More pain for the Bay Area tech sector as another company announces layoffs — this time a staggering 23% of the workforce.

The San Mateo action-based camera maker GoPro will let nearly a quarter of its workforce around the world go by the second quarter of 2026, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange commission.

The company, which first launched its camera line in the early 2000s, plans to cut some 145 jobs globally, representing 23% of the company’s ending first quarter head count of 631 employees, per the filing.

The San Mateo-based action camera company GoPro is slashing jobs. Getty Images

The cuts are expected to be completed by the end of the year, the filing read.

The move comes after GoPro’s Board of Directors approved a restructuring plan on April 7 to “reduce operating costs and drive stronger operating leverage.”

“Restructuring Plan is expected to cost the tech company between $11.5 million and $15 million. The costs include one time benefits payouts to those “affected employees, including but not limited to severance payments and healthcare benefits,” the filing noted.

The cuts are expected to effect some 145 jobs globally. Bloomberg via Getty Images

An article in November 2025, noted that GoPro sales had declined by nearly 37% year over year.

Despite the drop, CEO Nicolas Woodman put a positive spin on the way things stood at the time.

“Q3 marked a meaningful step forward in our strategy to diversify, grow, and restore profitability to GoPro’s business,” Woodman said. “We successfully launched three new TAM-expanding hardware products — our MAX2 360 camera, LIT HERO camera and Fluid Pro AI gimbal — alongside several new software offerings. We expect to return to revenue growth and profitability beginning Q4 2025 and in 2026.”

The cuts are expected to slash nearly a quarter of the company’s workforce. Getty Images/iStockphoto

Several people commented on a Reddit Post about the job cuts.

“Another round of layoffs (not to be confused with the previous layoffs, this is new). This is a brutal time to be laid off, I hope they land on their feet,” one person wrote. “This is 100% on Nick Woodman. He should have been laid off years ago.”

Another added, “Might be a good move for them, everyone laying off, thousands of employees, they just following the trend. For investors it sounds appealing.”

“Salaries cut off, new cameras + new processor at NBA Show -> Their stock will probably jump a lot on the next few weeks. So with this changes + new revenue if the launch is a success, might actually save them as a company.”

A November 2025 report said sales were down year over year. Vladimir Razgulyaev – stock.adobe.com

On Tuesday, it was announced that some 700 workers at another Bay Area tech company, Oracle, would be out of work by June statewide.

The statewide tally along with another nearly 500 firings in Seattle, is part of the software maker’s recently announced bloodbath that is reportedly in the thousands of jobs.

Last month, a 6 a.m. email message was sent out to workers notifying fired employees that they were out.

The message from one of the world’s largest software companies, chaired by billionaire Larry Ellison, informed “thousands” of workers across the globe that March 31 would be their last day.

Two people familiar with the matter confirmed to CNBC that the layoffs involved thousands of jobs.

It’s the latest Bay Area tech company to gut its workforce globally. Getty Images

Oracle told The California Post that it would decline comment when asked about how many jobs were being cut.

As of May 2025, the software company employed around 162,0000 full-time employees, according to its annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The California Post reached out to GoPro for further comment.

US stocks surged Wednesday morning as oil plunged near $90 after President Trump said he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran — paving the way to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average had soared 1,389 points, or 3%, as of 9:38 a.m. ET, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures jumped 2.5% and 3.2%, respectively.

Brent crude oil prices dropped 16.6% to $91.09 a barrel – its lowest price in nearly a month after news that Iran would allow the temporary safe passage of ships through the strait, a vital maritime route for 20% of the world’s oil supply.

US stock futures surged Wednesday morning as oil plunged near $90 a barrel. AFP via Getty Images

West Texas Intermediate crude also fell 5.6% to $70.94 a barrel.

In a Truth Social post Tuesday evening, less than two hours before Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the strait or face a bombardment of its power plants and bridges, the president announced a “double sided” two-week ceasefire.

“I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump wrote, adding that the ceasefire was subject to the “COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.”

“We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” he added.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said in a statement that it has agreed to reopen the strait for two weeks, though it emphasized it was not a full-fledged peace agreement. Israel also reportedly agreed to the ceasefire.

“Wall Street is exhaling as President Trump pressed pause on the destruction button, as there are enough signs that there’s a will to negotiate a deal, and that optimism is helping to end this stock market correction,” Robert Edwards, chief investment officer at Edwards Asset Management, said in a note Wednesday.

“Even with this optimism, oil prices and stocks are still inversely correlated for the time being,” Edwards added. “It’s unclear how long these declines in oil will last, but it’s looking more likely that the spike in oil prices in recent weeks was indeed temporary.”

Trump wrote in a Wednesday morning Truth Social post that as part of the ceasefire, the US will work with Iran to “dig up and remove all of the deeply buried (B-2 Bombers) Nuclear ‘Dust’” – adding to market optimism.

Traders are eager for the free flow of crude through the Persian Gulf to resume – but analysts have warned that oil prices could remain elevated, since it will take time and money to repair damages at Middle East energy facilities hit in air strikes.

Energy supply shocks tend to ripple through consumer prices, so there are concerns that stubbornly high oil costs could reheat inflation and keep interest rates high.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell has said there is no need for an interest rate hike, and odds for an interest-rate cut jumped Wednesday morning following news of the ceasefire.

United Airlines new Polaris seat on one of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners

Leslie Josephs/CNBC

Does it matter where you sit if you’re sipping Champagne in first class? United Airlines is betting that for some travelers looking for luxury at a discount, it doesn’t.

The carrier is launching new, cheaper tiers for its top-end Polaris and premium economy cabins that come with many of the same perks — but plenty of restrictions too.

Starting this spring, United will offer “Base” Polaris fares which will include a spot in the airline’s long-haul business class cabins featuring lie-flat seats, but will charge those customers extra for advanced seat selection.

The new ticket class will also come with only one checked bag instead of two, and with access to the United Club airport lounge but not the higher-end Polaris lounge, which include showers and other plush features. Ticket changes aren’t allowed.

Read more about airlines’ race to win over big spenders

The other categories for Polaris will be “Standard” and the more expensive “Flexible” option that allows for customers to pay up for the new, more spacious Polaris Studio suites.

The new fares show that United — and perhaps soon, other airlines — are dividing up the front of the plane into smaller categories, just as they have with coach over the past decade, from restrictive basic economy tickets to extra legroom fares.

United’s new strategy comes as it overhauls its nearly decade-old Polaris class with new suites that feature sliding doors and bigger screens, while customers continue to show their willingness to pay more to fly in better seats. United and its competitors have been racing to add more premium seating on its planes, sometimes removing some economy seats to do so.

A spokeswoman for United said customers in Base Polaris would get the same meals — including ice cream — as other passengers in the cabin. She declined to say what the price differences between the fares will be, but said the Base Polaris fare is meant to be an entry-level point for the premium class.

United is also launching similar segmentation for its premium economy class, Premium Plus.

The new options will be available in certain markets starting this month and will expand to other international and long-haul domestic markets later this year, United said.

Rival Delta Air Lines last year said it was also considering segmenting front-of-the-plane cabins.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s product and business chief, announced several leadership changes on Friday and revealed she is taking a significant medical leave because of a worsening neuroimmune condition.

OpenAI hired Simo in May, and she told staffers in a memo on Friday that her condition, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or POTS, relapsed a few weeks before she started in the role. She said the past month has been “particularly rough health-wise,” and she decided she needs to take several weeks off to recover.

“For my entire time here, I’ve postponed medical tests and new therapies to stay completely focused on the job and not miss a single day of work,” Simo wrote in the memo, which was viewed by CNBC. “I took time off for the first time two weeks before the break for some medical tests, and it’s now clear that I’ve pushed a little too far and I really need to try new interventions to stabilize my health.”

In an interview with CNBC in March, Simo said she was diagnosed with POTS in 2019, and she saw more than 40 specialists as she tried to understand her condition. Patients with POTS have difficulty keeping their blood pressure steady, which can cause symptoms like dizziness, fatigue and chest pains, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The condition can be challenging for health-care providers to diagnose.

Simo joined OpenAI after serving as CEO of Instacart, and she previously spent more than a decade in a number of leadership roles at Meta.

OpenAI President Greg Brockman will oversee product in Simo’s absence, she said. Simo also announced that Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer, will transition to a new role focused on “special projects.” He will report directly to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Denise Dresser, the company’s chief revenue officer, will take over most of Lightcap’s responsibilities and report directly to Simo. Dresser will not oversee Lightcap’s government or OpenAI for Countries work, which is now being folded under the company’s strategy organization.

Additionally, Simo announced that Kate Rouch, OpenAI’s marketing chief, has decided to step down to focus on her cancer recovery. Rouch was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer roughly a year and a half ago, right after she stepped into her role at OpenAI.

“I love this job. I love this team. Which is exactly why I didn’t step away and did both — lead at OpenAI while going through intense cancer treatment,” Rouch wrote in a post on LinkedIn. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. At a certain point, you have to be honest about your limits. I’ve reached mine.”

Simo said Rouch will return to a more narrowly-scoped role when her health allows, and OpenAI will lead a search for her replacement.

“We have a strong leadership team focused on our biggest priorities: advancing frontier research, growing our global user base of nearly 1 billion users, and powering enterprise use cases,” an OpenAI spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re well-positioned to keep executing with continuity and momentum.”

The initiative marks a collaboration between the CID’s Casino Crime Investigation Branch (CCIB) and the National Council on Problem Gambling. The migrant workers who are selected to join in this role are called C.a.N ambassadors.

A new cohort of C.a.N Ambassadors has been appointed to combat gambling-related crimes and addiction among migrant workers in Singapore.https://t.co/OmfNrkgpY5#spfpolicelife

— Singapore Police Force (@SingaporePolice) January 30, 2026

Those who apply have to undergo an interview and are then assessed on a number of criteria and they are required to work in Singapore for more than two years. Once named an ambassador, they are then trained to educate about problematic gambling behaviors.

They also share crime prevention advisories with the CCIB’s guidance and help guide peers towards available support, including casino self-exclusion. The people selected must participate in at least one outreach session at dormitories or recreational centers during their two-year term.

It was on 18 January when 46 ambassadors were recognized, with 24 being reappointed and 22 newly appointed.

Singapore Police’s first ambassador program to help educate on gambling risks took place in 2022

It was in 2022 when 40-year-old Mr Abul Bossain Tuhin joined the inaugural ambassador program which was spearheaded by the Singapore Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department to spread awareness about responsible gambling.

He has said that scenes of migrant workers crying outside a casino when he left a night shift broke his heart and made him realize that he had to do something to help stop the vicious cycle. The man has now been serving as a C.a.N ambassador for the past four years.

Speaking about the program, Mr Tuhin said: “It’s really meaningful for me because so many of my fellow countrymen don’t know how to solve their problems,” Mr Tuhin said.

At the ceremony where the new ambassadors were present, along with representatives from partner agencies, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Eugene Wang, Assistant Director of the CID’s Specialised Crime Division, expressed his appreciation to those who have joined the program.

“We’ve encountered cases where migrant workers were arrested for casino-related crimes and it’s heartbreaking to see them repatriated after serving their sentence,” he said. “They lose not only their hard-earned salaries but also future employment opportunities in Singapore.”

The Ministry of the Interior of Finland has announced a raft of changes to operator license fees as part of the incoming 2027 Gambling Act.

This update comes in a substantial year for legal reform in the Scandinavian nation, with the breakup of the longstanding state-owned gambling operator Veikkaus Oy.

Finland will now move to a more competitive model under the new Gambling Act, and the reform aims to shift licensing away from the established one-track norm under Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s government.

Finland announces new operator license fees

As part of a statement, the Finnish Ministry of the Interior outlined the changes operators must implement to offer legally approved wagering.

The regulator has also stated that there will be a timeframe for these applications. As we reported, they will come into force on March 1, 2026, and close on December 31, 2026.

Finland to open some gambling services to competition https://t.co/uoZJbZRTDL

— Finnish Government (@FinGovernment) January 15, 2026

According to the post, the fees to hold an exclusive licence and a gambling licence will cost EUR 29,000 ($34,000), and any alterations made by a holder will result in a EUR 1,120 ($1,330) fee.

The major aim, says the overseer, is to further regulate all forms of gambling and eliminate routes for illegal operators to flourish, however, compared to other nations, the fee is lower.

This could be an attempt to drive or incentivise private ownership, as established open markets in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom are higher.

The National Police Board to hand over regulation

The open market will be strictly managed, the statement says, with tight supervision of certain forms of gambling offered to private operators when this goes live in July 2027.

Another substantial change will be the regulation and application process switching from the National Police Board, which will remain in post until mid-2027, to the new Supervisory Agency model.

Regardless of the regulatory body, Finland will adopt a unique hybrid model that firmly keeps Lotteries, casino locations, physical slot machines, and scratch cards under public regulation, whilst sports and other online licenses will be up for grabs.

A pedestrian passes in front of the Saks Fifth Avenue at Brookfield Place in New York.

Allison Joyce | Bloomberg | Getty Images

Saks Global named a new CEO on Friday as the retailer is reportedly on the cusp of filing for bankruptcy protection.

The parent of high-end department store chain Saks Fifth Avenue, which is privately held, will now be led by Richard Baker, the company’s executive chairman, Saks said in a news release. He will continue to hold the executive chairman role.

With the shake-up, three-decade long Saks executive Marc Metrick will leave the company. The news release said Metrick’s is departing “to pursue new opportunities.”

In a statement, Baker said he will work “to secure a strong and stable future for our company.”

“Across Saks Global, with our deep industry expertise, well-established relationships within the luxury sector, and talented employees, we will strengthen our position so that we can capitalize on the many opportunities we see for our company in the luxury market,” he said.

Saks is preparing to file for bankruptcy after missing a debt payment related to its 2024 acquisition of department store chain Neiman Marcus, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

It’s the latest twist in the luxury department store operator’s effort to regain its financial footing. Saks Global was created in 2024 after Saks Fifth Avenue parent company Hudson’s Bay Co. acquired Neiman Marcus for $2.65 billion. By marrying the two luxury chains, it sought to better compete with other retailers and department stores including Nordstrom and Macy’s-owned Bloomingdale’s.

The deal turned Saks Global into a larger player, which included Saks Fifth Avenue, its off-price chain Saks Off 5th, Neiman Marcus’ namesake department store chain and Bergdorf Goodman.

Yet the company has taken clear steps to raise cash and shore up its finances, including the recent sale of Neiman Marcus’ Beverly Hills flagship and Saks Global’s debt restructuring in August 2025.

In his biography on Saks Global’s website, the company credited Baker for leading the acquisition of Neiman Marcus and described his strong real estate background. Baker is an owner of National Realty & Development Corp., one of the largest real estate development companies in the United States, and he previously served as the chairman of the board of directors for Retail Opportunity Investments Corp., which he also converted into a real estate investment trust listed on the Nasdaq.

The NBCC has been operating since 1974, hoping to advance a national conversation around critically discussing and sharing literature.
Last year, the NBCC shared their longlists for each category for the first time in their 50 years of presenting the awards. They’re continuing the tradition this year. Throughout this week, we’ll be treated to an array of finalists in the six categories of criticism, fiction, autobiography, biography, poetry, and nonfiction. There are two additional categories awarded annually as well, as voted on by members: the John Leonard Prize for the best debut book in any genre and the Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize, for the best book of any genre translated into English and published in the United States.

Today, the NBCC announced their Longlist for Criticism. These are books that range in theme and topic, from film writing to memoir, essays and more.

Google has recently announced an expansion of its Gambling and Games policy on Wednesday (November 19). It comes only weeks after the tech giant changed how it classified sweepstakes casino games, which are no longer considered social games. As a result, new rules now apply.

Restrictions on offline gaming advertisements will come into effect for 35 countries where these promotions violate the local laws.

In its updated policy, Google states that “promotion of offline gambling is prohibited in locations where it is illegal to advertise offline gambling.”

These locations include: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Bulgaria, China, Djibouti, Egypt, Estonia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Lithuania, Malaysia, the Maldives, Morocco, Northern Ireland, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sudan, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Yemen.

These changes will come into effect immediately, which suggests Google advertisers must be wary when checking their geographic targets in the coming days and weeks.

This isn’t the first time Google has updated its ad policy in 2025 to become more stringent regarding gambling advertisements.

Google has announced several Gambling Policy updates throughout 2025

Earlier this year, Google announced a major update to its Gambling and Games advertising policy, which was to come into effect from April 11.

That update was introduced to clarify exactly what constitutes gambling-related content, as well as to further improve enforcement methods that prevent potential violations.

With repeated violations of the gambling advertisement policy, permanent bans would come into operation as Google looked to crack down on those failing to comply with the new regulations.

There were further updates regarding the Gambling and Games policy in countries such as Angola, the Philippines and in specific US states, with ads being accepted for online horse racing across states including: Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, North Carolina, Vermont and Washington.

All of these previous updates were announced in February 2025, and the latest one could be the final policy change of the calendar year.
