Six Flags is rolling out new age restrictions at several parks throughout spring break as the company battles rampant nuisance from its younger customers — sparking mixed reactions among parkgoers.

Six Flags Over Texas requires guests 17 years old and under to be accompanied by an adult over 21 years old, according to the park’s website.

“The safety of our guests and associates has always been a top priority at Six Flags Over Texas,” the new chaperone policy reads.

“In response to increasing incidents of disruptive behavior across the industry and at other entertainment venues, we are implementing enhanced policies to maintain a safe, family-friendly environment.”

Six Flags Over Texas requires guests 17 years old and under to be accompanied by an adult over 21 years old, according to the park’s website. Bloomberg via Getty Images

Chaperones must provide a government-issued photo ID with a date of birth at entry and can not have more than five minors with them at the Arlington, Texas, attraction.

Guests 17 and older may also be required to verify their age, or face being denied entry.

“We believe these updates will help preserve the positive atmosphere that millions of guests have come to expect from Six Flags Over Texas, where families and friends can make lasting memories together.

Other parks within the Six Flags system have similar chaperone policies, requiring guests under 15 to be accompanied by an adult.

Chaperones must provide a government-issued photo ID with a date of birth at entry and can not have more than five minors with them at the Arlington, Texas, attraction.

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, NJ, announced its revised chaperone policy in September 2024,

However, the theme park’s website now shows that guests under 17 must be accompanied by a chaperone.

Great Adventure’s policy goes into effect daily by 4:00 p.m.

“We believe these changes will help ensure that Six Flags Great Adventure continues to have a positive atmosphere where generations of families and friends can gather for a day of safe fun and good food. Millions of guests have counted on us for exactly that, and we will continue to deliver on that promise for generations to come,” the park wrote.

Social media users had mixed emotions over the new policy, with some saying the park was restricting teens’ enjoyment.

“What’s even crazier about this is that you can be 15 and work here but not enjoy the park,” one person commented on Instagram.

“Y’all realize you are glorified daycare for teenagers?” another said.

“Way to ruin the fun!” a third person wrote.

“Good im tired of they ah w these ‘takeovers’” said a fourth.

“Six flags i love you, but this is too strict. This is what teenagers do they go to ride roller coasters and don’t want to always have a parent right there following them around,” wrote another.

Several brawls involving younger crowds have plagued Six Flags parks in recent years.

A gunfight between a group of youngsters and cops sent hundreds of guests running for cover at Six Flags Over Georgia on March 2, 2024.

Police had responded to gunfire during a massive brawl that had been sparked by an “unruly” crowd of people on the park’s opening day.

Officers chased after one of the suspected shooters, 15-year-old Syere Littlefield, into the woods and shot the young gunman.

Littlefield wasn’t seriously wounded but was hit with a slew of charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm under 18 and interference with government property, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

Residents told the outlet they were aware of social media posts that alluded to some teens knowing something was going to occur at the park that night.

The Atlanta-based park has implemented a chaperone policy for guests under 17.

Disney

Shares of movie theater companies soared on Tuesday following a record-breaking Memorial Day Weekend at the domestic box office.

AMC saw its stock jump more than 20%, while shares of Marcus Theatres’ parent company Marcus Corporation climbed 8% and Cinemark stock leaped 2.5%.

It is also more than double the $132 million in ticket sales collected last year during the same period.

“Everything came together at the right time with two eagerly anticipated, positively reviewed tentpoles courting a diverse range of audiences,” said Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory. “This record holiday frame continues a box office winning streak which began in the spring and has now grown into bona fide momentum for what will likely be a $4 billion-plus summer at domestic cinemas thanks to a string of promising blockbusters on the slate.”

AMC, Cinemark and Marcus Theatres each posted their best Memorial Day Weekend ticket revenues of all time, as well as record food and beverage sales for the holiday.

“Finally it would appear that our industry has turned a corner,” Adam Aron, CEO of AMC, said in a statement. “Since early April, weekend after weekend, moviegoers have been demonstrating their preference for theatrical moviegoing. A record-setting Memorial Day holiday is yet another sign of the continued strength and relevance of moviegoing in 2025.”

“Lilo & Stitch” tallied $183 million during the four-day frame, leading the pack, while the eighth installment in the Mission Impossible franchise scooped up $77 million. “Final Destination Bloodlines” took in $23.9 million, “Thunderbolts*” added $11.8 million and “Sinners” snared $11 million, Comscore reported.

The combination of new product and strong carryover from previously released films fueled the weekend, Chad Paris, chief financial officer at Marcus Corp, told CNBC.

“This is the first time this year where I would say we’ve had a fulsome amount of product for the weekend,” he said. “And we’re now getting into the stretch in the calendar where we’ll have a steady cadence of product releases and across genres, a lot of different products for people to go see.”

Over the summer period, which ends Labor Day Weekend, the domestic box office will see the release of Universal’s live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon,” a new Disney and Pixar feature “Elio,” the hotly anticipated “Jurassic World Rebirth,” Warner Bros.’ “Superman” reboot, and Disney and Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”

In between these tentpoles are a slew of low-and-mid budget films across genres like horror, drama, comedy and sports.

“Every other studio and every other movie on the horizon over the next few weeks are going to ride a wave and benefit from the performance of the past couple of months,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “We’re going to have one hell of a summer and if Memorial Weekend is any indication, we’re certainly looking at a $4 billion plus summer at potentially $4.2 billion plus and that’s great news after a summer of 2024 that failed to reach that milestone.”

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of Fandango, NBCUniversal and CNBC.

Last summer, a federal judge, Amit P. Mehta, delivered a landmark ruling that found Google had illegally dominated online search.

“Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” he wrote.

Now, Judge Mehta has to figure out how to fix Google’s monopoly. His decision will be informed by a three-week hearing, which starts Monday in U.S. District Court in Washington, where the government and Google will argue over how to restore competition in online search.

The Justice Department wants Judge Mehta to break up Google by forcing the company to sell its Chrome browser, which could cut off a source of information it uses to improve its internet search. The department also wants to make the Silicon Valley giant hand over some of its most precious data to rivals, which could help their competing products.

In contrast, Google has asked the judge to only slightly restrict its ability to make deals to give its search engine prime placement on browsers and in smartphones.

The outcome could reshape the $1.86 trillion company, which has become synonymous with how people look for information online. Google faces mounting challenges, including the prospect of a breakup in a second antitrust case after a different federal judge ruled on Thursday that it had illegally maintained a monopoly in some ad technology. That puts Google in perhaps its most vulnerable position since Larry Page and Sergey Brin created the business in 1998.

Its fate could shake up Silicon Valley as the biggest companies fight to own a new technology era defined by artificial intelligence. Any restrictions on Google could hamper its ability to compete with OpenAI, Microsoft, Meta and others as search is increasingly powered by A.I. tools that can summarize research and offer humanlike guidance.

“The D.O.J.’s been very aggressive in what they’ve asked for,” said Rebecca Haw Allensworth, a law professor at Vanderbilt University who studies antitrust. “They’ve essentially asked for the moon.”

A breakup of Google would be the most significant action taken by a court against a monopoly since a federal judge tried and failed to split Microsoft in half 25 years ago. It has been even longer since the federal government successfully divided up a company over its dominance. The last time was New Year’s Day 1984, when AT&T cleaved itself into eight companies as part of an antitrust settlement reached with the Justice Department two years earlier.

Judge Mehta’s decision could influence other tech antitrust cases. Since 2020, the Justice Department has twice accused Google of violating antitrust laws and sued Apple for making it difficult for users to ditch their iPhones. Meta is in the second week of an antitrust trial over whether it illegally stifled competition, while Amazon is grappling with a lawsuit that accuses it of squeezing the small merchants that use its site.

“At trial we will show how D.O.J.’s unprecedented proposals go miles beyond the court’s decision, and would hurt America’s consumers, economy and technological leadership,” said Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google’s vice president for regulatory affairs.

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department declined to comment.

The Justice Department and a group of states filed the lawsuit over Google’s search business in 2020, during President Trump’s first term. The case went to trial in 2023 under the Biden administration, which demanded that Google be broken up. Mr. Trump’s administration has maintained that aggressive stance and continued to scrutinize the tech giants.

The case, U.S. v. Google, concerns payments that Google made to companies like Apple, Mozilla and Samsung to be the search engine that appeared automatically in web browsers and on the home screens of smartphones. Google paid those companies $26.3 billion in 2021, the court heard during the trial.

Government lawyers argued at the trial that the deals created a powerful cycle to benefit Google. The prime placement of the company’s search engine meant more people used it to find information, generating data that Google could then use to make its search engine better and further entrenching its dominance, they said.

Judge Mehta largely agreed with the government and ruled in August that Google had violated the law. He is expected to order the remedies in the case by the end of the summer.

Last year, the Justice Department asked Judge Mehta to stop Google from making the multibillion-dollar deals to be the default search engine.

The government’s proposal also went further. It argued that forcing Google to sell Chrome could deny the company a valuable source of traffic to its search engine. Any time a Chrome user enters a query directly into the browser’s search bar, it goes to Google. If the company spun off the browser, that prime placement would not be guaranteed.

The Justice Department also said it might want to force Google to spin off Android, the smartphone operating system, if the court’s actions failed to improve competition among search engines.

In addition, the government asked the judge to take steps that would give Google’s competitors a more direct boost. Under the proposal, search engines like DuckDuckGo and Microsoft’s Bing could take Google’s search results and ads and display them directly to their own users. Google would also have to hand over data about what terms people search for and what websites they click, which rivals could use to improve their own systems.

Google has argued that not much needs to change. It told Judge Mehta that it should still be allowed to pay Apple and others for its search engine to get top placement. But it also said browser makers should have the option to call off their deals with Google once a year. Those companies should be able to select different automatic search engines for different features, like a private browsing mode. Under Google’s proposal, smartphone manufacturers would have more freedom to decide what Google apps to install on their phones.

The hearing is expected to feature testimony from Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, as well as executives from Google’s partners, like Apple and Mozilla.

Rivals are watching. Kamyl Bazbaz, the senior vice president of public affairs for DuckDuckGo, said it was taking a wait-and-see approach, since Google has promised to appeal Judge Mehta’s ruling.

“There isn’t a single thing to do right now to actually prepare, besides getting ready to watch the case really closely,” Mr. Bazbaz said. What is decided, he added, could change “nothing less than how everybody uses the internet.”

President Donald Trump’s proposed $5 million “gold card” for U.S. residency would be one the most expensive in the world, according to experts.

Yet it also includes a tax loophole that would give the new-card holders a lucrative benefit not available to American citizens, experts say.

Trump this week announced the creation of a new investment visa that gives the overseas wealthy permanent residency and a path to citizenship in return for $5 million. Attorneys who advise the wealthy on migration and investment visas say demand is already strong.

“The introduction of the gold card visa program represents a unique opportunity for high-net-worth individuals looking to secure U.S. residence with a pathway to citizenship,” said Dominic Volek, head of private clients at Henley & Partners. “The U.S. remains the undisputed leader in private wealth creation and accumulation.”

Volek and others who cater to the global rich say they’ve already fielded calls from clients wanting to purchase a Trump gold card. Approximately 135,000 of the world’s millionaires are projected to migrate to a new country in 2025, according to Henley. The United Arab Emirates and the U.S. typically top the list of destinations.

“I think it’s going to sell like crazy,” Trump said at his first Cabinet news conference Wednesday. “It’s a bargain.”

While the details remain unclear, the proposal would radically change the U.S. residency path for the global rich, who currently have to navigate a patchwork of programs with tight restrictions to stay in the country. It would also mark a major potential tax change for the global rich living in the U.S., carving out a new loophole for gold-card holders.

Currently, U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and green-card holders are required to pay income tax on their U.S. earnings as well as any income they earn overseas, including in their home country. The U.S. tax on worldwide income has traditionally made U.S. residency or citizenship far less attractive for the global rich, who have businesses spread across the world and often sheltered in tax havens.

Trump said gold-card holders would not be subject to taxes on their overseas income. The provision means that gold-card residents will be able to purchase a tax benefit not available to U.S. citizens. Advisors say they’re waiting on clearer directives, since the program could create dual classes of taxpayers among the American wealthy.

Yet the international income carve-out makes it far more attractive to the world’s ultra-wealthy.

“This would be a big departure” in tax treatment, said Laura Foote Reiff, an attorney at Greenberg Traurig who specializes in business immigration. “There are many wealthy individuals who are invested in U.S. companies or have families here that do not become permanent residents because they don’t want the tax consequences.”

The tax loophole is one reason the government can charge a premium for the gold card. At $5 million, the program would be among the most expensive in the world. Volek said Singapore’s Global Investor Program requires an investment of 10 million Singapore dollars, or about $7.5 million. New Zealand’s most expensive program requires an investment of up to 10 million New Zealand dollars, or about $5.7 million.

Most investment visa programs around the world cost less than $1 million, attorneys say.

About 100 countries offer some type of investment visa program, with about 60 jurisdictions actively promoting their programs, according to Henley. Roughly 30 programs dominate the $20 billion a year investment migration business, with Malta, the UAE, Portugal, Italy and several jurisdictions in the Caribbean being the most popular.

At Wednesday’s news conference, Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the U.S. gold card would replace the current investment visa program, called EB-5, which offers green cards to those who invest at least $900,000 or $1.8 million, depending on the area and project. The EB-5 program been plagued by delays and a history of fraud and abuse. The program was renewed by Congress in 2022 with major changes that required the investments to be channeled to more rural, poor areas and to infrastructure projects.

When it comes to applicants, China has been far and away the largest source of those seeking EB-5 visas, with Taiwan, Vietnam and India also ranking high. The U.S. issued just more than 12,000 EB-5 visas last year, with two-thirds going to Chinese nationals, according to the State Department.

The wealthy Chinese are also the dominant users of investment visa programs around the world, including in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

While Trump said the U.S. could sell a million gold cards, attorneys say the likely demand is a fraction of that total – perhaps thousands but not hundreds of thousands. There are about 424,000 people in the world worth $30 million or more, with 148,000 of them in the U.S., leaving about 277,000 overseas ultra-wealthy who could reasonably afford the program.

Yet only a small fraction of them would likely apply to live in the U.S., immigration attorneys say. Last year, the U.S. had a net inflow of about 3,800 millionaires according to Henley.

“Hundreds of thousands sounds high,” Foote Reiff said. “There may be businesses that would pay to bring in top talent, like research scientists that they want to bring here and not be subject to quotas.”

One big draw of the new program is tax benefits. Historically, permanent residents in the U.S. have to pay income tax on their U.S. earnings as well as any income they earn overseas, including in their home country. The U.S. tax on worldwide income makes it far less attractive for the global rich who have businesses spread across the world and often sheltered in tax havens.

Trump said he expects the biggest demand will be from companies (especially in tech, like Apple) seeking to hire top college graduates in the U.S. who come from India, China or other countries but can’t get proper visas.
