Amazon’s latest round of brutal layoffs included several hundred employees in New York, The Post has learned.

Some 135 corporate Amazon employees who worked at 1140 Broadway received pink slips in January, according to a state Department of Labor filing this week.

Another 165 Amazon workers in New York were axed, with the government records expected to hit the system within the coming weeks, a source familiar with the filings told The Post.

Amazon laid off 135 employees who worked at 1440 Broadway. Google Maps

They’re all part of 16,000 layoffs announced last month. In October, the e-commerce giant slashed another 14,000 corporate jobs — part of a restructuring plan stemming from investments in artificial intelligence and what experts described as over-hiring during the COVID pandemic.

The company’s CEO Andy Jassy has slashed nearly 10% of Amazon’s workforce in a three-month span.

Last year, he said new tech could create new job opportunities – though he also admitted it could bring “efficiency gains” by helping to reduce the overall workforce.

“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,” Jassy wrote in a memo in June.

“In the next few years, we expect that [AI] will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company,” he added.

Amazon did not announce the locations it targeted for layoffs, so the government filings are the only indication of where the losses took place.

The company declined to comment on the Department of Labor filings.

Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy, has said that Amazon “will need fewer people” as it rolls out artificial intelligence. Getty Images for Amazon Web Services

“We’ve been working to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy,” senior vice president of people Beth Galetti wrote in a January blog post.

New York took a big hit last year with nearly 1,000 job losses at nine Amazon locations in the city.

The latest cuts are smaller and likely focused on tech roles, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives told The Post.

“Amazon has tried to establish a strong presence as part of the New York tech community and this layoff is a dent in those plans,” he said, adding that “many other NYC tech players will likely aggressively focus on this opportunity to add great tech talent.”

Thousands of smoke detector fire alarms sold exclusively on Amazon are being recalled over a sound issue that could pose a fire hazard.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said in a notice that 11,000 LShome Photoelectric 3-Pack Smoke Detector Fire Alarms may fail to activate promptly if the sensing threshold of security warnings is set too high.

The alarms are white and circular, and have a light sound warning and test button.

They are operated by 9-volt batteries.

The products were sold on Amazon from February 2024 through December 2025 and cost about $30, the CPSC said.

The affected model number is XG-7D04-KZ9Z and the SKU number is CX-50YP-A5VN. Both are printed on the bottom side of the alarm.

Consumers should immediately stop using the product and can discard the smoke alarms in the trash, the agency said in the notice.

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more.

Amazon’s Best Books of the Year

In a year without a novel like James owning headlines and bestseller lists, the field has been wide open for end-of-year lists. At the top of Amazon’s newly revealed Best Books of 2025 list is Patrick Ryan’s Buckeye, which was also the September selection for both Read With Jenna and Barnes & Noble’s book club. Other highlights among Amazon’s top 20 include Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy, which was Amazon’s #1 pick in the mid-year checkin, The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai, Cursed Daughters by Oyinkan Braithwaite, Baldwin: A Love Story by Nicholas Boggs, and King of Ashes by S.A. Cosby. Both of this summer’s blockbusters, Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and Katabasis by R.F. Kuang also made the top 20. See the full list and Amazon editors’ selections in nonfiction, mystery/thriller, and many more genres.

Curioser and Curiouser!

Sabrina Carpenter is set to star in an adaptation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to be produced by Universal Pictures. Carpenter reportedly approached Universal with the idea last year. Lewis Carroll’s story is a lot more out-there than most folks remember, and an adaptation with a pop star in the lead could go a lot of ways. Will it be sanitized and family friendly, an attempt to pick up where Wicked leaves off, or will Carpenter lean into the chaotic nonsense? One clue: Lorene Scafaria, who wrote the movie Hustlers and directed several episodes of Succession and the recent pilot of I Love L.A., currently airing on HBO, has signed on to write and direct. Ms. Scafaria, if you’re reading this, please make it weird.

Amazon MGM Picks Up Rebecca Yarros Romance Novel for Adaptation

Before she became the reigning queen of romantasy, Rebecca Yarros wrote good old-fashioned romance novels. The Last Letter, originally published in 2019, was reissued earlier this year and has just been picked up for adaptation after an “intense, high-value bidding war.” Amazon MGM won the rights with an offer “in the $200,000 range and a potential $2 million purchase price and hefty backends,” which The Hollywood Report‘s Borys Kit notes is “an impressive deal for something that is intended to be a mid-budget adult drama.” Smart money says we’ll see this adaptation well before Amazon’s TV adaptation of Fourth Wing sees the light of day, if it ever does.

Dark Academia Horror for the Girlies

I’ve had my eye on Olivie Blake’s Girl Dinner for a while now, but I’ve been hesitant because my experiences with other BookTok faves—yes, I’ve read It Ends With Us and Fourth Wing—has been, let’s just say, not great. A thoughtful recommendation like this from a smart person whose taste I trust is exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

The team will be based in Lab126, the stealthy Silicon Valley-based research and development unit behind the Kindle e-reader, Echo smart speaker and other popular Amazon devices.

A growing number of companies are building AI agents as they look beyond text and image generators. In contrast to AI services such as chatbots, agents are capable of completing multistep, complex actions on a user’s behalf.

The new group will help develop an agentic AI “framework” for use in its robotics operations, an application often referred to as “physical AI.”

These systems enable robots to “hear, understand and act on natural language commands,” Amazon said.

Amazon’s AI lab released a web browser-based agent earlier this year. Its cloud unit has also formed its own agentic AI group. Amazon’s Alexa+, an AI-infused update of its voice assistant released in March, is also expected to have some agentic capabilities.

A Zoox autonomous robotaxi in San Francisco, California, US, on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024.

David Paul Morris | Bloomberg | Getty Images

Amazon‘s Zoox robotaxi unit issued a voluntary recall of its software for the second time in a month following a recent crash in San Francisco.

On May 8, an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi was turning at low speed when it was struck by an electric scooter rider after braking to yield at an intersection. The person on the scooter declined medical attention after sustaining minor injuries as a result of the collision, Zoox said.

“The Zoox vehicle was stopped at the time of contact,” the company said in a blog post. “The e-scooterist fell to the ground directly next to the vehicle. The robotaxi then began to move and stopped after completing the turn, but did not make further contact with the e-scooterist.”

Zoox said it submitted a voluntary software recall report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Thursday.

A Zoox spokesperson said the notice should be published on the NHTSA website early next week. The recall affected 270 vehicles, the spokesperson said.

The NHTSA said in a statement it had received the recall notice and that the agency “advises road users to be cautious in the vicinity of vehicles because drivers may incorrectly predict the travel path of a cyclist or scooter rider or come to an unexpected stop.”

If an autonomous vehicle continues to move after contact with any nearby vulnerable road user, it risks causing harm or further harm. In the AV industry, General Motors-backed Cruise exited the robotaxi business after a collision in which one of its vehicles injured a pedestrian who had been struck by a human-driven car and was then rolled over by the Cruise AV.

Zoox’s May incident comes roughly two weeks after the company announced a separate voluntary software recall following a recent Las Vegas crash. In that incident, an unoccupied Zoox robotaxi collided with a passenger vehicle, resulting in minor damage to both vehicles.

The company issued a software recall for 270 of its robotaxis in order to address a defect with its automated driving system that could cause it to inaccurately predict the movement of another car, increasing the “risk of a crash.”

Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020 for more than $1 billion, announcing at the time that the deal would help bring the self-driving technology company’s “vision for autonomous ride-hailing to reality.”

While Zoox is in a testing and development stage with its AVs on public roads in the U.S., Alphabet’s Waymo is already operating commercial, driverless ride-hailing services in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas, and is ramping up in Atlanta.

Tesla is promising it will launch its long-delayed robotaxis in Austin next month, and, if all goes well, plans to expand after that to San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Antonio, Texas.

As much as Amazon may have wanted to dodge the spotlight in President Trump’s trade war, there was no avoiding it for America’s largest online retailer.

First, the e-commerce company was entangled in the fleeting spat Tuesday with the White House over a faulty report that Amazon was going to show shoppers the costs of tariffs.

Two days later, the economic reality arrived when Amazon reported among the slowest growth ever in its North American retail business.

The region, Amazon’s largest, contributed to first-quarter financial results that showed the slowest overall sales growth since the depths of the pandemic, the company reported Thursday. Sales from January through March rose to $155.7 billion, 9 percent more than the same period a year earlier. Profit was $17.1 billion, up 64 percent.

For the current quarter, which ends in June, Amazon told investors to expect sales of $159 billion to $164 billion, and for operating profits to shrink to as low as $13 billion. Amazon added “tariff and trade policies” to the list of factors it says can make its forecasts uncertain.

The results were mixed compared with Wall Street’s expectations. Amazon’s stock price was down more than 3 percent in aftermarket trading following the earnings release.

“Obviously, none of us know exactly where tariffs will settle or when,” Andy Jassy, the chief executive of Amazon, said on a call with investors. He said the company is “pretty maniacally focused” on keeping prices down, by purchasing extra inventory in advance of tariffs and will be helping sellers on Amazon’s marketplace do the same.

Investors have been trying to untangle how President Trump’s on-again-off-again tariffs would affect Amazon customers. Some speculated that consumers may have accelerated purchases in March and April ahead of more tariffs kicking in, boosting spending in an otherwise uncertain environment.

Mr. Jassy said Amazon customers have done some “heightened buying” of certain types of products, although he did not specify which ones.

Many different components drive revenue in Amazon’s retail business. The online sales of products it offers directly to customers grew 5 percent to $57.4 billion, and the services it provides to sellers who list products on its site grew 6 percent to $36.5 billion.

Advertising, which investors view as a promising and profitable business, grew 18 percent to $13.9 billion.

Investors have long focused on Amazon’s cloud computing business, which generates most of the company’s profit. Mr. Jassy, who ran the cloud business before his promotion to chief executive, has been building up the company’s artificial intelligence offerings. The cloud business grew 17 percent, to $29.3 billion, in the first quarter.

Mr. Jassy said Amazon could have sold more cloud services if it had more capacity at its data centers, the remote buildings filled with computers that power the modern internet and A.I. He added that he expects the constraints to ease in the coming months. The company has been racing to build more infrastructure, and the release on Thursday showed Amazon spent more than $24 billion on capital expenses in the first three months of the year, about $2 billion less than the previous quarter. In February, Amazon said it was planning to spend about $100 billion on capital expenditures in 2025.

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more.

Amazon’s 10 Books That Defined 2024

Amazon editors made the impossible selection of just 10 books that defined this year. There were three books I was 99% sure would make the list: James by Percival Everett, Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar, and All Fours by Miranda July. If you’ve kept up with even a few best of and big literary awards list, you too would have made this guess because these books were on all the lists, including this one. I loved The God of the Woods by Liz Moore, which became the big book club book of the year, so I was glad to see it make the list along with my other faves, James and Martyr!. I was most surprised by the inclusion of Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I mean, I know the adaptation has received huge buzz and fandom but I hadn’t caught wind of readers picking up the 20-year-old book (which I read, and was weirded out by, and enjoyed the year it was published) because of the film.

THE GUARDIAN’S Most Anticipated Books of 2025

The looking ahead has officially begun! The Guardian released a month-by-month guide to the best books 2025 has to offer. If you’re riding that romantasy train, you’ll almost certainly be on the lookout for Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros, the third book in the Empyrean series; I expect We Do Not Part by Han Kang, translated by e. yaewon and Paige Aniyah Morris, to do very well; and I’ll be picking up Xiaolu Guo’s newest, Call Me Ishmaelle—Twenty Fragments of a Ravenous Youth made a big impact on 20-something-year-old me. Everyone you know will be reading The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong, Katabasis by RF Kuang, and Dead and Alive by Zadie Smith. There’s a whole lot to dive into here, so I’ll leave you to the frantic task of setting reminders to preorder, put on hold, what have you.

The Design Trend That Took Publishing By Storm

Here at the end of the year, it’s worth looking back at the book trend of all book trends in 2024. I well remember the impact pretty, deluxe editions of books had in the earlier days of bookish social media, but sprayed, stained, stenciled, whatever edges had us in a headlock this year. Moreover, the deluxe editions I typically saw decorating aspirational shelves were classics, but publisher Entangled really did change the game by splurging on fancy adornments for newly released novels in the genre that also took us by storm: romantasy. You can read about how the trend took off across publishing and ignited a keeping-up-with-the-Joneses design atmosphere, how ubiquitous these editions became on BookTok in particular, and so much more about the trend’s impact across publishing, culture, and even printing. I am so curious about the (pun intended) shelf life of this trend.

The Best Queer Books of 2024, According to All the Lists

Danika Ellis did the good work by compiling the queer books mentioned on the most Best Books of 2024 lists. Check out the graphic novels, literary fiction, romance, fantasy, and so much more that got featured on the biggest lists. Surprise, surprise, Martyr! and All Fours made the cut.
