Thursday’s Opening Day may be the calm before the storm for Major League Baseball.

The league’s collective bargaining agreement with its players expires at the end of this season. Owners, with the commissioner’s backing, are almost sure to push for a salary cap (which would likely come with a salary floor to get players to the negotiating table).

MLB owners have never been able to get a cap passed by the players union. It’s unclear if the end of the 2026 season will lead to a different result, but MLB Players Association Interim Executive Director Bruce Meyer told ESPN last month he expects a lockout is “all but guaranteed.”

In addition to the CBA’s expiration, there are major shifts underway for baseball media rights. One-third of the league’s teams didn’t have local TV deals in place for this season until this week.

Nine MLB teams – the Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, and Detroit Tigers – announced Wednesday their brand new MLB-operated team channels will be carried by DirecTV.

Most of those teams had previously been part of Main Street Sports (previously Diamond Sports Group), which operates FanDuel Sports Networks (previously Bally Sports). That entity has been teetering with liquidation, and the teams terminated their contracts with the company due to missed payments earlier this year.

A 10th team, the Atlanta Braves, is launching a new network called BravesVision. The Braves and Charter’s Spectrum announced a multiyear distribution agreement earlier this week.

MLB ideally wants the rights to all 30 teams in its control by the end of the 2028 season so that it can sell the in-market local games as a national package to a streamer. That would become the modern replacement to regional sports networks, and it would likely be a new, coveted package for streaming services such as ESPN and Amazon Prime Video.

Also at the end of the 2028 season, MLB’s national media rights for all of its packages will expire, allowing the league to redistribute games to its partners and potentially select new ones.

NBC, ESPN, Fox and a combined CBS/Turner have dominated national rights for the past few decades.

“The key in media negotiations now is having all of your rights available,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told me last year. “If you have all of your content – all of your playoffs, all of your regular season – available, there will be buyers, and I’m confident there will be buyers at a higher price for us.”

Manfred has even floated the idea of expanding to 32 teams and realigning the league geographically, upending or even eliminating the American and National leagues that have existed for more than 100 years.

Soaring TV ratings

It’s, of course, unclear how much of this hypothetical change will actually come to fruition.

But the potential for transformation at MLB is greater than at any of the other Big 4 professional leagues in the U.S.

And yet, baseball isn’t struggling — on the contrary. The implementation of the pitch clock in 2023 has led to shorter games, rising attendance and higher TV ratings.

Rob Manfred, Commissioner of the MLB, attends the annual Allen and Co. Sun Valley Media and Technology Conference at the Sun Valley Resort in Sun Valley, Idaho, U.S., on July 9, 2025.

David A. Grogan | CNBC

More than 50 million people in the U.S., Canada and Japan watched Game Seven of the World Series last year – the most-watched baseball game in 34 years. MLB recently wrapped up the World Baseball Classic – a global preseason tournament – which captured nearly 11 million viewers on Fox and Fox Deportes for its final game.

MLB team valuations rose 13% from last year. The average MLB team is now worth $2.95 billion, according to CNBC Sport data.

Still, the profitability of the league is in far worse shape than it is for the NFL, NBA and NHL, according to CNBC’s calculations. In 2025, MLB’s 30 teams had an EBITDA — earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization — margin of under 2%. Team average revenue was $426 million with average EBITDA of $7 million, including non-MLB ballpark events. In contrast, the comparable margin for the NFL was 20%; the NBA, 21% and the NHL, 22%, according to CNBC’s most recent valuations.

The new CBA at the end of this season could be the first significant step toward a very different MLB. But, similar to the WNBA, which announced its new CBA earlier this week, MLB must ensure negotiations to get a new labor agreement don’t jeopardize a wave of positive momentum.

A major teachers’ union is calling for its members to skip Target when buying back-to-school supplies, the latest twist in a series of boycotts that have targeted the big-box retailer as its turnaround shows signs of life, CNBC has learned.

The AFT, or American Federation of Teachers, passed a resolution Thursday that calls on its 1.8 million members and others to shop at local stores and not at Target, saying the company did not respond adequately to the surge of federal immigration enforcement in the retailer’s hometown of Minneapolis this winter. Federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, during the operation.

The labor union, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, plans to urge a similar resolution at AFL-CIO’s convention in Minneapolis this summer and at conventions held by other organizations, including the NAACP and LULAC, AFT President Randi Weingarten said.

Target declined to comment.

Target’s annual sales have declined for the past three years in a row, but the company’s new CEO Michael Fiddelke laid out an ambitious plan earlier this month to refresh its stores, add more enticing merchandise and return to sales growth. The retailer said it expects net sales to rise about 2% this fiscal year compared with the prior year and anticipates sales will grow every quarter.

It is unclear if and how much the AFT’s call for a back-to-school boycott could hurt Target, which is trying to win back customers. Earlier this month, Atlanta area pastor Jamal Harrison Bryant announced the end of a yearlong boycott of the company, called Target Fast, which had started because of the company’s rollback of major diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. At a press conference, Bryant said Target has demonstrated its commitment to the Black community with investments in Black businesses and donations to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Yet other activists leading a separate boycott, including former Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner, have said they continue to call for shoppers to steer clear of Target.

The retailer has attributed some of its sales losses to backlash to its DEI decision, along with other factors including company missteps with merchandise, a weaker store experience and softer discretionary spending.

At an investor meeting in Minneapolis in early March, Fiddelke stressed that it’s “a new chapter for Target.” He said the company is “doing the work to build connection with new guests, deepen relationships with existing guests and earn back trust with guests we’ve disappointed.”

In a separate email to Target employees earlier this month, Fiddelke highlighted how the retailer is putting its strategy into action, including through its move to cut prices on more than 3,000 items and the opening of its 2,000th store. He said Target has made progress with winning back trust, too, noting the end of the Target Fast boycott.

He said Target has had “ongoing conversations with the organizers” of the boycott, who have “acknowledged the meaningful contributions Target has made, and will continue to make, to the Black community.”

In an interview with CNBC, Weingarten said the AFT’s boycott is focused on what she called Target’s lack of response to the surge of aggressive and violent immigration enforcement in its own backyard. Weingarten said the AFT sent a letter to Target and met with Target staff to encourage them to speak up before the union moved to pass the resolution.

“Target was negotiating with our colleagues in the civil rights community for weeks and weeks and weeks,” she said. “They could have very easily dealt with both [concerns about DEI and immigration enforcement] and they chose not to.”

She said Target is “more worried about standing with the Trump administration than the communities that made them a profitable company.”

Fiddelke joined dozens of executives from Minnesota-based corporations in co-signing a letter in late January calling for an “immediate de-escalation” in the state after the fatal shooting of Pretti. However, the letter did not name the shooting victims Pretti or Good or call out the president, his immigration policies or federal agents.

Fiddelke also shared a video message with employees that more directly acknowledged current events, but stopped short of calling for ICE agents to leave the city or for accountability in the two shooting deaths.

Weingarten described the CEOs’ letter as “insulting” and said it “basically blamed both sides.”

She said the union, which includes many teachers, can have the greatest financial impact during the back-to-school shopping season this summer and fall. By passing the resolution now, she said, the AFT can get the word out to members and “give Target enough time to come back to its senses.”

BuzzFeed on Thursday flagged going concern doubts and said it will not provide a forecast for 2026 as it evaluates strategic options, sending the digital media company’s shares down 7% after the bell.

BuzzFeed has been grappling with a cash crunch as digital advertisers increasingly favor social media platforms such as TikTok and Meta Platforms’ Instagram.

Founded by Jonah Peretti and John Johnson in 2006, BuzzFeed built its audience through listicles before expanding into a newsroom to challenge stalwarts like the New York Times.

Founded in 2006, BuzzFeed built its audience through listicles. Co-founder Jonah Peretti, above, in 2021 when BuzzFeed went public. Getty Images for BuzzFeed Inc.

It went public via a blank-check merger in 2021 with an enterprise value of $1.5 billion. The stock has lost 98% of its value since then.

“The current market value of the company does not reflect the strength of our individual brands,” CEO Peretti said on a post-earnings call. “In other words, we believe the sum of the parts is worth more than the whole.”

BuzzFeed, with a market capitalization of $28.3 million, said it may lack sufficient cash to meet its financial obligations over the next 12 months. It ended 2025 with cash and cash equivalents of $8.5 million.

Though BuzzFeed was one of the defining brands of the social-media-driven digital publishing era, its “situation could be a sign that being well-known and getting a lot of clicks isn’t enough anymore,” said Emarketer analyst Grace Harmon.

BuzzFeed said it may lack sufficient cash to meet its financial obligations over the next 12 months. Above, the newsroom in 2014. REUTERS

While BuzzFeed has significantly reduced operating costs and real estate obligations, it still faces “legacy commitments that are burdening the business,” CFO Matt Omer said in a statement.

It offloaded a few assets in 2024 to enhance profitability, selling First We Feast, the creator of YouTube’s popular talk show “Hot Ones,” for $82.5 million. It divested publisher Complex to live-video shopping app NTWRK in an all-cash transaction valued at $108.6 million.

British media group the Independent took control of BuzzFeed’s UK and Ireland editorial and commercial operations in a multi-year licensing deal the same year.

For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, BuzzFeed reported revenue of $56.5 million, compared to $56.2 million in the same period last year.

We all know that Paramount Skydance finally won the bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery.

But who was the real winner in this takeover tussle of the century?

The epic, six-month tango between some of the largest players in media for the owner of the Warner Bros. studio, HBO Max streamer and CNN came to a suitably stunning finish late Thursday — although regular readers of this column probably weren’t too surprised.

Let’s start with Netflix and its co-CEO Ted Sarandos, the architect of the streaming giant’s thwarted bid to snare WBD. Until just days ago, he had remained the official frontrunner. Ted can best be described as both a winner and a loser.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos departs the White House on February 26, 2026 in Washington, DC. Getty Images

He’s a winner here for the simple reason that he walked away, albeit after lots of drama. That’s because Netflix didn’t need to do this deal. Shares of Netflix soared more than 10% after I posted on my X feed that Netflix was going to cave.

Deals like this aren’t how Netflix became one of the biggest and most successful media com panies ever created. It has grown organically. Yet Sarandos spent months cobbling together mountains of debt while inviting regulatory scrutiny. By dropping out, Sarandos can go back to building his business.

 More From Charles Gasparino

Now here’s why Sarandos is a loser: He went there. Why this seasoned media mogul thought all this was a good deal for shareholders (he lost $200 billion in market value during negotiations) — and why he thought he had a shot with the Trump antitrust cops in combining the No. 1 and No. 3 streamers — is still a mystery.

It’s also still unclear if the feds have completely dropped their early Section 2 Sherman Act monopoly inquiry into Netflix’s already powerful size and its ability to squeeze consumers.

Then there’s David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery.

He’s a clear winner. I’ve known Zas for years, when he toiled through the infrastructure of NBCUniversal, then decamped as CEO of Discovery Inc.

Paramount Skydance chairman and CEO David Ellison arrives before President Donald Trump delivers the State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, on Feb. 24, 2026. AP

He got his big break running a bona fide media conglomerate in 2022 when AT&T spun out Warner Media and his mentor, the legendary John Malone, arranged a new company combining it with Discovery and making Zas its CEO. He got off to a rocky start, taking heat for cost cuts because of all the debt involved and for not delivering on results.

But slowly, Zas began to rebuild what is now Warner Bros. Discovery. In 2025, his company was poised for something big, but you wouldn’t know it from its stock price. Then magic happened: first, an unsolicited bid by Paramount Skydance at $19 a share when his stock was at around $12.

Then he went to work dangling WBD in front of a who’s who of media and tech companies. He got plenty of interest until there were just two, Netflix and Paramount Skydance.

Zas wanted at least $30 a share and people laughed. Last week, he got his number plus a buck as Paramount swooped in with a $31 a share, $80.5 billion offer.

David Zaslav attends “One Battle After Another” world premiere at the TCL Chinese theatre in Hollywood, California on September 8, 2025. AFP via Getty Images

Paramount Skydance chief David Ellison is also a winner, and not just for pulling off the defining media deal of his generation. He also displayed the wisdom to put one of the best media dealmakers in the business, Gerry Cardinale, in charge of his pursuit of WBD.

Ellison is the son of tech billionaire Larry Ellison, who provided financial backing for the deal, so it’s tempting to write him off as a lucky sperm kid. I’m here to tell you he’s smart and insightful and knows what he doesn’t know. He started with a small indie film producer, saw the depressed values in media and snapped up Paramount, with its studio, low-ranked streamer and once-prominent CBS unit.

Now, Ellison sits on top of one of the biggest media companies in the world. He snared what looked like a white whale by playing the long game: lawsuits challenging WBD’s initial decision to sell to Netflix, hostile bids and plenty of acrimony. Yes, there’s lots of debt in this deal, and there will be cost-cutting. But as I see it Ellison really didn’t overpay at the end.

People thought he would use his dad’s money to win by throwing $34 a share at Zas but he stopped at $31. The reason: Cardinale, the best bidding-war banker in the business.

He also listened to his GC, Makan Delrahim, and pops and didn’t overpay. Cardinale & Co., saw the regulatory shoals faced by Netflix.

If Ellison is a winner, so is Cardinale and the people around him.

Elsewhere, another winner is PSKY’s reliably smart and accessible flack, Melissa Zukerman; another loser: Netflix board member and partisan Democrat Susan Rice, who irritated the White House with some dumb comments about President Trump at the worst possible time.

But if those are the latest scores, indications are that the hard part may be what comes next, as this new media giant, whatever it’s called, weighs painful cost cuts and rejiggering to stay competitive. Stay tuned for the next crop of winners and losers.

Elon Musk’s xAI, which merged with SpaceX last week, is facing increased pressure from environmental and civil rights groups over pollution concerns, this time at the company’s facility in Southaven, Mississippi.

On Friday, the Southern Environmental Law Center and Earthjustice, on behalf of the NAACP, sent a notice of intent to sue xAI and subsidiary MZX Tech LLC, saying the company’s use of dozens of natural gas-burning turbines requires a federal permit, violates the Clean Air Act and harms nearby communities.

Pollution from the turbines, which xAI has also used in Memphis, Tennessee, for its Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 data centers, has been a major source of local contention for more than a year.

Plans for a third data center in Southaven, located about 20 miles from Memphis, were announced early this year, when Mississippi Republican Governor Tate Reeves said he expected the project to create “hundreds of permanent jobs throughout DeSoto County.”

Launched by Musk in 2023, xAI is trying to compete with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google in the booming generative AI market. On Feb. 2, Musk said SpaceX, his rocket maker and defense contractor, acquired xAI in a deal that valued the combined entity at $1.25 trillion.

Musk is banking on the area in and around Memphis as the foundation of his AI ambitions, and he’s been flouting environmental rules in order to develop as quickly as possible. Musk’s social network X, formerly Twitter, is also owned by xAI, which created the Grok AI chatbot and image generator.

XAI is currently under a myriad of government investigations in Europe, Asia and the U.S. after Grok enabled users to easily create and share deepfake porn, including explicit imagery depicting child sexual abuse.

Last year, residents in the majority-Black community of Boxtown in South Memphis testified at public hearings about a stench in the air, and the impact of worsening smog on their health caused by xAI’s use of natural gas turbines. Research by scientists at the University of Tennessee also found that xAI’s turbine use added to air pollution woes in the area.

Environmental advocates, including the NAACP, had previously said they would sue to stop xAI’s un-permitted use of the turbines in Memphis. But they stopped short of filing a legal complaint after Shelby County’s health department allowed xAI to treat the turbines as temporary, non-road engines, and issued permits for their use.

At the federal level, the EPA recently clarified gray areas of the law and said these turbines can’t be categorized as temporary non-road engines. Nonetheless, xAI has been using the turbines across state lines without obtaining federal permits.

XAI didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Noise pollution from the turbines has also been a source of local consternation. Jason Haley, a Southaven resident, told CNBC the turbines make headache-inducing noises around the clock that he can hear inside his home.

Haley is part of a group called Safe and Sound which documents the decibel levels, and is pressing local officials to stop xAI from making so much noise, especially overnight, with its turbines.

Mississippi officials will hold a public hearing, scheduled for Tuesday, for community members who wish to express their concerns about xAI’s expansion plans in the area. The hearing will focus on whether the state should give xAI permission to install and run 41 permanent turbines at its Southaven facility, Mississippi Today previously reported.

Similar community dynamics are playing out across the U.S. as tech giants rush to construct massive data centers, which can strain local energy and water supply and cause prices to increase.

In November, Microsoft ended efforts to build a data center in Wisconsin due to the community’s vocal opposition. Amazon also pulled out of plans for a data center in Arizona after community protests.

In terms of Musk’s Southaven project, Patrick Anderson, a senior attorney with SELC, said xAI “has to follow the law, just like any other company.”

“And when it flouts the Clean Air Act’s bedrock protections against unpermitted emissions, it puts the health and welfare of ordinary citizens at risk,” Anderson said in an email. “That’s why we intend to hold xAI accountable here.”

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Elon musk and the xAI logo.

The Environmental Protection Agency closed a loophole this week that Elon Musk’s xAI had exploited to rapidly stand up its first data center in Memphis, Tennessee.

Musk’s artificial intelligence startup created a kind of off-grid power plant for its Colossus facility by using a cluster of gas-burning turbines. The company was able to avoid air pollution permitting by classifying the turbines, which were mounted on trailers, as “non-road engines.”

The EPA’s updated rule clarifies that those kinds of turbines can’t be designated as non-road engines and companies must also obtain Clean Air Act permits before installing them, particularly if their aggregate emissions will go above “major source thresholds” of pollution.

The Shelby County Health Department in Memphis previously allowed xAI to designate its turbines as non-road engines, and to start using them without any public comment and environmental impact review, as would have been required in a standard permitting process.

Representatives from the county’s health department and xAI didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The move by the federal regulator could slow xAI’s expansion in the Memphis area as it builds out facilities, packed with Nvidia’s graphics processing units, to develop AI models and services in a booming generative AI market currently led by OpenAI and Google.

At the Memphis data center, which first opened in 2024, xAI conducts inference and training for its Grok models and apps, including a chatbot and image generator tightly integrated into the company’s social network X.

While xAI had previously told Memphis regulators that its turbines would include state-of-the-art pollution controls, known as selective catalytic reduction technology, its supplier, Solaris Energy Infrastructure told CNBC in June that it did not install such controls in xAI’s “temporary” turbines.

SEI, a Houston-based energy services provider, has seen its stock price soar in recent months, partly due to xAI’s expansion plans. SEI didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Pollution from the turbines has been a major source of local contention.

Last year, residents in the majority-Black community of Boxtown in South Memphis testified at public hearings about a rotten egg-like stench in the air, and the impact of worsening smog on their heart and lung health.

Research by scientists at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville also found that xAI’s turbine use added to air pollution woes around Memphis.

Environmental advocates, including the NAACP, said they would sue to stop xAI’s unpermitted use of the turbines. However, they didn’t file a complaint after the county allowed xAI to treat the turbines as temporary, non-road engines, and issued them permits.

Amanda Garcia, an attorney with the Southern Environment Law Center, which is representing the NAACP, said in an email that her firm will monitor xAI operations to ensure they aren’t violating terms of their permits, and are operating within the bounds of current EPA rules at forthcoming facilities in nearby Mississippi.

XAI, which recently raised $20 billion from investors including Nvidia and Cisco, is currently being investigated in multiple jurisdictions after its Grok and X apps let users easily create and distribute deepfake violent and sexualized images of women and even children.

Target has come under pressure from protesters and pols in its home state of Minnesota after ICE agents detained two employees of the big box retailer who were US citizens.

Federal immigration agents detained the workers inside a Richfield, Minn., store on Jan. 8 after a confrontation that began in the parking lot and spilled into the vestibule, according to local officials and witness accounts.

One of the employees shouted, “I’m literally a US citizen!” as agents escorted him toward a vehicle, The Wall Street Journal noted.

Federal agents entered a St. Paul store — with Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino — without a warrant and detained two US citizens, on January 8, 2026. AP

The duo, Jonathan Aguilar Garcia and Christian Miranda Romano, were doing drive-up duty when they were stopped by agents led by a senior US Border Patrol commander, officials said.

Minnesota state Rep. Michael Howard said the agents entered the store without a warrant and physically detained the workers, while family members and witnesses alleged the incident amounted to racial profiling.

The Department of Homeland Security later said on social media that one individual had been arrested for “assaulting a federal law enforcement offers [sic],” which the defendants’ families and local officials denied.

Both employees were eventually released.

One was reportedly dropped off injured and crying at a nearby Walmart parking lot while the other was briefly taken to a detention center before being let go.

The Post has sought comment from Target, DHS, ICE and US Customs and Border Protection.

Garcia and Romano were not immediately available for comment.

Protests erupted outside the Richfield Target store days after the detentions, with demonstrators demanding the retailer take steps to protect workers and customers from federal immigration agents operating on its property.

US CBP agents are seen outside of a Target store in St. Paul, Minn., on Sunday. AP

Activists chanted, held signs and confronted store management during a Saturday demonstration that drew local residents and faith-based groups.

Organizers said they asked Target to train employees on how to respond to immigration agents, including informing them that access to private areas of stores requires a signed warrant.

Protesters also urged the company to publicly oppose immigration enforcement actions at its locations, arguing that Target’s silence had fueled anger in a community already on edge.

“It’s odd for them at this moment, when Minnesota is under sort of occupation, that they are silent,” said Ben Whalen, a former Richfield City Council member who helped organize the protest.

Video from Richfield, Minnesota shows BP agents detaining a teenager working at a Target store.
— WarMonitor (@TheWarMonitor) January 8, 2026

Whalen said the group met with the store’s manager to press for clearer policies and stronger protections for employees following the incident.

Federal immigration enforcement has surged across Minnesota in recent weeks, with ICE and Border Patrol agents conducting operations in residential neighborhoods, retail parking lots and inside big-box stores.

The activity intensified following a major federal deployment that has netted hundreds of illegal immigrants — including dozens accused of serious violent offenses — and rattled residents, according to officials.

Tensions exploded after the Jan. 7 fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old US citizen, by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, with the incident sparking days of protests and sharp political backlash.

Demonstrators flooded streets and gathered outside government buildings and federal targets, with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and other officials calling for ICE to leave the city as investigations into the shooting continue and public anger over the federal presence shows no sign of easing.

Graffiti reading “We’ll do it again, ICE out now!” is seen on the exterior wall of a Target store in Minneapolis on Jan. 11. AFP via Getty Images

In the early phase of the operation, agents arrested roughly 300 people in a two-day sweep in the Minneapolis area, according to federal officials, with at least 10 identified as accused killers or violent child sex offenders.

Federal immigration enforcement has played out at major retailers other than Target across Minnesota.

Immigration officials have detained people inside Walmart stores and in parking lots around the Twin Cities in recent days, according to local officials.

Bovino walks out of a Target store in St. Paul on Sunday. AP

Videos circulating online appear to show agents confronting individuals inside stores and using retail locations as staging areas while operations are underway.

Home Depot parking lots have similarly become frequent sites of enforcement activity, particularly because day laborers — many of them immigrants — have long gathered there seeking temporary construction work.

Activists have urged the company to intervene or discourage the raids, but Home Depot has said federal agents are permitted to operate in publicly accessible areas and that the company does not coordinate with ICE or CBP.

The Post has sought comment from Walmart and Home Depot.

The World Poker Tour took to X in a now-deleted post to say: “WPT Global is a licensee of the World Poker Tour. We do not officially endorse any of their ambassadors.” By Tuesday, Dara O’Kearney and David Lappin of the Chip Race podcast stepped down as ambassadors over the appointment.

In a statement posted on X, the duo wrote: “In June 2025, we joined WPT Global as ambassadors, putting The Chip Race content slate under their sponsorship. We are enormously appreciative of the role that Cameron Soane played in putting that deal together. We saw WPT Global making waves in the poker space and, in particular, investing in the Irish market. We wanted to be a part of that and believed that our brands aligned, both in objectives and values.

“The signing of Ren Lin as a Global Ambassador came as a shock to us. Given our personally held and outspoken views on the scandal surrounding him, it was immediately obvious that our continued roles with the company were untenable. As a result, we are parting ways with WPT Global.”

WPT Global doubles down

WPT Global has doubled down on its choice of ambassador since then, writing in a now-deleted X post: “We’re thorough when reviewing every ambassador we work with, including Tony Lin, and we have full confidence in his integrity and standards. We select ambassadors based on proven performance and results, not follower counts.

“Players like @TheBradOwen & @rampagepoker are great at farming vlog watchers, but are they great poker players? While others may prioritise ‘influence. We stand apart.”

— WPT Global (@wpt_global) January 12, 2026

In a second, longer statement also shared to X, WPT Global indirectly acknowledged the cheating scandal, writing: “WPT Global remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, security, and fairness in online poker. Our decision to collaborate with Tony is rooted in our belief in second chances and our focus on the future.”

Democrat Rep. Ro Khanna has embraced a wealth tax in his home state of California, and his longtime allies in Silicon Valley are now threatening to abandon him.

California labor groups are trying to add a proposal for a statewide tax on billionaires to the November ballot. The proposal is causing a rift among Democrats and enraging some in the tech community, who warn they will leave the state if the measure is adopted.

Khanna last week reacted to the potential exodus in a social media post, saying he echoes what President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said with “sarcasm of economic royalists when they threatened to leave, ‘I will miss them very much.'”

The post prompted not only criticism from tech leaders but also calls for Khanna to be primaried.

“Ro has done a speed run alienating every moderate I know who has supported him. Including myself,” wrote Martin Casado, a partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, in a post on X. “At least that makes voting him the f— out all the more gratifying.”

Garry Tan, CEO of startup accelerator Y Combinator, wrote it’s “Time to primary him.”

Associates of Andreessen Horowitz and Y Combinator are among the top donors to Khanna’s congressional campaign committee, according to recent campaign finance disclosures.

The proposed ballot measure, dubbed the 2026 Billionaire Tax Act, is being pushed by the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West labor union. If enacted, it would levy a one-time 5% tax on the assets of California billionaires to shore up an expected shortfall in the state’s health-care budget.

Should the measure garner enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, it will be up to California voters to decide whether to implement the tax, which would be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2026.

A major reason that tech investors, executives and entrepreneurs are united in vocal opposition is the concern that the tax would apply to unrealized gains. That means that startup founders with a net worth of over $1 billion based on the paper value of their private stock would have to pay tax on their wealth even though it’s illiquid.

“We’re absolutely going to have to figure out how our society adapts to a rapidly increasing wealth gap,” wrote Reddit co-founder and venture investor Alexis Ohanian, in a post on Sunday. “But the answer is definitely not taxing unrealized gains.”

Sarah Drory, a spokesperson for Rep. Khanna, told CNBC in a statement that the congressman is a “passionate supporter of technology and entrepreneurship,” noting that he co-wrote the CHIPS and Science Act, a federal program designed to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing.

Drory said that while Khanna supports a “modest wealth tax on billionaires to deal with staggering inequality and to make sure people have health care,” he also advocates “for commonsense workarounds for startup founders whose companies are not profitable and who have illiquid stock.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom attends the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), in Belem, Brazil, Nov. 11, 2025.

Adriano Machado | Reuters

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is widely considered a contender for the presidency in 2028, opposes state-level billionaire taxes.

“You can’t isolate yourself from the 49 [other states],” Newsom said at the New York Times Dealbook conference earlier this month. “You’ve gotta be pragmatic about it.”

But pressure is growing nationally for Democrats to back efforts to tax the wealthy, as polls repeatedly show wide support for the idea. A Pew Research Center poll earlier this year found that 58% of those surveyed support raising taxes on those making more than $400,000. Among the Democrats surveyed, 74% supported the higher taxes.

Republicans, meanwhile, have been making increasing inroads in Silicon Valley, home to a number of tech billionaires who have traditionally leaned Democratic.

Tech CEOs this year have flocked to the White House to curry the favor of President Donald Trump, who has placed tech leaders in roles within his administration.

Khanna carried California’s 17th Congressional District by more than 30 points in 2024. The deep-blue seat would be highly unlikely to flip to Republicans in 2026.

In a follow-up post on X, Khanna restated his support for a wealth tax.

“Yes, we need entrepreneurs to commercialize disruptive innovation,” Khanna said. “But the idea that they would not start companies to make billions, or take advantage of an innovation cluster, if there is a 1-2 percent tax on their staggering wealth defies common sense and economic theory.”

Vinod Khosla, the founder of Sun Microsystems and Khosla Ventures who boasts a net worth of about $12.6 billion according to Forbes, disagreed with Khanna and said the billionaires will leave the state.

“You are so wrong Ro,” Khosla said in a post on X. “Top prospects for generating wealth in the state will almost certainly leave the state. Every advisor would advise every enterprise that gets big momentum to have key people relocate to another state.”

Meta has been hit with an EU antitrust investigation over its use of AI features in WhatsApp, as the European bloc continues to ramp up challenges to US big tech giants.

The probe will examine whether Meta’s new policy on allowing AI providers’ access to WhatsApp may breach EU competition rules, Brussels said in a statement Thursday morning.

A new policy announced by Meta in October prohibited AI providers from using a tool allowing businesses to contact customers via WhatsApp when AI is the main service offered, the European Commission said.

While businesses may still use AI tools for functions like customer support, the bloc was concerned the new policy might “prevent third party AI providers from offering their services through WhatsApp in the European Economic Area (EEA),” it added.

“The claims are baseless,” a WhatsApp spokesperson told CNBC in a statement, adding that the app’s application programming interface (API) was not designed to support AI chatbots and “puts a strain on our systems.”

“The AI space is highly competitive and people have access to the services of their choice in any number of ways, including app stores, search engines, email services, partnership integrations and operating systems,” the company added.

It comes months on from the Commission fining Google 2.95 billion euros ($3.45 billion) for breaching antitrust rules around online advertising. In April, Apple was fined 500 million euros after being found to have breached anti-steering obligations. The same month, Meta was hit with a 200 million euros fine for breaching obligations to give consumers the choice of a service that uses less of their personal data.

Fines for breaking the EU’s antitrust rules can reach as much as 10% of a company’s annual revenue. There are no dates set for the antitrust investigation to close, but previous cases have run on for years.

“We must ensure European citizens and businesses can benefit fully of this technological revolution and act to prevent dominant digital incumbents from abusing their power to crowd out innovative competitors,” said the bloc’s Commissioner for Competition Teresa Ribera.

The investigation will cover the entire EEA apart from Italy, to avoid an overlap with its own ongoing proceedings for the possible imposition of interim measures concerning Meta’s conduct.

U.S. President Donald Trump has previously threatened the EU with an investigation that could lead to tariffs for imposing fines and regulation on the country’s tech giants.

“As I have said before, my Administration will NOT allow these discriminatory actions to stand,” he said following the EU’s Google fine in September.
