Nexstar Media Group closed its acquisition of fellow broadcast station group owner Tegna after sealing regulatory approval, despite antitrust lawsuits filed against the deal in recent days.

Nexstar’s $6.2 billion merger with Tegna brings together more than 260 local broadcast TV affiliate stations across the U.S.

Nexstar and Tegna, like other broadcast station group peers, have been looking to consolidate as the industry faces the same challenges as its cable and entertainment media counterparts — namely the drop in pay-TV customers due to the rise of streaming and tech options.

“This transaction is essential to sustaining strong local journalism in the communities we serve. By bringing these two outstanding companies together, Nexstar will be a stronger, more dynamic enterprise—better positioned to deliver exceptional journalism and local programming with enhanced assets, capabilities, and talent,” Nexstar CEO Perry Sook said in a statement.

“We are grateful to President Trump, [FCC] Chairman Carr, and the DOJ for recognizing the dynamic forces shaping the media landscape and enabling this transaction to move forward.”

In February, President Donald Trump endorsed the merger between Nexstar and Tegna in a TruthSocial post after months of criticism about the potential effects of the deal.

The proposed acquisition, which was announced in August, had been expected to close in the second half of 2026.

Broadcast station owners run the affiliate stations of the major networks like ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, and are known for airing local news, sports and other broadcast content. The companies remain profitable due to hefty fees they receive from pay-TV distributors, and have argued that consolidation would preserve local TV news.

However, decades-old laws have prevented such mergers from happening in recent years.

The greenlight from the FCC and DOJ allows the deal to go through by waiving law that prevents any one company from owning broadcast stations that reach more than 39% of the U.S. TV households.

However, in recent days two federal antitrust lawsuits were filed in a move to block the merger — one from attorney generals in eight states, including California and New York, and another from satellite and streaming TV provider DirecTV.

The lawsuits each argue that the combination is anticompetitive and would drive up customer costs, reduce competition, lead to the closure of local newsrooms and cause TV blackouts of stations due to carriage fights with distributors over pricing.

“DIRECTV supports the action taken by the states and has determined it is necessary to join this effort to protect competition and consumers,” said Michael Hartman, general counsel and chief external affairs officer at DirecTV in a release. “We have consistently made clear that this merger is anti-competitive and not in the public interest and, if it goes forward, will trigger a wave of similar consolidation.”

Meme stock GameStop, once a dominant brick-and-mortar video game retailer, is continuing to close more stores in 2026.

The retailer, whose business model was threatened by digital adoption in the gaming industry, closed 590 stores nationwide in fiscal 2024 and said that it plans to close a “significant number of additional stores” in its 2025 fiscal year, which ends in January 2026.

The company didn’t disclose the number of stores that it was closing in fiscal 2025 or where they were located.

However, in recent days, several people on X posted pictures of recently shuttered locations in different states, with one user even linking to an unofficial blog that has been tracking GameStop’s closures.

FOX Business reached out to GameStop for comment.

The company warned in early 2025 that it anticipated closing a “significant number” of additional stores and revised its investment policy, paving the way for the video game retailer to invest in Bitcoin.

“The overall goals of the Investment Policy are to provide sufficient liquidity to meet the day-to-day financial obligations of the Company, and to optimize investment returns within the guidelines of the Investment Policy,” GameStop said at the time.

The company has faced financial difficulties since the 2010s as digital game downloads rose in popularity and competition increased from online retailers such as Amazon and big-box chains.

GameStop has continued to close more stores in 2026. Stephen Yang for the New York Post

A majority of GameStop stores were also located in malls, which faced declining foot traffic.

In its December earnings report, the company reported that revenue continued to decline, falling $39.3 million year over year.

It became a fading relic of the mall era before rapidly becoming one of the most famous meme stocks in market history in 2021.

The video game retailer closed 590 stores in the fiscal 2024 year, with more “additional stores” closing as its 2025 fiscal year wraps up this month. Getty Images

In early January, the company granted CEO Ryan Cohen a performance-based stock option award to drive growth.

In order for him to cash in, the company’s market cap would need to reach $100 billion.

London’s Heathrow Airport closed Friday after a fire at a nearby electrical substation caused a power outage, disrupting travel for tens of thousands of passengers planning to fly in or out of Europe’s busiest airport.

The first flight since the closure departed late Friday local time, and Heathrow posted on X that it hopes to run a “full operation” on Saturday.

More than 800 flights were canceled in and out of the airport on Friday, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware, as of the most recent update, upending travel at the major hub and connecting airport.

Airlines warned travelers that disruptions could continue into the weekend, and Heathrow posted that travelers shouldn’t go to the airport unless advised to do so by their airline.

Source: FlightTracker24

London’s Metropolitan Police said that while there was “no indication of foul play,” the counterterrorism division would now lead the investigation into the fire.

“Given the location of the substation and the impact this incident has had on critical national infrastructure, the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command is now leading enquiries,” the force said in a post on X.

“This is due to the specialist resources and capabilities within that command that can assist in progressing this investigation at pace to minimise disruption and identify the cause,” it said.

“Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage across the airport. … Whilst fire crews are responding to the incident, we do not have clarity on when power may be reliably restored,” a Heathrow spokesperson said earlier Friday.

Canceled and diverted flights

More than 120 flights were already in the air when the closure was announced and were diverted or returned to their originating airports, according to Flightradar24. Nearly three-quarters of the flights scheduled to depart from Heathrow, or 500 flights, and half of the arrivals destined for the airport, 300 flights, were also scrubbed.

Some 145,000 passengers could be affected by the closure, according to aviation data firm Cirium.

Airlines around the world due to operate flights into and out of Heathrow told passengers to stay home.

The fire and airport closure left thousands of travelers stranded. British Airways was the most affected airline, with over half of its Friday schedule canceled.

The airline said it would offer “flexible options” for rebooking to passengers set to travel to or from Heathrow on Friday through the weekend, in an online post.

“Our teams are currently working hard to review our long-haul schedule as well as the implications for our schedule tomorrow and beyond,” it said in a statement.

As the fire appears to be outside of the airlines’ control, they may not be required to cover compensation, according to a note issued by Citi on Friday.

American Airlines, a British Airways partner across the Atlantic, said almost 20 flights from Thursday were diverted or canceled and that it provided overnight hotels for affected customers. It canceled another 20 on Friday.

It was not clear when its operations would resume, and a spokeswoman for American said it would restart Heathrow operations “when airport conditions allow.”

European travel and leisure stocks fell on news of the airport closure.

‘Catastrophic’ fire

Ed Miliband, U.K. energy minister, described the fire as “catastrophic,” according to Reuters, adding that the airport’s backup generator had been affected by the blaze.

Speaking to ITV’s “Good Morning Britain,” Miliband said the National Grid told him “it’s like a fire they’ve never, kind of, quite seen anything like the scale of what happened before,” according to a post by the program on X.

Miliband added that the National Grid was trying to use another backup system to restore power to the airport.

Power cuts also affected about 16,000 homes around the airport. As of 8 a.m. GMT, electrical supply was restored to all but around 4,900, according to the U.K. energy company Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks.

Travel chaos as London’s Heathrow remains closed. Here’s what airlines are telling passengers

‘It makes Heathrow look quite vulnerable’

Heathrow Airport has an estimated 1,300 takeoffs and landings at the airport per day, according to its website. It handled a record 83.9 million passengers last year — a nearly 6% increase from 2023.

Speaking to “Good Morning Britain,” Miliband said on Friday, “We’ve got to understand why this happened, and we’ve got to work out what the lessons are for the resilience of our infrastructure.”

Firefighters douses flames of a fire that broke out at a substation supplying power to Heathrow Airport in Hayes, west London on March 21, 2025.

Benjamin Cremel | Afp | Getty Images

He said the National Grid is looking at whether there is “sufficient resilience” in place at the airport, given that the fire also affected a backup generator.

“It makes Heathrow look quite vulnerable. And therefore, we’ve got to learn lessons … about not just Heathrow, but how we protect our major infrastructure,” Miliband said.

Willie Walsh, CEO of the International Air Transport Association, or IATA, an airline industry group, criticized Heathrow Airport for being “totally dependent on a single power source without an alternative,” in an online statement, describing it as a “total planning failure” by the airport.

Walsh questioned who would cover the costs of the resulting travel disruptions.

“We must find a fairer allocation of passenger care costs than airlines alone picking up the tab when infrastructure fails,” he said. “Until that happens, Heathrow has very little incentive to improve.”

‘Very wide’ implications

Anita Mendiratta, a travel and tourism advisor and founder of consultancy AM&A, described the implications of the fire and closure of the airport as “very wide.”

“What we also need to take into account is over and above passenger traffic, over 4,000 tons of cargo go through Heathrow every single day,” she told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe.”

More than 1.4 million tonnes of cargo flew in and out of Heathrow in 2023, according to a post on the airport’s website, with 90% of goods transported in the hold of passenger aircraft.

Airport officials said they will update travelers “when more information on the resumption of operations is available.”

Travelers can check Heathrow Airport’s website or social media platforms, including X, for the latest information.

Ayesha Curry’s boutique shop and café in Oakland, Calif. is closing “in order to prioritize the safety” of customers and workers, the business announced over the weekend.

Sweet July’s last day in the crime-ridden city will be Feb. 9 — about four years after the wife of NBA star Steph Curry first opened its doors to sell home goods and products from black-owned brands and Bay Area-based artists as well as coffee and pastries.

Ayesha Curry opened the location in 2021. AP

“In order to prioritize the safety of our patrons and staff, we have made the difficult decision to close our Sweet July cafe and store in Oakland,” the shop wrote in an Instagram post Saturday.

“We have loved being a part of Oakland and are grateful for the community that has opened their arms and embraced us. It has been an honor to serve you.”

The shop previously suffered a break-in in 2022 that forced the business to temporarily shut its doors.

The storefront’s glass front entrance was shattered and several items were stolen during the burglary, an Oakland police spokesperson told SF Gate at the time.

The business was named after the summer month that Ayesha Curry has a strong affinity for.

She married superstar NBA player and Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry and gave birth to three of their four children in July.

Sweet July will close its doors next week. Sweet July/Instagram

The shop has the same name as the lifestyle magazine started by the NBA WAG and restaurateur.

“Nestled in the heart of Uptown, Sweet July looks beyond retail to create an experience and a beautiful gathering place for the community that inspired it,” Curry wrote on her website. “A space where new customers feel like regulars, and regulars feel at home.”

Curry’s shop and café is not the first victim of the California city’s crime problem.

The business cited the safety of workers and patrons in its announcement. Google Maps

Big box stores like Target, Denny’s and In-N-Out Burger closed Oakland locations as the businesses struggled with safety concerns.

“While this chapter comes to a close, Sweet July has exciting new ventures on the horizon that we can’t wait to share,” the business wrote Saturday.

Atlassian shares popped 14.9% after the software company blew past Wall Street’s fiscal second-quarter earnings and guidance expectations.

The stock hit a fresh 52-week high and closed at its highest level since April 2022. It was also the stock’s best day since November.

Adjusted earnings came in at 96 cents per share, ahead of the 76 cents per share projected by analysts polled by LSEG. Atlassian reported revenues of $1.29 billion, versus the $1.24 billion estimate.

For the third quarter, Atlassian said it anticipates $1.35 billion in revenue, above the $1.31 billion LSEG estimate and previous guidance.

Atlassian benefited from robust cloud and data center growth during the period as more customers turned to artificial intelligence solutions. That contributed to 30% subscription revenue growth over the prior year. Atlassian also said it now expects 26.5% cloud growth and 21.5% data center growth for the fiscal year.

“The momentum we’re seeing across the business reinforces our conviction around investments we are making in our key strategic priorities of serving enterprise customers, AI, and the System of Work to deliver durable, long-term growth,” finance chief Joe Binz said in an earnings release.

The Australian company, known for organization software tool Trello, has made a push into the artificial intelligence race alongside megacap technology competitors in recent years. In 2023, the company tapped OpenAI to bring AI capabilities to its Jira and Confluence solutions. Last year, Atlassian debuted its Rovo AI assistant.

Morgan Stanley’s Keith Weiss cited back-to-back solid quarters and 25 times year-over-year growth in Atlassian Intelligence among the reasons the company should “join the upper echelon” of software companies best situated for generative AI.

“1 million [monthly active users] for Atlassian Intelligence all point to a strong yield against investments in a unified Cloud platform ‘infused with AI’ and an improving enterprise motion. While the valuation gap narrows [after hours], we still see upside in TEAM,” he wrote in a Friday note.

Shares have gained 25% since the start of the year.

Chicago Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon calls out to players during the first half of the team’s WNBA basketball game against the New York Liberty, May 23, 2024, in New York.

Frank Franklin II | AP

Startup basketball league Unrivaled announced on Monday it’s closed a Series A funding round, raising an additional $28 million before its inaugural season.

“Our players haven’t even taken the court yet and the foundation we are building with our partners unites unparalleled expertise, strategic insight, and an incredible product,” Unrivaled President Alex Bazzell said in a press release. “Together, we’re setting the stage for Unrivaled for years to come.”

The 3×3 women’s hoops league already secured $7 million in a seed round announced in May, meaning the league has received $35 million in total funds in 2024. The latest round was led by the Berman family and also included NBA champion Giannis Antetokounmpo and 28-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps, among others.

Unrivaled was co-founded in 2023 by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier and advertises that the player-owned organization will give every Unrivaled player “equity and a vested interest in its success,” according to the press release.

The league has signed 36 top players and said it offers the highest average salaries across any women’s professional sports league.

While the Women’s National Basketball Association has seen exponential growth in the last few years, superstar rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese received base salaries just over $70,000, compared with star rookies in the National Basketball Association who received millions their first year.

Unrivaled announced last week it had signed Under Armour as its official uniform partner. It’s also signed an exclusive, multiyear media rights deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to air its games on TNT and truTV, as well as streaming platform Max. WBD participated in the Series A funding round, the league said Monday.

The round also included private investor Marc Lasry, University of South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley, and USC guard JuJu Watkins. Previous investors include soccer phenom Alex Morgan and actor and investor Ashton Kutcher.

The inaugural season begins on January 17.

Waymo has closed a $5.6 billion funding round to expand its robotaxi service in and beyond Los Angeles, San Francisco and Phoenix, where it operates today.

The autonomous vehicle venture is owned by Google parent Alphabet, which led the series C investment in Waymo, alongside earlier backers including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Fidelity, Perry Creek, Silver Lake, Tiger Global and T. Rowe Price.

In a statement to CNBC, Waymo co-CEOs Tekedra Mawakana and Dmitri Dolgov said the funding would go toward expansion and advancing the Waymo Driver for business applications.

“With this latest investment, we will continue to welcome more riders into our Waymo One ride-hailing service in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, and in Austin and Atlanta through our expanded partnership with Uber,” they wrote.

The series C funding brings Waymo’s total capital raised to more than $11 billion after it raised $3.2 billion and $2.5 billion in two earlier rounds. Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat announced in July that the parent company would commit to a multiyear investment of up to $5 billion in Waymo.

While many companies are testing autonomous vehicles, or AVs, on public roads in the U.S., including well-funded upstarts such as Wayve, Waymo is the only one to operate a commercial robotaxi service in several major metro areas.

The service has been embraced by some women who have safety concerns about riding with unknown human drivers. And it has even been used by parents to send their teens to school when other transit options felt less safe or convenient.

Waymo now conducts more than 100,000 weekly trips for passengers in Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco, who can hail their robotaxis via the Waymo One app. More recently, Waymo partnered with Uber to launch its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas — home of would-be rival Tesla’s headquarters.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made promises about self-driving cars for more than a decade. This week, he said Tesla would offer a driverless ride-hailing service in Texas and California next year, once the company upgrades the partially automated systems in its existing vehicles, which still require a human driver today.

GM-owned Cruise had been Waymo’s closest competitor in the U.S. until it paused operations following an October 2023 incident in San Francisco in which a pedestrian was dragged 20 feet by a Cruise AV, after she was first struck by a human driver in another car. Cruise is working to reinstate its service and also plans to partner with Uber.

Self-driving vehicle makers in the U.S. must still prove their technology is safer to use than taxis and trucks with human drivers. As CNBC previously reported, nearly two-thirds of U.S. respondents to a Pew Research Center survey said they would not want to ride in a driverless passenger vehicle if they had the opportunity.

Waymo’s self-reported data suggests that their vehicles crash “far less often than human drivers on public roads,” according to analysis by Understanding AI author Timothy B. Lee.

Still, Waymo has initiated software recalls to improve the safety of its self-driving systems, and its AVs have sometimes blocked traffic, traveled the wrong way down the street, or been involved in collisions, though none resulted in a known fatality or severe injury.

The next-generation robotaxi from Waymo is a Geely Zeekr that’s equipped with its custom sensors and AI “Driver.” Waymo also recently agreed to a multiyear strategic partnership with Hyundai that will add the South Korean automaker’s Ioniq 5 electric vehicle to its robotaxi fleet.

In August, Waymo said it would also test its driverless vehicles in harsher, winter weather including in northern California, upstate New York and Michigan, with the hope of offering robotaxi services beyond the sunbelt, and eventually internationally.
