Gecko Robotics, a Pittsburgh-based robotics startup, on Tuesday announced a $71 million deal with the U.S. Navy to cut down ship repair time as the government races to reindustrialize America’s aging defense systems.

The company said its robots — capable of flying, swimming and climbing critical infrastructure — use cameras and sensors to condense a three-month process down to as little as two days. Gecko also said the robots can assess necessary maintenance 50 times faster than other manual techniques.

“This is the kind of stuff that was never possible before, and it’s the reason why it’s taken 18 months to get a destroyer out of the dry dock,” co-founder and CEO Jake Loosararian told CNBC in an interview. “This is not acceptable anymore.”

Loosararian said Gecko will support the Navy’s goal of 80% fleet readiness by 2027 and streamline ship production so that soldiers can focus on fighting and other threats.

The U.S. is increasing its reliance on defense technology startups like Gecko as it seeks to modernize dated U.S. military systems amid rising geopolitical tensions.

These companies are increasingly disrupting traditional defense contractors with innovative artificial intelligence and autonomous tech solutions.

“Software is not enough, and your ability to use artificial intelligence to predict and make decisions is only as good as the data inputs,” Loosararian said. “This is a fundamental shift, and what Gecko does right now, it’s never been done before by any robotics company in the military.”

Since taking office, President Donald Trump has prioritized scaling and restoring U.S. shipbuilding capabilities, which have long lagged behind China. Last month, the administration released a multipage plan to resurrect the struggling sector.

Over the years, Gecko has teamed up with mining, manufacturing, energy and defense businesses to improve aging equipment and slash repair times. That includes defense contractor L3Harris Technologies, independent power operator NAES and mining giant Freeport-McMoRan.

Gecko was last valued at $1.25 billion in a $125 million funding round in June. The two-time CNBC Disruptor 50 company ranked No. 30 on last year’s list.

Motive, a company with software for managing corporate trucks and drivers, on Tuesday filed for an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “MTVE.”

The paperwork puts Motive among a fast-growing group of tech companies looking to go public in 2026. Anthropic, OpenAI and SpaceX have all reportedly considered making their shares widely available for trading next year.

Motive is smaller, reporting a $62.7 million net loss on $115.8 million in revenue in the third quarter. The loss widened from $41.3 million in the same quarter of 2024, while revenue grew about 23% year over year. The company had almost 100,000 clients at the end of September.

Ryan Johns, Obaid Khan and Shoaib Makani started Motive in 2013, originally under the name Keep Truckin. Makani, the CEO, is Khan’s brother-in-law.

Investors include Alphabet’s GV, Base10 Partners, Greenoaks, Index Ventures, Kleiner Perkins and Scale Venture Partners.

Motive’s AI Dashcam device for detecting unsafe driving “has prevented 170,000 collisions and saved 1,500 lives on our roads,” Makani wrote in a letter to investors. Most revenue comes from subscriptions, although Motive does sell replacement hardware and professional services.

The San Francisco company changed its name to Motive in 2022, and as of Sept. 30, it employed 4,508 people. Motive employs 400 full-time data annotators who apply labels that are meant to enhance artificial intelligence models.

Motive has ongoing patent-infringement litigation with competitor Samsara, which went public in 2021 and today has a $22 billion market capitalization.

Southwest Airlines on Monday said it has added cockpit safety alerts to nearly its entire fleet of 800 aircraft.

The safety alert system, designed by Honeywell, sets off verbal and text warnings if a pilot is about to use the wrong runway or approaches too fast for landing.

It’s like the alert systems used in many modern cars, dinging when a driver edges too close to another car, person or curb.

A Southwest Airlines plane takes off from Las Vegas International Airport in February. REUTERS

“Honeywell’s SmartRunway and SmartLanding software will provide our pilots with enhanced situational awareness to ensure the highest level of safety while operating on runways throughout the network,” Andrew Watterson, Southwest’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.

The technology is an attempt to avoid incidents like one that occurred on March 20, when a Southwest plane started taking off from a taxiway at Orlando International Airport instead of the runway running alongside it, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Thankfully, an air-traffic controller intervened before take-off – helping to avoid a potential crash on a short taxiway or collision with another plane.

But it’s possible the Honeywell alert could have chimed in sooner, warning: “On taxiway! On taxiway!”

In 2017, an Air Canada jet nearly landed on a taxiway at San Francisco’s airport – where four planes waited with 1,000 passengers on-board.

The following year, the National Transportation Safety Board found that Honeywell’s alerts might have been able to alert the Air Canada pilots of the mistake well before the near-miss.

Honeywell’s alert system can also warn pilots when they are approaching a runway too fast, too high or if they’re overshooting the runway for a “long landing.”

The Honeywell alerts can alert pilots when they are approaching a taxiway instead of a runway, or flying too high or fast for a landing. AFP via Getty Images

“Honeywell systems and software onboard aircraft today help enhance situational awareness for pilots and flight crews — especially in low visibility flying conditions — to avoid wrong surface operations and runway excursions,” Thea Feyereisen, pilot and fellow at Honeywell Aerospace Technologies, said in a note.

“We can’t rely on just one system, as it could fail, and we need multiple ways to notify the pilots of a safety alert – sight, sound and sometimes tactile displays.”

Southwest decided to add the Honeywell alerts across its Boeing 737 fleet early last year to manage safety risks, according to Watterson.

Last August, an advisory panel recommended the Federal Aviation Administration require new aircraft to come equipped with certain cockpit alerts. It did not extend this recommendation to older, existing planes.

The FAA is reviewing this recommendation.

In December, Southwest also instructed flight attendants to start cleaning up the cabin earlier in the landing process – around 18,000 feet instead of 10,000 feet – in an effort to reduce injuries among the crew.

Other carriers like Alaska Airlines have added the Honeywell alerts to their planes, while manufacturers like Airbus and Boeing are working on their own runway alerts.

Meanwhile, carriers are trying to ease fears of flying following several highly-reported crashes and near-misses.

Some 64% of Americans said they believe air travel is very or somewhat safe – a drop from 71% the year before, according to a poll conducted by AP-NORC in February.
