The legendary investor behind Berkshire Hathaway – which has large businesses in insurance, railroads, manufacturing, energy and retail – spoke before the president moved forward with implementing 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and 20% on China as of midnight Tuesday.

“Actually, we’ve had a lot of experience with them [tariffs],” Buffett said during an interview with CBS News for a documentary on Katherine Graham, the late Washington Post publisher.

Warren Buffett said President Trump’s tariffs are “an act of war.” AP

“They’re an act of war, to some degree,” he added.

Canada and Mexico had threatened to respond with their own taxes before Trump paused his decision for the levies last month.

Experts have warned the tariffs could reheat inflation, particularly impacting the automotive industry and sending prices for new cars soaring as much as $12,000.

Buffett, the 94-year-old “Oracle of Omaha,” seeming agreed during the CBS News sit-down.

“Over time, they are a tax on goods. I mean, the tooth fairy doesn’t pay ’em!” Buffett said with a laugh.

“And then what? You always have to ask that question in economics. You always say, ‘And then what?’”

Buffett has taken on an increasingly conservative investment strategy – dumping stocks and raising a record amount of cash. REUTERS

Buffett declined to comment on the current state of the economy.

“Well, I think that’s the most interesting subject in the world, but I won’t talk, I can’t talk about it, though. I really can’t,” Buffett said.

An emotional Joy Reid said she’s “not sorry” that she “went hard on so many issues” as the Donald Trump-bashing anchor broke her silence after getting fired by MSNBC.

“I’ve been through every emotion from, you know anger, rage, disappointment….guilt..that I let my team lose their jobs,” Reid rambled during a 10-minute Zoom call to the podcast “Win With Black Women” on Sunday.

The left-wing firebrand has been criticized for her remarks about white people, including referring to “white tears,” as well as a statement that white women “did not show up” to vote for former Vice President Kamala Harris in the recent election.

MSNBC host, Joy Reid, was fired on Sunday, ending her five year-old show “The ReidOut.” YouTube / Win With Black Women

Her attacks led President Trump to cheer her ouster, calling Reid a “mentally obnoxious racist.”

But Reid remained defiant on the podcast, which was watched by some 10,000 viewers.

“I’m not sorry. I am not sorry that I stood up for those those things,” Reid said as she ticked off a list of issues her show, “The ReidOut,” regularly covered, including Black Lives Matter, Asian Americans “being targeted,” Gaza and immigrants.

“But in the end, where I really land… is just gratitude. Just pure gratitude and gratitude. Not just because people would take the time to get on a call like this or to take care of me. But also that my show had value.”

Reid was spotted wearing a fur-like coat and green baseball cap as she ducked out of her $1 million Maryland home in exclusive photos taken by The Post shortly after being fired Sunday.

Reid was photographed on Sunday outside her Maryland home. Aristide Economopoulos for NY Post

Reid’s ouster was part of a broader revamp at the struggling cable station, which shuffled a number of other anchors and canceled shows hosted by Ayman Mohyeldin, Katie Phang and Jonathan Capehart.

The overhaul comes as new MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler, whose interim tag was removed this month, puts her stamp on the network after the exit of Rashida Jones.

A Ferrari-inspired mansion known as Casa Maranello in Delray Beach, Florida, shattered a local record last week when it traded for $50.5 million.

Not only was the megadeal the biggest the area has ever seen, but it was also one of the most unusual: The sale included a mansion swap, bespoke furniture, elaborate chandeliers, art, alcohol and even a miniature Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa sports car.

According to public records, the buyer was a trust linked to William Cafaro, the co-president of a retail property development company in Niles, Ohio. The trust purchased the seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom residence — and paid millions more for all of its furnishings — with a combination of cash and real estate valued at $55 million.

The trust paid the home’s architect and developer, Aldo Stark of Prestige Design Homes, $24.5 million along with the deed to Cafaro’s almost-18,000 square foot mansion located at 9200 Rockybrook Way in Delray Beach, which, according to public record, was valued at $26 million.

“This was a highly complex transaction, involving two mega trophy real estate properties, cash and numerous moving parts with multiple stakeholders,” said listing agent Senada Adzem, who brokered both transactions, but would not go into detail about specifics.

The two mansions sit less than 1,000 feet apart in Delray Beach’s Stone Creek Ranch neighborhood, one of the town’s most luxurious gated communities.

The Rockybrook home that Stark received sits on 2.5 acres and has seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. The developer has already begun making major improvements to the home, and Adzem told CNBC that Stark plans on putting the estate up for sale soon.

“They are incorporating exotic materials, bespoke lighting fixtures and all-new custom furnishings,” she said.

Daniel Petroni Photography

Casa Maranello’s sale price, amounting to more than $2,400 per square foot, breaks the town record of price per area held by the megahome next door called Villa Spectre, also built and designed by Stark.

“Aldo Stark is in a league of his own when it comes to visionary architecture, ultra-luxury design and development,” said Adzem.

The dramatic entry at the James Bond-themed Villa Spectre.

Legendary Productions

The property next door is about the same size and layout of Casa Maranello, but where the latter is Ferrari-inspired — even named for the town in Italy where the luxury automaker is based — the residence at 16161 Quiet Vista Circle is centered around all things James Bond.

Marketing material for Villa Spectre shows the car gallery filled with pricey Aston Martins and a Bond-inspired Rolls-Royce Spectre. Before the home was officially listed for sale, it was purchased last month in an off-market deal.

“The moment the clients stepped inside, they were left speechless,” said Adzem, who also brokered the Villa Spectre sale.

Public records show Villa Spectre traded for $36.8 million. It was also sold fully furnished, so many millions more were paid to Stark for things such as furniture, art, alcohol and the Rolls-Royce, which came from Stark’s personal collection.

According to Adzem, the sum paid for Villa Spectre and all of its furnishings took the total deal value closer to $55 million.

While Adzem would not comment on the buyer’s identities in any of the transactions, records show Villa Spectre was bought by a trust linked to Barry M. Smith, a retired tech CEO.

The architecture of the almost 22,000 square foot megahome takes inspiration from the Italian car maker, including a fountain on the front drive with a prancing bronze horse, reminiscent of Ferrari’s iconic logo.

“At the end of the day, luxury real estate and exotic cars are more than possessions — they’re statements of passion and success,” said Adzem.

The auto gallery includes a chevron-patterned ceiling in walnut, grand chandeliers and parking for 12 cars.

Daniel Petroni Photography

While the home was marketed fully furnished, the millions of dollars worth of Ferraris parked in the 12-car auto gallery were not included in the sale, Adzem said, as most of those sports cars were part of the developer’s private collection.

Stark also parked his miniature red Ferrari — a 75% replica of a vintage Ferrari — in the home’s grand salon. While Casa Maranello’s new owners do not have a Ferrari collection of their own, they paid extra to have Stark leave the six-figure miniature behind.

The shiny red sports car parked in the living room is a 75% scale reproduction of a vintage Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. The mini electric car has a top speed of 50 mph and a price tag upwards of $100,000.

The spacious living area incudes four custom-made Venetian chandeliers, a pair of big-screen monitors and two back-lit coffee tables and consoles made of agate.

Daniel Petroni Photography

The home boasts two massive primary suites, one of them spanning 3,400 square feet with a 1,300 square foot sleeping area, an equal-sized walk-in closet and an 800 square foot stone clad bath.

The en suite bath connects to the mansion’s hair salon and massage room.

Behind a cabinet door is a discrete passageway to the private chef’s kitchen.

Casa Maranello’s drinking lounge came fully stocked with top-shelf alcohol. The 30 foot bar is wrapped in back-lit Brazilian tiger skin onyx with seating for 20 people.

SpaceX’s mega rocket Starship launches for a test flight from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025.

Eric Gay | AP

SpaceX launched the seventh test flight of its Starship rocket on Thursday, but lost communication with the upper stage of the rocket that continues on into space.

The company’s webcast showed data stopped transmitting from Starship about nine minutes into the launch.

“We can confirm that we did lose the ship,” SpaceX senior manager of quality systems engineering Kate Tice said.

SpaceX said in a post on X that the ship broke up during its ascent burn and that it would “continue to review data from today’s flight test to better understand root cause.” In a later statement, the company said “initial data indicates a fire developed” near the tail end of Starship and destroyed the vehicle.

After the rocket lost communication, social media users posted photos and videos of what appeared to be fireballs in the sky near the Caribbean islands. Starship’s launch trajectory takes it due east from Texas, which means the fireballs are likely debris from the rocket breaking apart and reentering the atmosphere.

In a statement, SpaceX said that Starship debris fell “into the Atlantic Ocean within the predefined hazard areas.” The company establishes these potential risk areas with the Federal Aviation Administration before the launch.

The FAA issued a warning to pilots of a “dangerous area for falling debris of rocket Starship,” according to a notice. Multiple flights above the Caribbean diverted and appeared to be turning around, including commercial and cargo planes of JetBlue, Spirit, and FedEx, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware.

“The FAA briefly slowed and diverted aircraft around the area where space vehicle debris was falling. Normal operations have resumed,” the regulator said in a statement.

The airlines did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. As is required for rocket launches, standard air traffic control advisories were in place. Record-breaking demand for both launches and flights means that rockets compete with planes for limited airspace, especially near Florida.

Additionally, the FAA confirmed that it was “assessing” the anomaly that occurred during SpaceX’s Starship flight. The FAA often grounds rockets after midflight failures, requiring that space companies perform a mishap investigation and put in place corrective actions before the regulator issues a new launch license.

The FAA has not received any reports of injuries or property damage from Starship debris, a spokesperson told CNBC.

SpaceX’s mega rocket Starship booster returns to the launch pad during a test flight from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025.

Starship launched from SpaceX’s private “Starbase” facility near Brownsville, Texas, shortly after 5:30 p.m. ET. A few minutes later, the rocket’s “Super Heavy” booster returned to land at the launch site, in SpaceX’s second successful “catch” during a flight. It did not catch the booster on the last flight.

There were no people on board the Starship flight. However, Elon Musk’s company was flying 10 “Starlink simulators” in the rocket’s payload bay and planned to attempt to deploy the satellite-like objects once in space. This would have been a key test of the rocket’s capabilities, as SpaceX needs Starship to deploy its much larger and heavier upcoming generation of Starlink satellites.

While SpaceX didn’t specify what the Starlink simulators were made of, mass simulators are commonly used in rocket vehicle development and are often simple constructions of metal or concrete that weigh roughly the same as the object in question.

Before losing communication, Starship was set to reach space and then travel halfway around the Earth before reentering the atmosphere and splashing down in the Indian Ocean about an hour after liftoff.

As with each previous flight, SpaceX aimed to push development further by assessing additional Starship capabilities, including tests of its heatshield tiles and the trajectory of its intense reentry.

Starship is critical to the company’s plans, even with its $350 billion valuation and already dominant position in the space industry.

Starship is both the tallest and most powerful rocket ever launched. Fully stacked on the Super Heavy booster, Starship stands 403 feet tall and is about 30 feet in diameter. SpaceX has flown the full Starship rocket system on six spaceflight tests so far since April 2023, at a steadily increasing cadence.

The Super Heavy booster, which stands 232 feet tall, is what begins the rocket’s journey to space. At its base are 33 Raptor engines, which together produce 16.7 million pounds of thrust — about double the 8.8 million pounds of thrust of NASA’s Space Launch System rocket, which launched for the first time in 2022.

Starship itself, at 171 feet tall, has six Raptor engines — three for use while in the Earth’s atmosphere and three for operating in the vacuum of space.

The rocket is powered by liquid oxygen and liquid methane. The full system requires more than 10 million pounds of propellant for launch.

The Starship flying on this launch, tagged as Ship 33, also represents a second-generation version of the vehicle, called “Block 2.”

SpaceX noted that the “significant upgrades” to this vehicle include changes to the flaps on the vehicle’s nose, redesigns of its propulsion system to boost performance, an enhanced flight computer, 30 cameras placed along the vehicle for monitoring the rocket and a reinforced heat shield.

Additionally, the booster for this flight attempt features a reused Raptor engine. That engine flew during the fifth test flight last year.

The Starship system is designed to be fully reusable and aims to become a new method of flying cargo and people beyond Earth. The rocket is also critical to NASA’s plan to return astronauts to the moon. SpaceX won a multibillion-dollar contract from the agency to use Starship as a crewed lunar lander as part of NASA’s Artemis moon program.

President Biden has declared his support for banning sitting members of Congress from trading stock — an eleventh-hour pivot after four years of silence over the controversy.

“Nobody in the Congress should be able to make money in the stock market while they’re in the Congress,” Biden told the “More Perfect Union” podcast.

“I don’t know how you look your constituents in the eye and know because of the job they gave you, gave you an inside track to make more money,” Biden said, adding: “I think we should be changing the law.”

President Biden said he supports a ban on members of Congress and their spouses trading stock while in office. AP

The interview was conducted by Faiz Shakir, a political adviser for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and published by A More Perfect Union, a pro-labor advocacy and journalism organization.

It’s unclear what impact Biden’s statement could have, coming only a month before his term ends.

Biden had previously declined to take a position on congressional stock trading.

His fellow Democrat, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, initially opposed proposals that lawmakers and their spouses be banned from trading stocks.

Pelosi, who is married to venture capitalist Paul Pelosi, insisted that her husband makes stock trades independently and that she has no involvement. She said in December 2021 that there is a “free market” that members of Congress “should be able to participate in.”

Speculation about Pelosi’s future in Congress has ramped up in recent days after the 84-year-old congresswoman from San Francisco underwent hip replacement surgery in Europe earlier this week.

Lawmakers have often flouted lax rules that govern stock trading while serving in office. UPI

Pelosi suffered a fall while on a trip to Luxembourg over the weekend, breaking her hip.

Financial disclosure forms showed that Paul Pelosi, who is said to be worth in excess of $275 million, sold 2,000 shares of Visa stock worth between $500,000 and $1 million on July 1. In September, the Justice Department announced it was suing Visa for alleged antitrust violations.

Since 2021, Pelosi has softened her stance amid backlash, coming out in support of strengthening an existing law, the Stock Act, which requires lawmakers to disclose their stock sales and purchases.

She has also called for extending stock trading disclosure requirements to members of the judiciary, while stiffening penalties for members of Congress who flout the rules.

Relations between Biden and Pelosi, who were once close, are said to have been ruptured after the former speaker played a key role in nudging the president from the race earlier this year due to concerns over his age and mental acuity.

Pelosi told news outlets that she intended for the Democrats to stage a quick primary process following Biden’s decision to step aside, but his swift endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris frustrated those plans.

Biden’s support for a ban marks somewhat of a pivot for the president, who has been largely noncommittal on the issue.

When Jen Psaki served as White House press secretary two years ago, she said Biden would “let members of leadership in Congress and members of Congress determine what the rules should be.”

Biden has long declined to take a position on the issue. His fellow Democrat, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, initially opposed a sweeping ban. AFP via Getty Images

A bipartisan proposal to ban trading by members of Congress and their families has dozens of sponsors, but it has not received a vote.

Although lawmakers are required to disclose stock transactions exceeding $1,000, they’re routinely late in filing notices and sometimes don’t file them at all.

Shakir said he admired Biden for having not “gone in early on Google, and Boeing, and Microsoft, and Nvidia, and, you know, Amazon” while he was a US senator from Delaware, a position he held for 36 years.

Biden said he lived on his Senate salary instead of playing the stock market.

Trading in Congress has long been criticized by government watchdogs, who say the access to nonpublic information creates a temptation for lawmakers to prioritize their own finances over the public good.

Public anger has mounted since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, when some lawmakers were caught buying and selling millions of dollars worth of stock after being warned about the coming disruption from the virus.
