You’re reading the calendar right: we’re only halfway through October, but the Best Books of the Year list season is upon us, starting with Barnes & Noble. They’ve named their picks for the best books of 2025 in 19 categories: Fiction, Gift Books, Mystery & Thriller Books, Biographies & Memoirs, Picture Books, Young Reader (Middle Grade) Books, Young Adult, Science Fiction & Fantasy, History Books, Horror, Romance, Cookbooks, Business Books, Sports Books, Personal Development, Science & Technology, eBook Series, Audiobooks, and libros en español.

The categories reflect the source as a bookstore; it’s easy to see why Gift Books is one of the first categories listed. There are more nonfiction categories than we’re likely to see in other Best Books of the Year lists. The odd category out is “eBook Series.” Perhaps the original intention was “Best eBooks” to match “Best Audiobooks,” but there isn’t the same consideration of format for eBooks—while an audiobook’s quality is heavily dependent on the narrator, the reading experience for an ebook is almost indistinguishable from print. This “eBook Series” category lets Barnes & Noble show that you can buy ebooks from them, but it doesn’t make much sense from a reader perspective.

Here is a selection of the Barnes & Noble picks for the best books of 2025:

The Best Fiction of 2025: The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong and Atmosphere: A Love Story by Taylor Jenkins Reid

The Best Mystery & Thriller Books of 2025: The Secret of Secrets by Dan Brown and King of Ashes by S. A. Cosby

The Best Biographies & Memoirs of 2025: Mother Mary Comes to Me by Arundhati Roy and 107 Days by Kamala Harris

The Best Science Fiction & Fantasy of 2025: Katabasis by R. F. Kuang and Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V. E. Schwab

The Best Horror Books of 2025: The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones and You Weren’t Meant to Be Human by Andrew Joseph White

The Best Romance Books of 2025: Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry and Flirting Lessons by Jasmine Guillory

The Best Science & Technology Books of 2025: Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green and Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman’s OpenAI by Karen Hao

The Best Audiobooks of 2025: The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar, narrated by Gem Carmella and The Devil Reached Toward the Sky: An Oral History of the Making and Unleashing of the Atomic Bomb by Garrett M. Graff, narrated by Edoardo Ballerini and a full cast

The finalists for the Booker Prize 2025 have been announced! These six novels include three authors shortlisted for the prize for the first time, as well as a previous Booker Prize winner.

The Booker Prize honors the best work of fiction written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland annually. It began in 1969 and has become an honor that can catapult a book and author’s career. The winner of the Booker Prize takes home £50,000, or about $67,000 USD.

Five judges comprise the panel that determines the finalists. They include authors, publishers, journalists, politicians, artists, and more. Books published between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025, are eligible, and this time frame starts to hint at the kinds of books we might begin to see making “best of” and other honor lists throughout the rest of the year.

The finalists include authors from three continents representing four nationalities. Their stories take place in Hungary, Japan, Italy, the United States, India, and England. The shortest book on the shortlist is under 200 pages, while the longest is over 700.

The WNBA announced on Monday it has awarded three new expansion teams to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia, growing the league to 18 teams over the next five years.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert called it a “truly monumental day” for the league.

“These are powerful cities filled with passionate fan bases,” she said. “This is a bold step forward as we grow our footprint.”

The league currently has 13 teams, with franchises in Toronto and Portland set to join in 2026.

The Cleveland team will begin play in 2028, followed by Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030. Engelbert declined to comment on the franchise fees each team will have to pay to join the league but said the fees have reached historic levels.

“Today marks a transformative day in Cleveland’s sports history,” said Nic Barlage, CEO of the Rock Entertainment Group, which owns the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers and other professional sports teams in the city.

This would not be Cleveland’s first foray into professional women’s basketball. The city hosted one of the WNBA’S original franchises, the Cleveland Rockers from 1997 to 2003. That team folded after seven seasons as the team’s owner, Gordon Gund, cited low attendance and said he could not find a way to make the team profitable.

“This is a huge win for our city,” said Arn Tellem, the vice chairman of the Detroit Pistons basketball franchise. “It’s much bigger than basketball.”

The Detroit team will return women’s basketball to the city after a roughly two-decade hiatus. The Detroit Shock played from 1998 to 2009, winning three championships and setting records for attendance before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Representing Philly, Josh Harris, co-founder and managing partner of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, said bringing the WNBA to the city “wasn’t just a nice-to-have, it was an obligation.”

‘Book Boyfriends’ and ‘Shadow Daddies’: the men cashing in on Romantasy

I called Peak Adaptation way too many times. I have done the same with Booktok writ large. I am not making the same mistake with Romantasy. That said, elaborate costume balls that pay dark-haired dudes thousands of dollars to cosplay as fantasy book characters is really testing my resolve. Question: does the market for these events dry up if/when there is a big-time adaptation of one of the major series? Or does it heighten it? And what is the IP/copyright situation here? Does the Renaissance fair community know about this? Is there someone with a turkey leg and a flimsy set of armor sweltering in a fairground somewhere, not realizing they missed the boat on these?

Book Riot has been doing what we do since 2011: recommending buzzy and under-the-radar books, reporting on headlines from the world of books and publishing, and bringing you progressive, feminist, inclusive bookish content.

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more.

Here are the Finalists for the International Booker Prize

A couple of interesting features of the 2025 finalists. First: they are short, with the longest topping out at 278 pages and most of them even under 200 pages. Perhaps relatedly, all the selection were published by independent presses (aka not big 5). This is both a surprise and not: we are accustomed to major awards nominees coming from the big houses except in one field: translation. So, here we are.

Printed Books Seem to Be Exempt From Tariffs. But Probably Not Paper.

Publisher’s Lunch (sub req.) does the dirty work of finding the documentation that shows that books printed in other countries are exempt from the current tariff plans, but notably paper itself is not. Quite a bit of paper comes from overseas, which weirdly might have the strange effect of these tariffs making printing overseas more cost-efficient than importing paper and printing the books in the U.S. Not sure which move this is in 3D chess.

Most Americans want to read more books. We just don’t.

I’m trying to parse exactly which results in this NPR/Ipsos poll support the headline claim. Maybe the 63% of respondents who say they want to be a better reader? Better is not necessarily more, though. Weirdly, there is not a question that asks directly “would you like to read more books than you currently do?” or something of the like. Still, quite a few fascinating results, along with some frustrating ones. 41% of respondents said that that audiobooks don’t count as reading, so I guess we still have to keep shouting that yes, yes they do.

Our own Liberty Hardy writes an appreciation and retrospective of Ishiguro’s masterwork. One of the few books I have no hesitation calling a modern classic.

The finalists for the 2025 PEN/Faulkner Award have been announced. The award honors the best fiction by permanent American residents within a calendar year. For this 45th iteration of the award, three writers—Bruce Holsinger, Deesha Philyaw, and Luis Alberto Urrea—were chosen to serve as judges. They whittled down the potential award winners to a ten-book-long list, and now they’ve shortened the list further into five books. Finally, in a ceremony on May 15, 2025, they will announce a winner who they deem to be “the first among equals.”

Below are the five finalists.

Ghostroots by ‘Pemi Aguda

Behind You Is the Sea by Susan Muaddi Darraj

James by Percival Everett

Small Rain by Garth Greenwell

Colored Television by Danzy Senna

The 45th Annual PEN/Faulkner Award Celebration will take place at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C., on May 15 this year. It will feature presentations by PEN/Faulkner judges, original readings by the winner and finalists, and a celebration of this year’s PEN/Faulkner Literary Champion, Dr. Carla Hayden.

The winner of the prize will receive $15,000, while each of the finalists gets $5,000.
