credentials.

A non-custodial wallet also gives you full control over your assets, which can be especially important when dealing with new tokens that aren’t yet supported by big, centralized exchanges.

The token is meant to serve as a proxy for Bitcoin in transactions. Reuters

Since Bitcoin Hyper is still in its presale stage, you won’t find it on mainstream platforms like Coinbase, Robinhood or Kraken.

For now, investors have two main routes:

The official Bitcoin Hyper presale site at bitcoinhyper.com

A secure Web3 wallet like Best Wallet that can connect directly to the presale

After launch, presale buyers are likely hoping Bitcoin Hyper secures listings on major centralized or decentralized exchanges, which would make it easier to trade. There is no guarantee that will happen, and timelines can shift, so presale buyers should be prepared to hold their tokens in a self-custody wallet for a period of time.

Bitcoin Hyper could rise if demand follows through, but it could also go nowhere. Bitcoin Hyper

Bitcoin Hyper is marketed as a faster, cheaper way to move Bitcoin-related value, but it remains a brand-new token that is still in its presale phase.

There is real upside if the project launches smoothly, gains adoption and benefits from Bitcoin’s broader popularity. There is also real downside if it struggles to build demand, stumbles at launch or simply gets overshadowed by competing projects.

Plenty of crypto projects never get beyond their debut, or fade after an early spike in attention. That’s why a secure wallet like Best Wallet is an important starting point: it helps you filter out scams, keep track of what you own and recover your assets if something goes wrong on your end.

Bitcoin Hyper could rise if demand follows through, but it could also go nowhere. As with any speculative presale, only invest what you can afford to lose, take time to understand the project and use the right tools to protect yourself along the way.

Many predict that the artificial intelligence boom will dramatically change how people live and work, and the scale and pace of recent AI deals seems to reflect this. At the center are a handful of companies that are increasingly turning to each other to finance and build out the necessary infrastructure.

ChatGPT-maker OpenAI alone has racked up around $1 trillion in deals this year, according to a report from the Financial Times. In September, OpenAI confirmed that it would pay Oracle $300 billion for computer infrastructure over the course of five years. This deal is part of a $500 billion data center buildout project called Stargate, to which Japan’s SoftBank Group is also contributing. OpenAI has also inked a $22 billion deal with CoreWeave for use of its data centers, which are packed with Nvidia graphics processing units. Most recently, OpenAI announced a partnership with Broadcom to develop and deploy racks of chips designed by the AI startup. That deal amount is undisclosed. OpenAI has been able to go on this shopping spree because of a $100 billion investment from Nvidia, though a large portion of that money likely be used for leasing Nvidia’s GPUs. Microsoft has also invested about $14 billion in OpenAI since 2019.

Nvidia has also spun a similar web of intertwining AI deals. Nvidia in September agreed to pay up to $6.3 billion for any of CoreWeave’s unsold cloud-computing capacity through 2032. CoreWeave gets most of its GPUs that it then rents out to customers from Nvidia, which is also an investor in the AI cloud infrastructure company. Meanwhile, Oracle has purchased about $40 billion worth of Nvidia chips to build a data center for OpenAI, which is part of the Stargate project. Softbank has a $3 billion stake in Nvidia.

Some experts are worried that these inflated AI company valuations “are at a bubble.” A recent report by Bain & Company found that AI companies will need $2 trillion of annual revenue to fund the infrastructure needed to meet projected demand for AI by 2030. That’s an $800 billion shortfall.

But AI leaders are pushing back against concerns, saying that this is simply what it takes to make AI a reality.

“The largest tech companies in the world are purchasing this infrastructure because they have demand,” CoreWeave CEO Mike Intrator said on Mad Money on Oct. 8. “There’s nothing circular about that. It’s a fundamental infrastructure buildout that’s taking place, and when you have such a massive-scale investment in infrastructure, it is not unusual to see partnerships as people try to serve infrastructure to the consumer. It happens in other markets, it’s happening in this one.”

Watch the video for a visual representation of this entangled web of AI deals.

A version of this article first appeared in CNBC’s Inside Wealth newsletter with Robert Frank, a weekly guide to the high-net-worth investor and consumer. Sign up to receive future editions, straight to your inbox.

A leading advisory group to the wealth management industry has launched a crowdsourced list of wealth terms it hopes will reduce confusion and marketing hype.

The Ultra High Net Worth Institute, a nonprofit focused on improving services to wealthy families and investors, recently unveiled its “Wealthesaurus” — a list of over 80 terms commonly used and abused in the wealth management business. The list, which will be continually updated and expanded based on input from wealthy investors and advisors, aims to define the new language of wealth management and create accepted standards for communicating with clients.

“There are a lot of garbage terms, a lot of marketing terms being tossed around,” said Jim Grubman, content and curriculum chair at the Ultra High Net Worth Institute and the founder of Family Wealth Consulting. “The motivation on a lot of this is to counteract some of the BS in the field.”

The need for a credible wealth Wikipedia follows an explosion of gimmicks, false labels and misleading hype in the business of managing the fortunes of the wealthy.

In 2024, households worth $5 million or more controlled an estimated $49 trillion in financial wealth, more than half of the nation’s total, according to Cerulli Associates. With assets growing fastest at the top of the wealth ladder, the competition for ultra-wealthy investors and family offices has grown fierce among private banks, wirehouses, registered investment advisors, private equity firms and boutiques. With that growth has come a barrage of inflated brand language.

Terms like “family office services,” “holistic advice” and “assets under advisement” are used indiscriminately, making it harder than ever for clients to navigate an industry already impenetrable for nonfinancial experts.

One of the most egregious violations is the term “multifamily office.” Traditionally, a multifamily office is a single family office that’s expanded to serve a small number of outside families or family members. Today, dozens of RIAs, boutique managers and even large advisory firms call themselves multifamily offices, trading off the exclusivity and bespoke services implied by a true family office.

“Some industry observers believe the term has no established basis and should never be used,” according to the Wealthesaurus entry for multifamily office. “Most professionals simply recognize that the term has had growing recognition over the past thirty years, even if there is inadequate validity or consistency in its use.”

Get Inside Wealth directly to your inbox

To comply with the Wealthesaurus definition, multifamily offices need four specific attributes, from certain clients (at least 10 complex, multigenerational families with a median net worth of at least $30 million) to specific services, service delivery (no conflicts of interest) and experience.

Another contentious term is “assets under advisement.” Firms often toss around asset terms to appear to manage more client money than they actually do. Some firms use “assets under management (AUM),” while others say “assets under advisement (AUA)” and others tout “assets under administration (AUAdmin).” Clients rarely know the difference.

The Wealthesaurus gives highly specific definitions of each, with the focus for assets under advisement being firms that serve as fiduciaries (another debated term). It says clients should ask wealth managers specifically how they break out assets under management and assets under advisement.

“Some firms include AUM in their calculation of AUA without making it clear they are doing so, while others report AUM and AUA separately,” according to the Wealthesaurus. “To address this problem if these amounts are being evaluated, firms should be asked to explain how they calculate their AUA.”

Grubman said the idea for the Wealthesaurus started with an unexpected problem at the Ultra High Net Worth Institute. The Institute was founded in 2019 by Steve Prostano, a longtime advisory to wealthy families and private business owners, who felt that clients needed unbiased help understanding and navigating the industry. The Institute, which counts the leaders of dozens of top wealth management firms, advisory firms and specialists on its boards, also aims to promote best practices and standards in the industry.

Two years ago, the Institute started developing what it calls the Integrated Family Wealth Management Initiative, looking at the sweeping changes in the industry in recent years and how it could better serve clients. The group’s discussions hit a problem: They often couldn’t agree on certain words.

“We would use a term and someone would say ‘Um, actually I think it’s this,'” Grubman said. “And someone else would say ‘I remember from 15 years ago it was defined like that.’ It was amazing the differences people had, even around words like family enterprise.”

Grubman and Tara Kehoe, the Institute’s library manager, started compiling an internal glossary and crowdsourced definitions with members of the group. Over time, the list grew and they decided to create a public version to better help clients and firms.

They considered calling it Wealthipedia, but the name was taken so they arrived at Wealthesaurus and added a dinosaur mascot. Grubman said the Institute welcomes suggested terms and definitions from other wealth management experts and clients in hopes of expanding its use. Kehoe said engagement has been high — with new users spending an average of over seven minutes on the recently launched site.

“They’re clicking from term to term and really using the resource,” Kehoe said.

The site doesn’t aspire to be a comprehensive guide to all wealth management terms. There are no explainers on GRATS, or FLiPs or SCINS from the estate planning world, or SMAs and PPVAs in investing, or the myriad other products that make wealthy investors’ heads spin. Grubman said the Institute didn’t want to include products or terms that investors could easily look up on the web. For those kinds of product terms, the Wealthesaurus website includes links to a variety of online investing guides, including the Charles Schwab Investing Glossary and Investopedia and the SEC Glossary.

“We looked for terms that were important to the field, or where the other definitions out there were so full of jargon,” Grubman said. “Wading through the definition of assets under advisement on the SEC website is a nightmare, for instance. So we wanted to create this for clients.”

As the business of advising wealthy families increasingly cuts across industries — from trust and estate planners to accountants, real estate advisors, philanthropy consultants, aviation and fleet experts, and even concierge doctors and other specialists — the Wealthesaurus can also be a bridge between disciplines.

The Wealthesaurus even has a defined term for “ultra high net worth,” a phrase used throughout the luxury and banking worlds with little context.

The Wealthesaurus says the most common definition of “high net worth” is a client with between $5 million and $30 million. “Ultra high net worth” typically means $30 million or more. It cautioned, however, that “with inflation and the significant expansion of global wealth since 2000, more firms are considering the modern threshold to the top UHNW level to be $100 million.”

The Biden administration issued sweeping rules on Monday governing how A.I. chips and models can be shared with foreign countries, in an attempt to set up a global framework that will guide how artificial intelligence spreads around the world in the years to come.

With the power of A.I. rapidly growing, the Biden administration said the rules were necessary to keep a transformational technology under the control of the United States and its allies, and out of the hands of adversaries that could use it to augment their militaries, carry out cyberattacks and otherwise threaten the United States.

Tech companies have protested the new rules, saying they threaten their sales and the future prospects of the American tech industry.

The rules put various limitations on the number of A.I. chips that companies can send to different countries, essentially dividing the world into three categories. The United States and 18 of its closest partners — including Britain, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan — are exempted from any restrictions and can buy A.I. chips freely.

Countries that are already subject to U.S. arms embargoes, like China and Russia, will continue to face a previously existing ban on A.I. chip purchases.

All other nations — most of the world — will be subject to caps restricting the number of A.I. chips that can be imported, though countries and companies are able to increase that number by entering into special agreements with the U.S. government. The rules could rankle some foreign governments: Even countries that are close trading partners or military allies of the United States, such as Mexico, Switzerland, Poland or Israel, will face restrictions on their ability to purchase larger amounts of American A.I. products.

In a statement, the European Commission said on Monday that it had shared its concerns about the measures with the Biden administration.

“We are concerned about the U.S. measures adopted today restricting access to advanced A.I. chip exports for selected E.U. member states and their companies,” the commission said, adding that European countries are “an economic opportunity for the U.S., not a security risk.”

The rules are aimed at stopping China from obtaining from other countries the technology it needs to produce artificial intelligence, after the United States banned such sales to China in recent years.

But the regulations also have broader goals: having allied countries be the location of choice for companies to build the world’s biggest data centers, in an effort to keep the most advanced A.I. models within the borders of the United States and its partners.

Governments around the world, particularly in the Middle East, have been pumping money into attracting and building enormous data centers, in a bid to become the next center for A.I. development.

Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s national security adviser, told reporters on Sunday that the rule would ensure that the infrastructure for training the most advanced artificial intelligence would be in the United States or in the jurisdiction of close allies, and “that capacity does not get offshored like chips and batteries and other industries that we’ve had to invest hundreds of billion dollars to bring back onshore.”

Mr. Sullivan said the rule would provide “greater clarity to our international partners and to industry,” while countering national security threats from malicious actors that could use “American technologies against us.”

It will be up to the Trump administration to decide whether to keep the new rules or how to enforce them. In a call with reporters on Sunday, Biden administration officials said that the rules had bipartisan support and that they had been in consultations with the incoming administration about them.

Though companies in China have begun to develop their own A.I. chips, the global market for such semiconductors is dominated by U.S. companies, particularly Nvidia. That dominance has given the U.S. government the ability to regulate the flow of A.I. technology worldwide, by restricting U.S. company exports.

Companies have protested those limitations, saying the restrictions could hamper innocuous or even beneficial types of computing, anger U.S. allies and ultimately push global buyers into buying non-American products, like those made by China.

In a statement, Ned Finkle, Nvidia’s vice president for government affairs, called the rule “unprecedented and misguided” and said it “threatens to derail innovation and economic growth worldwide.”

“Rather than mitigate any threat, the new Biden rules would only weaken America’s global competitiveness, undermining the innovation that has kept the U.S. ahead,” he said. Nvidia’s stock dipped nearly 2 percent on Monday.

Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft, said in a statement that the company was confident it could “comply fully with this rule’s high security standards and meet the technology needs of countries and customers around the world that rely on us.”

In a letter to congressional leadership on Sunday that was viewed by The New York Times, Jason Oxman, the president of the Information Technology Industry Council, a group representing tech companies, asked Congress to step in and use its authority to overturn the action if the Trump administration did not.

John Neuffer, the president of the Semiconductor Industry Association, said his group was “deeply disappointed that a policy shift of this magnitude and impact is being rushed out the door days before a presidential transition and without any meaningful input from industry.”

“The stakes are high, and the timing is fraught,” Mr. Neuffer added.

China’s Ministry of Commerce said on Monday that it opposed the restrictions, calling them an expansion of Washington’s “long-arm jurisdiction.” It said it would “take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”

The rules, which run more than 200 pages, also set up a system in which companies that operate data centers, like Microsoft and Google, can apply for special government accreditations.

In return for following certain security standards, these companies can then trade in A.I. chips more freely around the globe. The companies will still have to agree to keep 75 percent of their total A.I. computing power within the United States or allied countries, and to locate no more than 7 percent of their computing power in any single other nation.

The rules also set up the first controls on weights for A.I. models, the parameters unique to each model that determine how artificial intelligence makes its predictions. Companies setting up data centers abroad will be required to adopt security standards to protect this intellectual property and prevent adversaries from gaining access to it.

Governments facing restrictions can raise the number of A.I. chips they can import freely by signing agreements with the U.S. government, in which they would agree to align with U.S. goals for protecting A.I.

Under the guidance of the U.S. government, Microsoft struck an agreement to team up with an Emirati firm, G42, last year, in return for G42’s eliminating Huawei equipment from its systems and taking other steps.

The Biden administration could issue more rules related to chips and A.I. in the coming days, including an executive order to encourage domestic energy generation for data centers, and new rules that aim to keep the most cutting-edge chips out of China, people familiar with the deliberations said.

The latter rule is a response to an incident last year in which U.S. officials discovered that Huawei, a Chinese telecom firm under U.S. sanctions, had been obtaining components for its A.I. chips that were manufactured by a leading Taiwanese chip firm, in violation of U.S. export controls.

The announcements are among a flurry of new regulations that the Biden administration is rushing to issue before the presidential turnover as it tries to close loopholes and cement its legacy on countering China’s technological development. The administration has issued new limits on exports of chip-making equipment to China and other countries, proposed new restrictions on Chinese drones, added new Chinese companies to a military blacklist and hurried to complete new subsidies for U.S. chip manufacturing.

But the A.I. regulations issued Monday appear to be among the most sweeping and consequential of these actions. Artificial intelligence is quickly transforming how scientists carry out research, how companies allocate tasks between their employees and how militaries operate. While A.I. has many beneficial uses, U.S. officials have grown more concerned that it could enable the development of new weapons, help countries surveil dissidents and otherwise upend the global balance of power.

Jimmy Goodrich, a senior adviser for technology analysis at the RAND Corporation, said the rules would create a framework for protecting U.S. security interests while still allowing firms to compete abroad. “They are also forward-looking, trying to preserve U.S. and allied-led supply chains before they are offshored to the highest subsidy bidder,” he said.

Traveling through Italy, I used ChatGPT as a tour guide for the moments where my mom and I wandered into interesting little corners, alleys and buildings where our curiosity was piqued with no tour guide around.

Salvador Rodriguez/CNBC

As I stood with my mom under the blistering sun in Rome waiting for our audio tour of the Pantheon to begin, I decided to kill some time with ChatGPT.

“Tell me about the Pantheon in Rome,” I said.

The AI tool returned a bunch of information in bullet points that was helpful but hardly made for an interesting read. So I tweaked my prompt and gave ChatGPT a bit more info.

“Pretend you’re a tour guide and tell that to me in a more interesting fashion,” I wrote.

My mom and I were in the midst of an epic seven-city trip in August to celebrate her 60th birthday. She had no idea that I was bringing along a digital companion.

“Welcome, Chef, to one of Rome’s most extraordinary treasures—The Pantheon,” the AI tool responded. (I asked ChatGPT to refer to me as Chef several months earlier to make the banter more entertaining.)

“As we stand here in front of this architectural marvel, let me take you on a journey back in time, where gods, emperors, and artists all intersect in this sacred space,” the chatbot wrote.

Since its launch in November 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has revolutionized the field of artificial intelligence, along the way lifting the company’s valuation to an eye-popping $157 billion. AI startups have raised $111 billion in funding since the start of 2023, according to Crunchbase, and big tech companies have bought millions of Nvidia’s processors to train AI models. The generative AI market is predicted to surpass $1 trillion in revenue within a decade.

Yet, for many everyday internet users, figuring out what to even do with ChatGPT can be quite perplexing.

I use ChatGPT quite a bit. Almost weekly, I give it a list of five movies I want to watch and force it to pick one for me. I recently had it draw up a contract, and I’ve asked it to summarize long articles.

But my favorite ChatGPT use case so far has been as a tour guide in Italy.

“When you enter, look up,” the chatbot wrote, as we began our Pantheon visit. “That dome, Chef, is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, and it’s been like that for almost two millennia.”

ChatGPT’s 400-word write up was absolutely on par with the audio tour we had purchased, though the headset version did include our tickets for entrance.

Elsewhere on our trip, ChatGPT told us that the central figure of the Trevi Fountain was Neptune riding a chariot pulled by sea horses, and explained why Rome’s Stadio Olimpico still maintained a monument for Benito Mussolini.

“This particular monument has remained, partly because it is seen as a historical artifact,” the chatbot said.

ChatGPT explained to us about why truffles were such a common ingredient in Florence’s cuisine and how Austrian Archduke Maximilian I served as viceroy of Lombardy-Venetia in Milan before later being installed as emperor of Mexico by Napoleon III.

Acting as a tour guide in Rome, ChatGPT pointed out Michelangelo’s Christ the Redeemer at the Santa Maria sopra Minerva church in Rome.

Salvador Rodriguez/CNBC

We still need tour guides. For now

If you’re worried about the future of the human tour guide industry, rest assured that we used plenty of them across Italy.

In Vatican City, our tour guide, Amy, did an excellent job cutting the enormous line to get through security and into the Holy City. She showed us the art throughout the Vatican and prepared us to see the Sistine Chapel.

She also did what technology never could — she spun the Sfera con Sfera art structure in the Vatican’s Courtyard of the Pinecone. Spinning the enormous bronze sphere is a privilege reserved for the Vatican’s trusted tour guides.

My mom and I were grateful for the guide who showed us the spot where Julius Caesar was cremated in Rome, and for the one who led a boat tour of the five towns of Cinque Terre. Human guides also led us through the vineyards in Tuscany, a hidden courtyard in Venice, where the climactic scene of “Casino Royale” was filmed, and George Clooney’s villa in Lake Como.

But there were numerous moments when we wandered into interesting little corners, alleys and buildings and were able to satisfy our curiosity by turning to ChatGPT.

Perhaps the best example came when we left the Pantheon and walked across the piazza into Santa Maria sopra Minerva. The church was free to enter but we knew very little about it. So I asked ChatGPT.

“Tucked away just behind the Pantheon, this is one of the few Gothic churches in Rome, and it’s filled with treasures that tell the story of a city where the ancient and the sacred come together,” the chatbot wrote.

Among those treasures was a sculpture near the church’s altar.

“To your left, you’ll find one of the church’s most famous artworks — Michelangelo’s Christ the Redeemer,” ChatGPT said. “This stunning statue shows Christ holding the cross, with a gentle, almost serene expression. It’s a powerful work that captures both the humanity and divinity of Christ, and it’s remarkable to think that it was sculpted by the same hands that created the Sistine Chapel.”

A week later, my mom and I would have to fight off other tourists just to get a clean photo of Michelangelo’s David in Florence. But at the church in Rome, we were alone, with our friendly chatbot, at a historical statue created by the same artist.
