Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more.

The Trailer for Remarkably Bright Creatures Has Dropped

At first, I thought the deep voice narrating the trailer for Remarkably Bright Creatures was just the generic Hollywood narrator guy. But as the trailer continued, I realized that it actually belonged to Marcellus, the giant Pacific octopus at the center of the story. He seems to have a vested interest in the lady who cleans his tank finding her son, who disappeared years ago. Since its 2022 release, the book the movie was adapted from has gone mega platinum. It currently has more than 1 million ratings on Goodreads, and was on everyone’s bestselling list forever, so I suppose it’s no surprise it got an adaptation—starring Sally Field, no less—so quickly.

The general vibe of the trailer is very heartwarming and ultimately feel-good, which makes its Mother’s Day weekend release on Netflix (May 8) understandable.

Paramount Launches New Imprint

Three years after selling Simon & Schuster, Paramount is back to books. They’re set to launch Paramount Global Publishing this year, which will incorporate Paramount’s intellectual property into new stories that will appear in print, audio, and digital formats, and stretch across genres and age demographics. It’s interesting, after what has seemed like a cool whole decade of Hollywood rehashing IP after IP, things are heading back to (somewhat) original stories. Sure, it sounds like Paramount wants to add on to already existing characters and worlds, but at the very least, we’ll hopefully be getting expansions of worlds rather than more tired remakes.

A List of Black Book Festivals Throughout the Country

Sisters from AARP has published a list of Black Book Festivals happening throughout the country this year, and all I have to say is nobody told me nothing! I’m kidding, but only a little. It’s nice to be able to look at everything in one place. The dates start as early as April 25 and run until the fall, with locations in the South, the West, the Midwest, and the Northeast.

The Best Historical Fiction Books of the Century So Far

The best historical fiction books of the century so far take us from ancient Greece to the Joseon dynasty in Korea to the Six-Day War in Palestine to 1980s NASA astronaut training. Historical fiction continues to be biased towards recent events, but we are getting to see more of history around the world than we did just a few decades ago.

Italian gun manufacturer Beretta is launching a proxy fight to take control of Sturm, Ruger and Co., America’s largest firearms maker, sources familiar with the matter have told The Post.

Insiders said the 500-year-old European firm, which has built a 10% stake in Hartford, Conn.-based Ruger, wants to nominate four executives to join the nine-member board — a move designed to gain more control over the main US rival to Smith & Wesson.

Sources said the nominees included William Franklin Detwiler, managing partner of Fernbrook Capital Management; Mark DeYoung, the founding CEO of Vista Outdoor; Frederick Disanto, CEO of Ancora Holdings; and Michael Christodolou, the founder of Inwood Capital Management.

Ruger’s sales and share price have dropped in recent years. It is the major rival to US firm Smith & Wesson Bloomberg via Getty Images

A proxy fight is an unfriendly contest for control of a company in which a group of shareholders tries to convince other investors to vote out the current board of directors or management.

Any vote would likely take place at Ruger’s annual general meeting scheduled for May 29.

The clash has erupted amid a sales slump and plunging profits at Ruger, with the price of its shares cratering by over 40% in the past four years.

As of Wednesday’s close, Ruger’s market cap hovered at $581 million.

When Beretta first revealed an initial 9% stake in an October filing, it said that it wanted to explore “potential areas of operational and strategic collaborations” with Ruger.

The US firm then adopted a one-year shareholder rights plan amid concerns about a growing ownership stake accumulated by the Italian giant.

A visitor tries out a display model Beretta assault rifle at the Fabbrica d’Armi Pietro Beretta S.p.A. booth during the Defence Service Asia Exhibition and Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. Bloomberg via Getty Images

Such plans — often called “poison pills” — aimed to make hostile takeovers more difficult by diluting the ownership of an acquiring investor that exceeds a specified threshold.

Beretta — an iconic gun manufacturer with ties to Italy’s Alpine region of Lombardy that was founded in 1526 — raked in $1.7 billion in revenue in 2024 and has been snapping up rivals like Switzerland’s RUAG Ammotec in 2022.

Pietro Gussalli Beretta, a 15th-generation heir to founder Bartolomeo Beretta, steers the company.

It has been seeking a greater presence in the US, which has the world’s largest legal firearms market, owing to the Second Amendment.

The Post has sought comment from Beretta and Ruger.

Wine makers are pulling the cork on California.

Another giant in the world-famous wine growing region is shutting down and slashing staff, making it the fourth since the start of 2026.

Jackson Family wines has stopped production at its Carneros Hill facility in Sonoma’s Carneros region, laying off more than a dozen employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice filed with California authorities on February 12.

Communications director Sean Carrol told the SF Chronicle that Carnero’s Hill – previously owned by Buena Vista Winery – “served as overflow production capacity and was not tied to any specific brand.”

The Jackson Family Wines confirmed the closure of the facility. Ilya S. Savenok

He added the site had “become underutilized,” allowing the company to consolidate.

Jackson Family Wines is known as one of the top US wine producers, the sixth largest wine company in the country.

It owns the Kendall-Jackson label and about 40 other brands, producing around six million cases a year, according to an industry review. More than 25 of those wineries are in the Golden State.

Last week, major winemaker Gallo announced the closure of a large production facility and the elimination of nearly 100 jobs across the wine growing region of Napa and Sonoma counties.

Considered the world’s largest winemaker by volume, Gallo filed a “warning” notice with the California Employment Development Department on Feb. 12, confirming it will permanently pull the cork on the Ranch Winery in St. Helena.

Jackson Family Wines owns the famed Kendall-Jackson label. Getty Images for NYCWFF

Gallo is also slashing staff at some of its other labels, including the Louis M. Martini Winery and the Orin Swift Tasting Room in St. Helena, as well as J Vineyards and Frei Ranch in Healdsburg.

“Gallo is aligning parts of our operations with our long‑term business strategy to ensure we remain well‑positioned for future success,” a spokesperson for the company told The Post.

“As part of this process, we made the difficult decision to reduce certain Wine Country operations. These changes are driven by market dynamics, evolving consumer demand, and available capacity across our wineries.”

Earlier this month, Foley Family Wines & Spirits shut down its production facility for the historic Central Coast winery Chalone.

Four major wine makers have announced closure of sites since the start of 2026. Neilson Barnard

In January, Constellation Brands notified more than 200 people at the Mission Bell Winery in Madera that they would be out of work. And Jean-Charles Boisset Collection closed two Napa Valley tasting rooms.

According to a recent report from Wine Business Monthly, there were 4,727 wineries in California in 2025. As of February 2026, there are 4,646.

The number of American adults who say they consume alcohol has fallen to 54%, according to an August 2025 Gallup poll.

Vornado Realty Trust’s PENN District transformation is poised to grow by another whole block.

The powerful REIT plans to create what a source called a “cohesive street-level experience” on both sides of Seventh Avenue between West 33rd and 34th streets, replacing what Vornado chairman Steve Roth recently called “junky retail.”

Vornado quietly bought up one parcel after another on the nondescript but heavily-trafficked block over the past few years. The next step, our sources said, will be demolishing the unattractive small buildings on the east side, to be followed by those on the west side. The few existing tenants are all on short-term leases.

One Penn Plaza Bloomberg via Getty Images

Roth tapped a crack leasing team headed by Newmark’s global retail chairman Mark Masinter to “repopulate,” as our source put it, the old stores with merchants appropriate for the reborn district anchored by Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. Vornado spent $2.5 billion to redevelop old office towers, launch the dining and shopping options inside the Moynihan Train Hall, and install a popular public plaza on West 33rd Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues.

The Newmark leasing team also includes Karen Bellantoni, Jackie Totolo, Pierce Thomspon and Nick Masinter.

The district is now home to more than 5 million square feet of prime office space, 300,000 square feet of public plazas and scores of eating and drinking venues, including huge new Avra inside the Moynihan building and Blue Ribbon Steak & Sushi. Vornado is also landlord to Primark, the international clothing merchant opening its US flagship at 150 W. 34th St.

The new Seventh Avenue storefronts — to be installed inside three-level “retail boxes” — will aim to sign actual stores, not restaurants or fast-food operations. Demolition of old structures is to start later this year with completion of the new spaces targeted for 2027.

Roth tipped the plan, although without details, in Vornado’s third-quarter earnings call in November. He pledged to replace “junky” retail on the avenue and to lead revitalization of the busy but “deteriorated” 34th Street/Seventh Avenue subway station.

Vornado chairman Steve Roth Bloomberg via Getty Images

Vornado EVP and co-head of real estate Glen Weiss said his company’s “transformative work is evident across all corners of the neighborhood. With Newmark, we will make the Penn District retail environment New York’s next big event.”

An even bigger event will be a new skyscraper to rise on the former Hotel Pennsylvania site. Vornado’s mum on plans but Roth told investors last fall he was in talks with a major tenant to anchor a 1,000 foot-tall tower.

The Big Apple’s retail world lost a true giant with the passing of C. Bradley Mendelson last week. “Brad,” as all knew him, was one of the premier dealmakers at CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield and Colliers International for over four decades.

C. Bradley Mendelson Cushman & Wakefield

Mendelson was a prime mover behind such epochal deals as the opening of Toys ‘R’ Us in Times Square — then the world’s largest toy store — and for bringing a trio of spectacular tenants to the former 666 Fifth Ave. Landlords and tenants valued his professionalism; journalists appreciated the inside knowledge he generously, and often amusingly, shared; his colleagues loved the homemade cookies he brought to the office every week.

A man beloved for many reasons — and for all seasons.

The weekend opening of Milk & Honey cafe at LCOR’s 1515 Surf Ave. was the icing on the cake for the twin-towered project overlooking the Coney Island Boardwalk.

It’s Brooklyn’s third Milk & Honey, the casual eatery with locations in Ditmas Park and Bay Ridge. “It’s the perfect setting for us, right by the beach in a building that’s redefining modern living in Coney Island,” said eatery owner Yasser “Max” Habib.

Milk & Honey cafe on Surf Avenue in Brooklyn. milkandhoneycafebk/Instagram

The rental building is part of a residential development boom along Surf Avenue, which is unrecognizably transformed from what it was just 10 years ago.

The project’s 463 apartments are 75% leased, including 139 affordable units that are 100% leased.

The producers of hit shows like The Peaky Blinders have put pen to paper on a £4 billion ($5.28 billion) gambling deal.

Banijay Group (Banijay) is responsible for the Cillian Murphy-led gangster show, alongside other television brands like Big Brother and Masterchef.

Now the production company is entering into the entertainment and gambling sector with a deal to take the majority of CVC Capital Partners VII’s stake in Tipico Group (Tipico) and to create a whole new entity, Banijay Gaming.

CVC announces Banijay gambling deal

CVC published a press statement about the billion-dollar deal to move its lion’s share in Tipico to Banijay. The deal, according to CVC, will also see the creation of a “European champion in sports betting and online gaming.”

This is in reference to the finer points of the deal, where the French company Betclic and the existing shares of Tipico will merge to create a new entity, Banijay Gaming.

A statement by Tipico explained the deal as “Banijay Group will buy the major stake of CVC in Tipico in cash, and all shareholders of Betclic and Tipico, including the respective founders, will become shareholders of the combined entity.”

The Tipico release suggests that Banijay will double its expected revenue by bringing these two betting companies together. The deal would mean that Banijay Gaming would have an audience of “almost 6.5m unique active players annually, operate more than 1,250 betting shops in Germany and Austria and employ 5,300 employees.”

Tipico merges in bid to become European betting powerhouse

CEO of Banijay Group, François Riahi, said of the merger, “I am particularly pleased to see that Tipico founders have decided to partner with us to build a new European leader in the sports betting business, rolling over all their stake in Tipico into Banijay Gaming, which is fully consistent with our DNA to gather strong entrepreneurs for the long term and a testimony to their trust in the future value creation.”

Around 64.9% of the combined entity will be owned by Banijay, with 35.1% being shared out amongst the partners in the deal (Tipico founders, CVC, Nicolas Béraud, and Tipico managers).

AI giant Anthropic is facing a possible head-on collision with the Trump administration — as concerns from conservatives multiply that the fast-growing firm carries a left-wing bias, The Post has learned.

Investors in the San Francisco-based company — known for its popular Claude chatbot — include the Ford Foundation, a notoriously left-leaning group that bought $5 million worth of Anthropic shares in March 2024 in the bankruptcy of disgraced Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX crypto empire, according to little-noticed court filings.

Earlier this month, Vice President JD Vance called out the Ford Foundation by name while vowing to “go after the NGO network that foments, facilitates and engages in violence” following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is a prominent donor to Democrats. Getty Images for HubSpot

That’s after Anthropic recently irritated Trump officials by barring federal contractors from using its tools for some law enforcement purposes. Some at the White House have grumbled that Anthropic, whose CEO Dario Amodei is a prominent Democratic donor, could be “selectively enforcing its policies” due to differing political views, Semafor reported.

Taken together, the two data points are likely to invite unwelcome scrutiny for Anthropic — even as rivals including Sam Altman’s OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI have worked to curry favor with the White House, a source close to the Trump administration said.

“When [the White House] is looking for a collaborative partner and suddenly they start being obstinate over White House objectives, and it comes to surface that they got a significant investment from a hostile political organization – which is what I would consider the Ford Foundation to be – I think you’re going to see a lot of eyebrows being raised,” the source added.

Anthopic’s backers include Amazon and Google. REUTERS

Anthropic, whose backers include Amazon and Google, is competing with OpenAI, xAI and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta for everything from lucrative federal contracts to crafting potential federal regulations around AI.

But even before the latest flap over AI usage by federal contractors, Anthropic’s relationship with the White House – and key administration officials like AI czar David Sacks – was already seen as shaky at best.

Anthropic’s Amodei called Trump a “feudal warlord” in a now-deleted social media post expressing support for Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election. In 2018, he described Trump as a “serious and legitimate threat to the rule of law.”

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s sister, Daniela, has a long history of donating to Democrats. ANTHROPC

During a May episode of the popular “All In” podcast, Sacks said Anthropic was part of group of tech “doomers” that he described as “committed leftists” and “Trump haters” with ties to the effective altruism movement, which once counted Bankman-Fried among its elite backers.

Sacks also pointed out that several ex-Biden administration staffers had joined Anthropic and that Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, a Democratic megadonor, was part of its board of directors.

Amodei was one of the few tech honchos who skipped Trump’s inauguration in January, though he did attend an administration event about energy policy in Pittsburgh in July.

White House AI czar David Sacks has said Anthropic is part of a group of tech “doomers” that are “committed leftists.” REUTERS

He has also raised the hackles of some AI leaders with frequent warnings about the technology’s risks. Amodei has said executives and politicians should stop “sugar-coating” the mass layoffs that could occur due to AI and suggested unemployment could hit 20%. He’s also warned of a 25% chance that things go “really, really badly” for humanity as AI gets more advanced.

Daniela Amodei, his sister and a fellow co-founder of Anthropic, has a long history of donating to Democrats, include Harris, Joe Biden and Barack Obama.

“When it comes to policy and trying to foment the golden age of American economic dominance, the White House is looking for partners who want to put America first and want to work together collaboratively,” the source close to the White House added.

Anthropic has expressed support for the White House’s AI Action Plan. Christopher Sadowski

Despite its differences with the administration, Anthropic has secured a number of federal contracts – including a $200 million contract with the Department of War and a partnership with the US General Services Administration.

Anthropic has also expressed support for the White House’s AI Action Plan, declaring it was “encouraged by the plan’s focus on accelerating AI infrastructure and federal adoption, as well as strengthening safety testing and security coordination.”

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

Anthropic’s valuation was just $18.4 billion in early 2024. But as of earlier this month, Anthropic had secured an $183 billion post-money valuation. Depending on the share structure, that means Ford Foundation’s stake, while tiny compared to key backers like Google and Amazon, has seen a huge increase in value over the last year.

Anthropic has secured a number of federal contracts, including a $200 million contract with the Pentagon and a partnership with the US General Services Administration. Jen Golbeck/SOPA Images/Shutterstock

An Anthropic spokesperson said the Ford Foundation represents a small fraction of the firm’s overall investor base. Ford does not have any influence over Anthropic’s policy positions or business activities, the spokesperson added.

“We are committed to protecting America’s lead in AI, defending and upholding America’s democratic values, and contesting the advance of authoritarian adversaries,” the Anthropic spokesperson said. “As part of that commitment, Anthropic was an early mover in deploying AI for national security and intelligence work, and we work with the intelligence community in many different capacities.”

The spokesperson also pushed back on the notion that Anthropic has a rift with the Trump administration.

Vice President JD Vance called out the Ford Foundation by name, vowing to “go after the NGO network that foments, facilitates and engages in violence” following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Getty Images

While Anthropic’s policies bar the use of its AI tools for “direct domestic surveillance and related collection of data,” multiple federal law enforcement agencies “are currently using Claude for research, analysis, and other use cases.”

Other AI giants, including OpenAI, Microsoft and Google, have policies restricting use of their AI tools for surveillance purposes.

A Ford Foundation spokesperson said: “Like any other passive investor in a company, the Ford Foundation has no role in Anthropic’s management or business activities.”

Vance, who co-hosted an episode of “The Charlie Kirk Show” after the assassination, alleged that the Ford Foundation and the George Soros-backed Open Society Foundations had provided funding to progressive magazine The Nation.

The vice president slammed the outlet for misrepresenting Kirk’s words in an article titled “Charlie Kirk’s Legacy Deserves No Mourning.” In response, Open Society said it never funded The Nation, while Ford Foundation said it hasn’t funded the outlet since 2019.

The allegation was part of a larger pledge by Vance to target progressive groups that he accused of stoking a rise of left-wing violence.

The Justice Department is currently pursuing two anti-monopoly cases against Google – one over search and another over advertising technology.

“We routinely meet with regulators, including with the DOJ to discuss this case. As we’ve publicly said, we’re concerned the current proposals would harm the American economy and national security,” a Google spokesperson said.

The DOJ did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

The department has laid out potential remedies in the search case, including making Google divest parts of its business such as the Chrome Web browser and ending agreements that make it the default search engine on devices like Apple’s iPhone.

The trial over which of the remedies are appropriate is scheduled to take place in April, with a final ruling expected in August.

President Trump is expected to dial back on some of the antitrust policies pursued under the former President Joe Biden’s administration, potentially including a bid to break up Google over its dominance in online search, industry experts have said.

President Trump on Monday said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s largest chip manufacturer, will spend $100 billion in the United States over the next four years to expand its production capacity and bring its most advanced semiconductor processes to its operations in Arizona.

The investment will allow TSMC to begin making artificial intelligence and smartphone chips in Arizona, Mr. Trump said.

With the commitment, TSMC brings its planned total spending in the United States to $165 billion. The money will expand the company’s footprint in Arizona from three manufacturing plants to six, add 25,000 jobs and create a research and development center to develop future production processes.

TSMC’s expansion comes after years of work to rev up domestic manufacturing of semiconductors. For more than five years, Washington officials have been concerned that TSMC’s dominance of the chip industry had created a national security risk. They feared that the United States could lose access to those advanced chips, which were produced in Taiwan, because Beijing wants to reclaim the island as part of China.

The previous Trump administration began to lobby TSMC to build plants in the United States. The Biden administration advanced those efforts by passing the CHIPS Act, a bipartisan bill that provided $39 billion in federal funding for the construction of new and expanded manufacturing facilities to make the tiny electronics that power everything from cars to iPads.

During a White House event, Mr. Trump said that TSMC’s investment would reduce America’s national security risk and encourage other companies to make more of their products in the United States.

“Semiconductors are the backbone of the 21st century economy, and really without the semiconductors, there is no economy,” Mr. Trump said, adding that “we must be able to build the chips and semiconductors that we need right here in American factories, with American skill and American labor.”

Appearing alongside Mr. Trump, C.C. Wei, TSMC’s chief executive, said the company would begin making A.I. chips and smartphone chips in the United States. He added that the factory expansion had been supported by American customers, including Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm and Broadcom.

Mr. Trump said the investment would help TSMC avoid tariffs of 25 percent or more on chips manufactured in Taiwan. Since taking office in January, he had threatened tariffs of 100 percent on Taiwanese chips and criticized the CHIPS Act for failing to get companies like TSMC to make more chips domestically.

Since Mr. Trump took office in January, TSMC and Taiwanese officials have been scrambling to respond to his tariff threats. In January, Mr. Wei met with Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, about investments that TSMC could make. They explored the possibility of TSMC’s investing in the U.S. chipmaker, Intel, in a deal that would see it take over the Silicon Valley icon’s manufacturing operations. Taiwanese officials also traveled to Washington and floated deals to invest in the United States.

The investment more than doubles TSMC’s commitment to the United States and increases the capabilities of the chips it produces in Arizona.

Under the CHIPS Act, TSMC had committed to invest $65 billion to build three factories in Arizona. The production process it had committed to bringing to the United States is a legacy technology that makes less sophisticated chips than the ones it produces in Taiwan. It received $6.6 billion in federal funding to support the project.

With its appearance on Monday, TSMC will become the latest in a string of companies to visit the White House and make investment commitments. In January, OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank promised to spend $500 billion on data centers over the next four years. Last month, Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, met with Mr. Trump before the company committed to spending $500 billion over four years, with some of that support going to a new factory in Houston to make artificial intelligence servers.

“They’re coming here in huge size because they want to be in the greatest market in the world, and they want to avoid the tariffs,” Mr. Lutnick said at the event on Monday. “If they’re not here, they’d have to suffer.”

Camping World — which runs more than 250 RV dealerships across the country — raised the new gigantic flag at its Greenville, NC, location in October, according to WLBT.

Greenville, NC, officials have demanded that the massive American flag over a Camping World dealership come down because of zoning regulations. WITN

Local zoning officials say the Stars and Stripes fluttering over the RVs is 15 times bigger than allowed. Even the 120-foot flagpole is too big, coming in at nearly twice the height permitted by local law.

The city started citing Camping World on Wednesday, and the penalties are racking up quickly: As of Friday, there had already been six violations that will cost about $1,150 in fines.

Lemonis said it doesn’t matter because Old Glory is not going anywhere.

“The flag is not coming down,” said the 50-year-old tycoon, whose reality show involves him investing his own money in struggling small businesses.

“You can fine me all you want City of Greenville North Carolina. #NoAmericanFlagIsTooBig,” Lemonis wrote in the social-media post.

It’s not the first time Camping World has gone to battle against local zoning laws over the American flag. In August, a dealership outside Stockton, Calif., demanded the firm take down a similarly huge banner over worries the flagpole could fall over.

Lemonis was just as obstinate then, ordering the dealer to keep it up.

“If we felt like we were putting people in danger or causing any issues with air traffic, which would absolutely not be OK, then I wouldn’t do it,” he told Fox40 at the time.

San Joaquin County officials later gave the dealership the green light to keep the flag flying, Fox 26 News said.

Camping World has more than 250 spots across the country. WITN

But Greenville has proven more forceful in its condemnations.

The City Council denied the company’s request to permit the flag earlier this month, claiming Camping World knew what it was doing when it knowingly broke the size regulations.

“Violators shall be issued a written citation which must be paid within 72 hours,” the document issuing the fine read, according to the station.

“If a person fails to pay the civil penalty within 72 hours, the city may recover the penalty together with all costs by filing a civil action in the general court of justice in the nature of a suit to collect a debt.”

City officials told Camping World they would write tickets every day the flag flies — and the flagpole must also be pulled out.

So far, the city hasn’t gone to court to collect the fines.

During the spat over the California flag last year, the Lebanon-born entrepreneur said the big banners are “symbolism about how we feel about this country. “

“I happen to be an immigrant,” he said. “I was given the blessing of being able to enter this country and become a citizen, and I’m grateful for it.”

Such expressions of patriotism “have been part of my life since I was a little child down in Miami, Florida, where we had the largest flagpole in Miami at our car dealership,” he said.
