At least he has good taste in newspapers.

Jimmy Kimmel, who was suspended from his late-night show in September over his inflammatory comments about Charlie Kirk’s killer, is featured in next month’s Vanity Fair holding the very edition of The New York Post that trumpeted his on-air return.

The late-night host was photographed holding the Sept. 23 newspaper featuring his grinning face — and the headline, “What a joke!” — while sitting atop Los Angeles’ El Capitan Theatre where his show is filmed.

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is featured in next month’s Vanity Fair holding the very edition of The New York Post that trumpeted his on-air return. Norman Jean Roy / Vanity Fair.

The Post’s front-page story exclusively reported that Kimmel would be back on ABC, though the country’s largest owner of its local affiliate stations wouldn’t air his show after he refused to apologize for his false suggestion that Kirk’s assassin was a pro-Trump Republican.

Sources told The Post that Kimmel negotiated his return to the airwaves directly with Disney CEO Bob Iger and his No. 2, Disney Entertainment Co-Chair Dana Walden, and that he was set to clarity his comments in his monologue but would not issue a mea culpa, as both he and his bosses “didn’t think he did anything wrong.”

Kimmel prominently features in a Vanity Fair article about Hollywood “at a crossroads.” The issue is set to hit newsstands Dec. 2.

The article, which is already available online, consists of a series of vignettes about Hollywood’s movers and shakers — including Paramount Skydance boss David Ellison, celebrity stylist Law Roach and Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

In the piece, Kimmel revisits what Vanity Fair calls a “good news day” — namely, the day Disney-owned ABC put him back on the air after a brief hiatus.

“This September, in the face of censorship, Kimmel unwittingly became a beacon that united everyone from anti-fascists to Ted Cruz,” Vanity Fair wrote. “Soon there were calls to boycott Disney and protest an administration that would dare take away an American’s right to laugh — and to free speech. Perhaps as more rights come under attack, Americans will remember this moment of collective power.”

Kimmel was briefly suspended over his inflammatory comments about Charlie Kirk’s killer. via REUTERS

The longtime TV host was suspended from “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for six days over his tasteless commentary about Kirk’s killer.

Iger and Walden benched the late night star as they faced scrutiny from Federal Communications Chair Brendan Carr, President Trump and major affiliate stations Nexstar and Sinclair.

Meanwhile, Kimmel’s A-list friends like actor Ben Stiller, comedians Wanda Sykes and Marc Maron, rivals Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert — and even former President Obama — backed Kimmel publicly.

Over 1.7 million users also canceled their Disney+, Hulu and ESPN subscriptions following the suspension.

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more.

The Other Big Book Cover Trend

Sure, you’ve noticed that all romance covers look the same these days, but had you picked up on the lit fic trend of bright lettering over a (usually old) painting? It’s not a totally new concept, of course, but it is A Thing right now in a way that feels noteworthy. The NYT‘s Elisabeth Egan digs into the fad’s origins and explores the stories behind eight recent examples. That’s all interesting enough, but what really caught my attention is this bit of analysis:

These covers are the new signifiers of stylish literary fiction, telegraphing gravitas, wit and cool. They make a bid for a certain kind of reader — more city than suburb, more pét-nat than chardonnay. They wouldn’t be caught dead alongside a volume decked out in pop art or, god forbid, metallic lettering.

I hadn’t considered that this design trend might be a conscious choice to contrast literary fiction with the ubiquitous sprayed edges, foils, and stencils of romantasy. Whether intentional or not, it’s interesting to note, and I know I’ll be seeing it everywhere now.

It’s Never Too Late

Oldster Magazine, founded by writer Sari Botton, is one of the great gifts of the contemporary internet, and this essay by Ruth Bonapace about what it’s like to publish your debut novel at the age of 70 is a perfect illustration of why. Bonapace recounts decades of dreaming and the false starts, impostor syndrome, and family obligations that repeatedly made her think it would never happen. Whatever you’re putting off because you think the moment has passed, think again.

An injection pen of Zepbound, Eli Lilly’s weight loss drug, is displayed in New York City on Dec. 11, 2023.

Brendan McDermid | Reuters

Medicare drug plans can now cover Eli Lilly‘s blockbuster obesity drug Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea, CNBC confirmed on Wednesday.

That opens the door for broader access to Zepbound, which is not currently covered by Medicare and many other insurance plans for weight loss. Demand for the injection has soared over the last year despite its roughly $1,000 per month price tag before insurance.

In a statement to CNBC, a spokesperson for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said “current Medicare Part D and Medicaid coverage rules apply” to Zepbound following its landmark approval in December for the most common sleep-related breathing disorder.

Medicare Part D plans can only cover obesity drugs if they are used for an additional medically accepted purpose approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the CMS spokesperson said, referring to the agency’s guidance. The spokesperson added that Part D plans may consider using prior authorization — a process where a provider must first get approval from an insurer — for those drugs to ensure they are being used for that specific purpose.

The FDA on Dec. 20 cleared Zepbound for patients with obesity and moderate-to-severe forms of obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, which refers to breathing interrupted during sleep due to narrowed or blocked airways. That made Zepbound the first drug treatment cleared for the estimated 20 million people with those forms of the disease, according to Eli Lilly.

In a statement on Thursday, Eli Lilly called Medicare’s coverage of Zepbound for the condition “good news.”

Medicare Part D plans are similarly allowed to cover Novo Nordisk‘s weight loss drug Wegovy for its other approved use: lowering cardiovascular risks. The diabetes counterparts of Wegovy and Zepbound — Ozempic and Mounjaro, respectively — are covered by Medicare and most insurance plans.

Both Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are studying their weight loss medicines as treatments for fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease, sleep apnea and more. To be covered, those drugs would need to return late-stage trial results and then be submitted for FDA approval for those uses.

Meanwhile, state Medicaid coverage for Zepbound and other obesity medications depends on what condition they are prescribed for and whether their manufacturer has signed a certain Medicaid drug rebate agreement, according to the spokesperson.

Under that agreement with the secretary of Health and Human Services, manufacturers agree to provide rebates to states in exchange for Medicaid coverage of their drugs. States share the rebates with the federal government.

A state Medicaid program must cover Zepbound if it is prescribed for OSA and Eli Lilly has signed the Medicaid drug rebate agreement, the spokesperson said.

But if Zepbound is prescribed for weight loss, state Medicaid programs are not required to cover it.

The Biden administration in November proposed a rule that would allow Medicare and Medicaid to cover weight loss drugs for patients with obesity. The rule would give millions of people access to weekly injectables, but it would cost taxpayers as much as $35 billion over the next decade.

It is unclear if President-elect Donald Trump’s administration will pursue the rule.
